Received navy instead of black sandals, help me decide...

I ordered a pair of Timberland sandals (not in the UK so it is sandals weather here), from a retailer which I think is something like your TK Maxx, they sell end of range, older stock and reduced items.

I fell in love with these sandals as they are just what I need style wise, with the back strap and a bit of support, and leather. I need black sandals as have something similar (but not nearly as nice) in a tan colour.

The description is Black Iris, and on the site description they say they are black

here

but when I received them, they are navy blue.

Now I don't know whether to keep them, as I have never owned a pair of navy blue shoes. I only wear tan or black. There are no other options colour wise, so either I keep them or return them, and keep looking for the perfect sandal.

I did intend on buying them to wear with black skinnys (yes I still wear them) so even if I do keep them, I still need to find something else black. Which is not an easy feat (hur hur) here. I am a bit fussy shoe wise, they have to be comfy or I know I won't wear them. These fit like a dream.

So, how silly with these look with black jeans? And if anyone else has blue sandals, how do you wear them? All I can think is normal light or dark blue jeans with a neutral top, or one with a blue in it.

I am 51 (if that matters) I don't wear shorter style anything, I mainly wear jeans, and if dresses, the longer maxi type style. Just for an idea of the style of clothes I wear.

I hope that link works, as it is a sign up site.

Oh and I didn't convert the price so you have a price idea, I paid about 50GBP for these, so they aren't the most pricy, but also not cheap enough to just sit around.

Navy would be nicer than black for sandals. You do have the black jeans issue, but other than that I’d wear them with absolutely anything. Treat them as a neutral like you do with blue jeans.

chatw0o0 · 07/12/2021 07:47

I really like navy as a softer version of black (if that makes sense!). I would wear them with whatever I'd wear black (or tan) with - ie, jeans, shorts etc.

Talipesmum · 07/12/2021 07:49

I think they’d be fine with black jeans. What do they look like on? They’re pretty dark anyway. You could perhaps darken them a bit more with darker polish if you wanted - though not sure that would work if the sole leather is the same colour.

Comfy shoes that fit well are the greatest. Don’t let them go!

Straussful · 07/12/2021 07:49

They're lovely. I would wear navy sandals with (any) blue jeans or any dress but I probably wouldn't wear navy shoes with black jeans. But, that doesn't mean you shouldn't! Could you dye them? I've dyed boots that came in the wrong colour. And shoes for work when a bottle of leather dye was cheaper than a new pair. Tape off any non navy parts before you dye as it is paint-on for shoes which can be messy.

FindingMeno · 07/12/2021 07:51

I think if I loved them, I'd dye them if I couldn't return them for the black.
For me, if I had the seed in my mind that I couldn't wear them in the way I expected ( whether rightly or wrongly) I would probably subconsciously avoid them or not feel great when I wore them.

isthismylifenow · 07/12/2021 08:10

They do look really nice on. If they didn't fit as perfectly as they do, I would return them without a 2nd thought.

I don't know if I could get away with dyeing them, as the foot bed is the same blue leather, so I am sure that would rub away with wear.

This is my conundrum, but then also

For me, if I had the seed in my mind that I couldn't wear them in the way I expected ( whether rightly or wrongly) I would probably subconsciously avoid them or not feel great when I wore them

I think I might be overthinking this so badly, but in my mind it hasn't helped my what to wear with the black skinnies dilemma.

(I saw the same pair in a rose gold colour, but not available here sadly. Those I would have snapped up as well).

I have a pair of dark navy sandals that I wore all summer with black jeans and I really like it as a look actually!

isthismylifenow · 07/12/2021 08:12

If nothing else, I have now learned that Black Iris colour, is not black!

What is wrong with Navy Blue as a colour name... Confused

I’d dye them. I’ve dyed lots of shoes over the years. It works really well.

Ok, so I haven't actually tried on the two together yet.... Just in my head it isn't going to work.

What colour top would you wear? Would you go for a top with blue in it to tie in the colour?

Why don't you try them on with the outfits you'd usually want to wear sandals with? If you're still not convinced and they don't co-ordinate as you'd like, send them back. I quite often try on a number of outfits with new shoes, to judge how versatile they'll be.

On another note, I didn't realise blue shoes with black trousers was frowned upon! Learn something new every day Grin

Gearedtoyou · 07/12/2021 08:53

I like those and also think navy is much more versatile than black for sandals.

You can wear the than ones with black jeans Smile

Going by this thread, I am not sure it is. Grin But it might be an age related thing from my side. My mother always said to never wear red with green either, and I wouldn't, but some do and make it work.

Along the same lines..... the colour of a mans belt is to always match his shoes.

I haven't made a decision on what to do with the shoes though. I did contact them and they asked for pictures of said shoes, so that they can 'have a chat with the warehouse staff'. I think I am not alone in assuming Iris Black is anything other than black.

Keep them they are lovely

tintodeverano2 · 07/12/2021 13:10

See on the photo the footbed looks blue but the top looks black...
However I really like them. I would be tempted to have them dyed black if that's what you wanted.

isthismylifenow · 07/12/2021 13:15

Thank you everyone. I am going to keep them.

They did contact me back, with apologies as they went to check all the remaining pairs. They will be changing the description on their site as they are definitely all blue.

I am not convinced about them with the black jeans, but I can make up some new (and for me, a bit more adventurous) outfits. Smile

Now, if this rain would just stop.....................

This is what I noticed today Tinto.

When I bought them, to me they did look black on the photos. I think because it said they were black, they were black in my mind.

Now I have seen the shoes irl, the more I look at the pictures, they do look more blue than the first time I looked at them.

When they change the description, I think they will be an obvious blue Smile. It did make me think how the description actually does affect what we see............
