Embarrassing make up issue (pic included)

Goshitstricky · 04/12/2021 18:45

I am in my 30's and don't know how to fix this, I'm really embarrassed so please be kind, what makes it worse is I'm a qualified (although not practicing anymore) makeup artist. I can make other people skin look flawless, and my eye make up is fire I promise! Wink

I can't stop this happening to any make up I apply to my nose. I use a cleanser, moisturiser then leave it to absorb and dry. Then a mixed pigment primer (I have very red skin on my nose/cheeks from lupus) then any foundation I use ends up like the picture, only happens on my nose. Am I doing something really wrong? I'd love to be able to wear make up now and again (masks are really helping with this issue at the moment)

If it helps, my skin is dry everywhere apart the t-zone which is always red and oily.

Can someone talk me through how to fix it.
I have looked at tutorials on YouTube etc but it's not application of the makeup I'm struggling with. It's my skin!

This could be my nose!!! It’s so fucking annoying and the masks just make it worse.

I think the key must be a certain primer but I’m yet to find the one!

NC6789012 · 04/12/2021 18:52

I find using a sticky vit c serum better than primer. Also if i use a brush this happens but not with a beauty blender?

belimoo · 04/12/2021 18:55

I'm struggling to see what's going on from that photo. Is it the make up clumping or do you have uneven/flaky skin on your nose?

I get this with flaky bits of skin because my skin is very dry. If my skin isn't exfoliated properly then there's nothing I can do to prevent this and I just avoid foundation. I moisturise, let it sink in and then just lightly dust bronzer over my skin.

Goshitstricky · 04/12/2021 19:04

@belimoo - it's not dry, it's oily, it goes clumpy and really patchy, ends up,showing the redness of the skin underneath. I have huge pores that show through too.

I’ve got got large pores on my nose that you can see after I’ve put foundation on. I’ve fount using a brush to ‘push the foundation in to the pores’ makes it less noticeable and blend in more.

Hope the fuck that makes sense 😂🤩

Itsalmostanaccessory · 04/12/2021 19:11

This is what my skin was like. Not looked like that since a few weeks after I started using azelaic acid. If I cant get that, I use a glycolic acid toner. Only in the mornings.
At night a use a vitamin C serum and also use a peptide serum. I'd actually need to go look at the names to write to full regimen I use as I cant remember them unless I'm reading them!

You need to find the right regimen for your skin. As a starting point, you can go to The Ordinary site and email them with your issue and theyll email you a tailored product regimen. You dont need to buy their stuff but it gives you a starting point.

What’s your skin care routine like?

Can you use a different primer? Benefit do a good one!

Christmas1988 · 04/12/2021 19:14

Put some smashbox pore minimiser on and it’ll be grand, it’s my go to product if somethings going not quite right.

Burnamer · 04/12/2021 19:16

Have you tried cosmetic blotting paper/ papier poudre or some such spelling. The Mac one is expensive but fantastic. Blot every time you go to the loo - I found it really helps.

Goshitstricky · 04/12/2021 19:24

I haven't used blotting paper but I will give it a go. My bedroom is a wealth of products I've tried but they haven't worked so one more won't hurt.

I will look into Smashbox

My skincare routine is literally cleanse and moisturise morning (with spf) and evening. My primer is the 'porless' Hmm Elf one. I have tried a few. I'll have a look at some more. Apparently serums are a good shout. Anyone have any recommendations?

Weleda skin food is a good cream. Specifically for dry skin. Maybe try that. The reviews are amazing.

Then milk makeup do a good primer, it’s like glue but it does great things, it might help.

NotMyCat · 04/12/2021 19:34

Agree with the milk primer BUT the elf mint one is a great dupe so give that a go as it's cheap! It basically glues it to your nose

LibbyL92 · 04/12/2021 19:34

Also Kat von D does good make up for covering tattoos ect, maybe pop to a counter snd see if there’s anything thick enough to cover xx

I have a scar on my cleavage that I use her concealer to cover it’s very red and raised. Deffo helps with the appearance xx

CarrotSticks19 · 04/12/2021 19:36

I had this problem with the elf poreless primer OP, I changed to number 7 anti redness primer and it went away. Id try a different primer

Now using an estee lauder one and I never get the issue so I think it's your primer

CarrotSticks19 · 04/12/2021 19:38

I also use the face theory porebright serum which has really improved my redness and dryness.

EmmaWoodhousestreehouse · 04/12/2021 19:39

Try the Trinny products. They are dewy rather than powdery. Lovely products.

SmolCat · 04/12/2021 19:41

I used to get this (and also often get red nose). I switched to not using primer and it helped massively even though it felt counter productive at the time. I also find it’s a lot better if I use a beauty blender and dab foundation on. I can’t wipe it on with fingers or a brush or it’ll end up like the picture. I stopped using any kind of powder over the top too. Basically; dab on foundation and leave it alone.

Yogaandcocoa · 04/12/2021 19:41

Does exfoliating help?

I have a similar issue abs can't wear liquid foundation because of it

I find minerals / powder fine maybe because you can place it on top of the skin without having to work it in

Yogaandcocoa · 04/12/2021 19:42

Or try a beauty blender sponge do you are placing / bouncing the foundation on top of your skin

GertrudeBElion · 04/12/2021 19:47

It's not dry, but it's dehydrated. Your skin is drawing in the moisture and leaving the 'solids' on the surface.

MoltonSilver · 04/12/2021 19:47

Your moisturizer and foundation don't mix. Possibly one is oil based and one is water based. Try a different moisturizer.

ExplodingCarrots · 04/12/2021 19:48

Are you using a brush to apply ? Because this happens to my nose if I use a brush. If I use a blending sponge I get a flawless nose.
I also went down the road of using pore filling primers and I found it made the texture on my nose worse . I now use much more moisturising primers . Charlotte tilbury flawless filter is lovely but my go to cheaper primer is the elf luminous putty primer . I can also recommend The Ordinary high spreadability fluid primer .

VanCleefArpels · 04/12/2021 19:52

Niacinimide helps reduce pores

Try a CC cream instead of foundation, it’s lighter and for me doesn’t accentuate pores so much

HyacynthBucket · 04/12/2021 19:57

This is just a suggestion OP. But could the problem be rosacea? I had what I think was that on my nose, which also seemed to be getting bigger and sometimes felt a bit throbby and hot. Doctor was no use at all, but I see a homeopath and when I mentioned it to him, he ordered some homeopathic rosacea cream, which has done the trick!
