Dyson or GHD Helios?

I know it’s been asked lots but has anyone tried both the Dyson hair dryer and the GHD Helios? Or has either one and absolutely loves it?

My hair takes an age to dry - every hairdresser comments on it. I have fine hair but loads of it rather than it being really thick. It’s also the type of hair that is very weather reactive - frizzes up and tangles with rain, wind, humidity. I would love to cut down drying time and to just be able to rough dry it sometimes and it look presentable rather than having to section it all and straighten.

I’m leaning towards the Dyson due to it not using as much heat but would love some opinions.

Like you, I also have loads of stupidly fine hair. Same with my daughters. I’m not a “hair” person. It’s not my crowning glory. Basically, I CBA. I do know that it’s so fine, it’s far too easy to utterly destroy it, and my job requires me to look well-groomed. (Like a show dog.) I travel, and I often have to be looking glam for a 3am start. (Gross). I put both of them through the ringer and they’re really good, but the Dyson did actually leave the GHD for dead. I didn’t hesitate to drop the cash. (Am considering upgrading to the pretty navy one and donating mine to my DD1 who is basically a mermaid, too.) My lovely hairdresser let me borrow both and I went for the Dyson. It shocked me because I genuinely didn’t think that was the choice I’d make. In Aus, the cost difference is more too. The Dyson is much lighter and when you hold it over your head, it really shows. I think it’s the weight in the handle making it more ergonomically practical. Also, it never pulls your hair into it. If you straighten your hair, I would invest in the new attachment that smoothes down flyaways. (There may even be some kind of Christmas bundle that includes it.) It has fewer actual working parts than a “regular” hairdryer, which actually means that unless you drop it, it’s less likely to break. It’s a doddle to clean.
Here’s a link to the flyaway doohickey. Nadine Baggot raves about it too.

I agree with @Justilou1, the Dyson beats the GHD dryer hands down. It's lighter, quieter and seems to dry my hair faster.

The opposite is true for straighteners though, GHD easily beat Dyson!

Op, not sure whether the above posters are talking about the standard ghd.
I have the helios and it easily compares with the dyson. The older ghd didn’t. HTH.

DarkDarkNight · 06/12/2021 18:01

It is the Navy one I have my eye on Justilou1 the bundle I am looking at includes the new attachment.

Good to hear it dries quickly PinkSparklyPussyCat drying my hair is the bane of my life.

Good to hear the Helios is comparable WowIlikereallyhateyou I really rate GHD. I loved my GHD straighteners, I went to a cloud 9 when my GHDs dies but will definitely get GHD next time.

Mine was definitely the Helios and compared to the Dyson I didn't like it at all. It felt heavy and awkward in comparison and was extremely noisy. I sent it back for a refund after using it once.

DarkDarkNight · 06/12/2021 19:56

I’ve ordered the Dyson from QVC so I can send it back if I don’t get on with it (I’ve read a few reviews where people said it left their hair frizzy or flat). I’m hoping it’s amazing though.

I hated the dyson and always have a moan about it on these threads because I'm not over wasting so much money Grin.

I have the similar fine hair but lots of it going on, and it's long. For me it didnt dry any quicker than my existing dryer at the time (a babyliss 3q), left my hair looking flat but mostly left it so tangled, every time. Trying to brush it out constantly negated any alleged benefit of less heat damage for me, and wasn't time saving.

To its credit it is attractive, and I loved how quiet it was but otherwise it lives rent free in my mind as a huge regret. I never spend that much on anything and was so deflated. Have asked for a Parlux dryer for xmas so hopefully that delivers.

HeatingOnHeatingOff · 07/12/2021 10:31

I have the dyson hair dryer and their straigheners.

I do really like both of them. I have bought dd the dyson hair dryer too for xmas.

Its light, not too noisy and claims to have much less damage on hair than other hair dryers.

The straighteners are not heavy duty ones so would only suit hair that is easy to style

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 07/12/2021 11:05

That's interesting @HeatingOnHeatingOff, people raved about the Dyson straighteners, saying you only have to go over each section once and generally how brilliant they are. I really struggled to straighten my hair with them, presumably because I have naturally curly hair that has a very strong curl and ringlets in places.

Justilou1 · 08/12/2021 01:01

@DarkDarkNight - I do have to admit that it wasn’t love at first sight with mine. I had to learn how to use the nozzle attachments properly. They are what makes the difference. Now I know, I couldn’t go back ever.

DarkDarkNight · 08/12/2021 22:42

Just to report back I received the Dyson today so have given it a quick whirl. I didn’t do a full blow dry but sectioned it and dried it without an attachment and with the gentle air attachment.

It did dry my hair quickly compared to my old dryer, and it has dried frizz free, but I am used to a lot of heat from a dryer so it felt a bit odd (obviously the lower heat will be better for the hair).

I left it a long time before drying tonight so will give it a go and see how it handles drying it from a bit wetter as well.

I use the dryer attachment on my Dyson air wrap. Hate the noise, heat and blowiness of other dryers now. Also leaves my hair smoother and does it more quickly.
