So I've been reading the winter coat threads with interest.
I usually buy a coat based on it being a sale rather than its usefulness and then wear them forever until the cycle starts again. I have decided to chose a coat on purpose and have whittled it down to two North Face ones. I looked at Didrickson's but thought they'd be too long and big (I'm a size 18 so don't need the help).
The Arctic Parka (I like the knitted cuffs but the fluff on the hood is really big and I'm not sure about the shape)

The Zanek Parka (The hood fluff is better and I think the shape is more flattering but there aren't any cuff bits and its synthetic insulation)

I know down is warmer but is it necessary on the day to day? I live in the north of England so it doesn't get super cold (nowt a warm hat won't sort anyway) and also are there ethical considerations for down? Will it be so warm that I can't wear it have the time?
Thought please. I'm really stuck. TIA
