Olay retinol

I’m mid 30’s and have unfortunately quite deep forehead lines. I’ve been making an effort to get more consistent with skincare and have been using olay retinol for a few months now. It’s made a bit of difference overall and I’m wondering if a stronger retinol would do even more. However I’ve no idea how strong this one is as it doesn’t say anywhere! Has anyone switched to/from this and another retinol product and could give me some idea? Anyone recommend a retional product?

I'm using the Olay Retinol night cream and am wondering whether to go the "whole hog" and if so how, too.

Ohbotherpiglet · 30/12/2021 10:51

@Nevertime - yes exactly! I’ve seen olay do a “retinol max” which promises more retinol than the product we are using but it’s twice the price and i wonder if there’s something better.

I'm interested in this one too

I would switch to a serum or treatment. Start at 0.2% (I think that’s the weakest) and work your way up in strength gradually. I think generally these retinol creams sold have the smallest possible amount of retinol in them just so that they can be marketed as such.

Ohbotherpiglet · 30/12/2021 17:47

@Wavypurple do you have any brand recommendations?

Not used it but The ordinary has a whole range of them and very cheap.

Wavypurple · 30/12/2021 18:58

Agree with pp I use the ordinary, it’s not very expensive at all but I’ve seen a visible difference using it

Beauty Pie do some great retinol serums and moisturisers.

Another vote for The Ordinary. I use the 1% one, not every day, maybe 3 times a week? And have noticed a difference.

I have a deep and passionate attachment to my Sunday Riley A+ retinoid serum. It’s not cheap but my god, it works. I’m on my second bottle and have also got the matching eye cream, which is fab too.

Try a Dermatica prescription - they are much stronger than over the counter.

For over the counter Medik8 Crystal Retinol is well-loved.

I personally wouldn’t bother with high street if your lines are already quite deep, it would probably make a difference but not substantial so over time it’d be more money than investing in a premium product (if that makes sense!).

The no7 rep told me that the no7 retinol product has the highest % that they sell in store, so it’s likely the olay is lower than that (and the no7 isn’t particularly high).

Personally I like Paula’s choice 1% - it’s strong mind so you can’t jump in every day with it. Start 2x a week and work up or mix with a barrier cream.

Paula’s choice also does other lower % products - and they do a good explanation of the strengths and purposes on the website

Ohbotherpiglet · 01/01/2022 09:18

@Ohpulltheotherone I’m not sure I’d trust what the no7 rep said about a rival product!

But it’s useful information because I still had a reaction the retinol when I first started using the olay stuff so it’s a warning to assume I still need to be careful with the lower percentage products.

The ordinary products seem cheaper than the rest by a country mile! May give it a go as it’s not a huge investment if it doesn’t work. For those who use it, do you use a night moisturiser with it or just the serum?

Some people don't need a moisturiser but my skin feels very tight after Retinol so I use a ceramide packed serum then a rich moisturiser and a bit of oil but that's very personal.
