Has anyone else’s taste in perfume changed dramatically?

Up to my mid 5Os I only wore spicy, woody scents (oud, tobacco and leathery notes were my favourites) and really hated anything sweet and feminine smelling. Since then I’ve found anything I used to love cloying and heavy and wear more fruity, florals - currently Jo Malone Poppy and Barley, Wild Bluebell, Peony and suede blush. If I could afford it I’d love Baccarat Rouge and I’ve tried every dupe going to try find one that is a good substitute. Has anyone else had a radical change in their taste? Is it a common thing to go from one type of scent to another and really dislike the one you used to like. I always thought younger people liked sweet scents more but when I was younger I couldn’t bare them.

Yes, me too!
I'm late 40s and find so many perfumes are too 'heavy' on me, I can now only wear very light perfumes. I currently have a few from Philosophy which I can tolerate.

DH bought me a bottle of Dune which I always used to wear when I was younger. I sprayed it and it smelled so different to how I remember - not in a good way. Haven't used it since.

Presume it's something to do with perimenopause?

Hodl. My guess was hormones too. My taste in just about everything else is pretty much the same but when it comes to perfume I like the polar opposite of what I loved up to my 50s.

I think a lot of perfumes have been reformulated. I used to love Beautiful by EL but it's completely different. As is Rive Gauche.

Yes, I think it happened about the time I was pregnant with DS and it’s never gone back... Plus, it’s not just liking or disliking the scent from the bottle, but the scent sitting differently on my skin now! Still haven’t found one I’m happy with, and I sold all my previously-loved perfumes.

Re:BR40, did you try the Zara dupe?

Notatwite · 08/12/2021 14:23

evtheria yes that’s the thing too. It’s more than just not liking a scent but of it not suiting me any more. I did try the zara dupe but it didn’t smell anywhere near as good on me as the real thing annoyingly. I ended up re-selling it on eBay after the first spray.

It’s not as much as my taste in perfume has changed, but rather that perfume ma have changed enormously.

I smell some old favourites in the shops and they are nothing like they used to be.

Deathraystare · 08/12/2021 16:05

Nope. Still loathe all those sweet "I may be a grown woman but I am pretending to be a five year old" perfumes that are all around us.

Anyway, it is not me that has changed but a lot of the classics have been got at. Cheapened and/or sweetened for the "Pink Cotton Candy mob". UGH!

Deathraystare. I seem to have changed into a pink cotton candy offender after a lifetime of loathing sweet scents
