Red Hair? Show me yours!!

My hair at the moment is just a light/medium brown (coloured -semi permanent). The roots are slightly lighter, some of the lengths are darker.

I’ve been pondering of going more red. I did & have always like ashy brown colours, but lately have been leaning towards red colours. I don’t think I’d carry off bright red, so maybe something like burgundy, dark red. I don’t want hot roots, where the roots end up lighter than the ends, so I don’t know how I’d do that? I’d still want some brown tones maybe. I’ve put a couple of pics of the colours I like.

Can you show me your reds - all tones so I’ve got some inspo?

I like the idea of darker roots, going redder down the lengths & ends?

This is mine currently. Absolutely love it. I'm naturally quite dark haired which makes me look really washed out unfortunately, but this I love

Oooh, I don't mind showing mine because I name change a lot, I miss my red hair and I've been thinking of going back to it, I have none from behind though!

Justoneday…. Look at that shine! Lovely!

MyComputerGets…. That’s a lovely shade of red & it really suits you!

I think that’s what is making me a tad reluctant- will it suit me? I was naturally auburn when younger, so fair skin, freckles. I can have dark hair but have been blonde which doesn’t suit. I’m ok with brown, just a bit boring on me & have been copper/auburn but people have said I suit darker brown better!

Are your reds box dye or salon?

If you was auburn it probably will suit lovely, but one thing I notice is- red looks great on most skin tones!
I've always used this one to be honest OP, it needed doing too often to justify a hairdressers trip each time!

As a natural redhead, I would disagree red looks good on most skintones.

SocksAndTheCity · 08/12/2021 13:49

Here is mine - it's naturally a sandy/light reddish colour anyway, but it has a bright copper rinse plus a growing-out home balayage that I did with an esalon kit 😊

This was my colour for a few years. I'm blonde now. One day I'll settle...

Mine is super bright, it's Lanza healing colour 5rr if I remember with 30 vol development

Wow, you all have such lovely hair. Looking at mine now, it looks so ‘meh’!

I don’t know what to do, whether to try a semi permanent box colour or to go to salon. If it goes tits up with a box dye, it’ll only be cost of the box dye & most likely another box dye to cover it, where as if I don’t like what the salon does, it’s the cost of that, which will be £££ & a box dye over it. But then if I go armed with pics of exactly what I want, they aren’t really going to wrong are they?!

I change my hair quite often, and if I used box dyes then I wouldn't be able to. The only reason my colour changes so well (I went from the colour above to ashy white blonde in two appointments) is because there are no traces of box dyes on there.

I also think red is different to browns etc and that you benefit from more tones rather than a blanket colour, which a hairdresser can mix and place better.

dontgobaconmyheart · 09/12/2021 12:03

I think it's a tricky one OP, I love natural looking red tones but red is very hard to maintain. A photo of it freshly done won't reflect the vibrancy or colour intensity a couple of weeks later, it is notoriously hard to keep on top of.

I also don't agree it suits most people, quite the opposite. Exactly the right tone for the right skin tone can look amazing but a box dye won't yield that or be multidimensional.

Red often brings out any redness in skin tones so I think doesn't always do favours to those with a pink undertone on paler skin. If it's something you really want I would book a consultation with a good hairdresser to discuss what might suit you and how to achieve it, find out about the upkeep etc.

I don’t care for red hair.

WingBingo · 09/12/2021 20:04

I had this a red / brown mix I had a couple of months ago. Some of the red has faded now but I loved at the time.

@NatMoz and @LadyJJ wow! I want red now!

Swirlywoo · 09/12/2021 20:36

It might just be me... but the pics you have posted look like brown hair OP. If you are naturally auburn, I'd go more coppery. Maybe a bayalage? Just my view!

daisyjgrey · 11/12/2021 16:05

@Cam22

I don’t care for red hair.

This has made me laugh a lot. What a fantastically redundant comment 😂

ReginaaPhalange · 11/12/2021 16:10

I love my red hair!! Yes it's a nightmare to maintain but i feel so much more confident with it!

I went bright red last time I went to the hairdressers. I loved it but it didn't really suit me. It looked like a murder scene in the shower and faded within weeks. I've since gone very dark brown to neutralise the red.
