Black knit dress with what?

I’ve got a nice black knit dress (smart casual I suppose) but don’t know what to wear it with to make it look less funereal.
For eg daytime meal out/ country pub/ Christmas market.
I have black boots and can’t afford to replace those. Also some burgundy shoes.

White trainers? I also recently bought one, I like it with nude shoes for work, I don’t think it works so much with boots, too much black. If I was wearing it to a pub I’d wear white trainers and bare legs.

Tan leather belt could work for me. White trainers wouldn’t though. And I don’t have any!

I wore this yesterday! Though mine was an oversized jumper dress. Wore it with a black belt with green buckle and black ankle boots. Paired it with a pink bag with gold chain to match the belt.

Just make sure you have a few pops of colour and you'll be alright.

What about some sort of gilet over the top - I don’t mean like an outdoorsy layer, I mean maybe faux fur or shearling, or quilted/fleece, something that’s on trend at the moment?

I wear mine with tan leather long boots and a marant style tan leather belt
