What do you wear on your feet at home for a party?

Christmas party coming up, my turn to host. Planning to wear a lovely knee length dress, but not sure about shoes. I don't wear shoes in the house but slippers will not go with the dress.

Equally don't really want to be clopping around the house in heels Confused

What would you wear?

@SoftPillow - true.
My house doesn’t have a ballroom sadly so I doubt dinner guests were planning the waltz or tango when visiting us.

Bluntness100 · 06/12/2021 15:44

I always go bare foot. I don’t have a no shoe rule so guests can do as they please, but I’d never be in heels or proper shoes in my home. So I’m just barefoot.

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 06/12/2021 15:52

@SoftPillow

For dinner parties and proper parties always heals. And then later no shoes after a few drinks / dancing.

I'd also never expect party guests to take shoes off. Can't imagine being at a proper party in my socks, and taking heals off often completely changes the look of an outfit

Exactly this! While we don't wear shoes in my house on a normal everyday basis, I would definitely wear my shoes indoors for a party if I'm wearing a nice dress. Taking them off just completely ruins the look of the overall outfit. I wouldn't expect guests to take theirs off either. And while I do understand party hosts would like me to remove my shoes indoors, if I'm wearing a dress it really irritates me in having to do so. I just feel sloppy if I'm walking around in bare / stocking'd flat feet. Of course I do it. But I don't like it!

And for the person who mentioned walking in dog shit with the shoes - perhaps the men may do this, but I've never known a woman to be wearing party heels and accidentally find themselves traipsing through dog shit 😂

I bought some black patent ballerina's for at home dinner parties. (Cheap from Primark only wear for this)
Still casual but not in sheepskin booties.

If a full on dress up party though I'd wear shoes as they're part of the outfit and occasion.

Adults drinking wine in their socks spoils the vibe.

Remembering that my Mum used to wear feather mule slippers with a small heel for these situations in the 80's 😄

@TyrannosaurusRights

Embroidered loafers?
What are these? Sounds intriguing!
Coronado2 · 06/12/2021 16:19

I'd be wearing heels. But I like heels and we don't have any rules about shoes in our house.

AColdDuncanGoodhew · 06/12/2021 16:27

Slippers for me or just tights. I never wear shoes at home, even for parties Grin

Benjispruce5 · 06/12/2021 16:37

Heels!

Benjispruce5 · 06/12/2021 16:38

If everyone else is dressing up then I’ll match but tbh I don’t have those types of parties so I’d be barefoot normally!

honeylemonteaforme · 06/12/2021 16:44

We are a shoes off household (tho I don't expect this for guests) so I always feel super weird in shoes in mine or others houses esp heels.

I usually take a fluffy pair of socks to put over my tights at other peoples houses for dinner. Pretty sure they think it's strange...

JustLikea · 06/12/2021 16:45

Just socks 🧦 everyone wears socks so ridiculous Christmas socks with your fancy clothes

CointreauVersial · 06/12/2021 17:16

Ooh yes, this is a dilemma! Normally, I would say go barefoot, but it's cold right now. I agree you don't want a nice party dress ruined by a pair of slippers.

Maybe tights, or plain black socks? Or pretty flipflops? Or your usual party shoes (your house, your rules). Depends on the dress, really.

Go Japanese style and lose the shoes indoors. Provide nice little slippers for guests and get on with the mingling and enjoyment of the dinner. Make them dainty and unassuming. I kinda like it!

Personally i prefer a slipper in the shape of a yeti boot.

MargosKaftan · 06/12/2021 20:58

See, after a big covidy gap, we are back to parties in homes - I've one next week and I know they are a "shoes off" household so will be wearing trousers or jeans with a nice top rather than a dress because that way I can wear thick socks and avoid the dilemma.

I'm not hosting in the evening this year at any point this Christmas, only afternoon mulled wine and nibbles, so will go for jeans and nice jumper for that and add slippers. But now this thread has made me realise I need some spangly ballet pump /slippers. Its a gap in my wardrobe.

I have lovely sequinned Ugg boots which are my shoe of choice for any event in winter that involves standing or walking. They also have slippers.

What's your budget for sequinned slippers op

RockinHorseShit · 06/12/2021 23:00

My biggest, flashiest heels that I couldn't wear to walk in anymore. I'll probably be barefoot after a few drinks though
