Embarrassing make up issue (pic included)

Goshitstricky · 04/12/2021 18:45

I am in my 30's and don't know how to fix this, I'm really embarrassed so please be kind, what makes it worse is I'm a qualified (although not practicing anymore) makeup artist. I can make other people skin look flawless, and my eye make up is fire I promise! Wink

I can't stop this happening to any make up I apply to my nose. I use a cleanser, moisturiser then leave it to absorb and dry. Then a mixed pigment primer (I have very red skin on my nose/cheeks from lupus) then any foundation I use ends up like the picture, only happens on my nose. Am I doing something really wrong? I'd love to be able to wear make up now and again (masks are really helping with this issue at the moment)

If it helps, my skin is dry everywhere apart the t-zone which is always red and oily.

Can someone talk me through how to fix it.
I have looked at tutorials on YouTube etc but it's not application of the makeup I'm struggling with. It's my skin!

Yeah, rosacea was my first thought.

thickthighs73 · 04/12/2021 20:10

Why not go to a make up counter at JL for example? At least you can get them to try out a few products out first before you commit to buying something? as well all know good cosmetics aren’t cheap

Staryflight445 · 04/12/2021 20:12

What foundation are you using?

This happens to me if I don’t use something oil based like nars sheer glow

Blahblahblah40 · 04/12/2021 20:18

What foundations do you use? Are you using powder to set? What’s left looks kind of ‘cakey’ iykwim. I have very oily skin and can’t use powder to set or a matte finish foundation. I just use a heavier liquid foundation or CC cream these days as it’s easier to touch up when required.
It could also be that your cleanser and moisturiser isn’t working properly for your t-zone. Maybe worth a consultation with a professional skincare person.

HermioneWeasley · 04/12/2021 20:20

Have you tried using a mineral foundation rather than liquid? I love bare minerals matte

lunepremiere79 · 04/12/2021 20:23

I've had this exact issue before and have tried many different primers/moisturizers but nothing helped .. Applying with a brush is a good start and also using the right foundation. if your skin is oily you might be over-cleansing, meaning that you skin then tries to overcompensate by producing more oil, resulting in a make-up mess by early afternoon. I've found that oil cleansing in the PM, then washing with just water in the AM starts balancing my skin out with time and my skin has become normal. I hardly ever get oiliness in the t-zone now that I've been following this regime. I also use mineral powder foundation instead of liquid now, which also helps. My skin has honestly never looked as good!

DontKnowWhatToThink7 · 04/12/2021 20:24

I have really dry skin. Jojoba oil and exfoliation have really helped my skin. I alsl stopped using full coverage foundation and started using tinted moisturiser and cream blushers. It's made such a difference.

Indecisivelurcher · 04/12/2021 20:28

Have you ever tried rosalique? Might be worth getting a sample.

crochetmylifeaway · 04/12/2021 20:28

I really struggle to get foundation to cover under my eyes at the top of my cheeks and over my nose. I try to powered and it just wipes away. I found the solution though!

I use the elf putty primer. Then I powder with a loose powder. More than a dusting but less than a bake. Tap it on then foundation on top. Then before the foundation sets more loose powder. Concealer then - you guessed it - more powder! I bake this time.

Finally I can cover the bags under my eyes and my red cheeks and nose and not have it come off before I get to setting spray.

Lineofconcepcion · 04/12/2021 20:33

Similar problems here. I switched to Clarins cleanser followed by serum (not double serum) and every 3 or 4 days I use their fake tan. I stopped using foundation altogether as it really didn't help me look polished and put together.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 04/12/2021 20:38

Nrtft but have you tried green stick? I use it on my nose as it peels in sun and goes red.

SweetBabyCheeses99 · 04/12/2021 20:40

If you’re going to wear make up then I’d swap day cream with spf for a regular moisturiser without. Foundation and spf just don’t mix IME.

ComeAllYeFaithful · 04/12/2021 20:43

Mine is the same. Oily skin and a red nose. I just assumed it was large pores / lots of oil.

Pbbananabagel · 04/12/2021 20:47

Aldi do a great dupe of the smash box photo finish primer. Also recommend Kiehl’s serums, all kiehls skincare is great and their consultants in store are fantastic at working with you to find the right products if you can visit oneZ

twocandlelady · 04/12/2021 20:47

Use foundation sparingly on your nose too op. Just the residue trim elsewhere.

Bigbonesmeatandgravy · 04/12/2021 20:49

It could be due to using oil and water based products at the same time.
Also, try applying a tiny bit of Benefit Porefessional over the top of your make up, sometimes that helps.

DeeperDownTheRabbitHole · 04/12/2021 21:01
@belimoo - it's not dry, it's oily, it goes clumpy and really patchy, ends up,showing the redness of the skin underneath. I have huge pores that show through too.
Find Goss the make-up artist on YT. He's fabulous and will cover any make-up issue you have whatever your age.

WhatWouldChristineCagneyDo · 04/12/2021 21:16

@Burnamer

Have you tried cosmetic blotting paper/ papier poudre or some such spelling. The Mac one is expensive but fantastic. Blot every time you go to the loo - I found it really helps.
Don't bother with expensive blotting paper. Buy yourself some king size Rizla, preferably silver variety, or blue if you can't get the silver. More effective and only costs pennies.
GreyPurbeckMarble · 04/12/2021 21:27

What foundation do you use? Do you use powder? Do you touch your nose a lot? How would you describe your skin type? I am a makeup artist

Thatsplentyjack · 04/12/2021 21:33

I used to get a bit of an oil t zone but would get dry patches on cheeks. I switched to cerave moisturiser ( I just buy the big two with the pump) and the difference its made is amazing. No more dry patches since starting using it, and never get oily. In the morning I use no cleanser or soap on my face, just water and moisturise then at night, if I've been wearing make up I use micellar water to remove and rinse, or if no make up I use a tiny bit of soap (usually just whatever is lying around, then a skin and me product, then double moisturise.

Goshitstricky · 04/12/2021 21:47

So many replies! Thanks everyone.

I use a Clinique liquid foundation that claims to be for combinations skin and an Elf setting mist but not happy with either tbh. I use Ultra-bland cleanser and Celestial moisturiser from Lush.

I have been through the whole rosacea pathway with a dermatologist before being diagnosed with lupus, the red that is on my nose spreads across my cheeks like a butterfly when I've been outside.

I use a clean beauty blender rather than a brush.

I've tired a setting powder yet.

Interesting about being dehydrated. I'm utterly hopeless at drinking and moisturiser gets sucked up by my skin super quickly.

I think that's a.l the questions asked, I don't wear make up a lot but I'd like to wear it comfortably to work 2/3 days a week without this issue happening. I can hide it behind a mask at the moment but that's not the point. Blush

Try all the tips pps have already given, but if you want another one - remove all the foundation and start again. Sometimes, having just had one lot of foundation on seems to fix the problem. When you re-apply, use a slightly darker foundation on your nose from the foundation you use for the rest of your face. And I agree with the pp who said that the skin on your nose is dehydrated (I think this is why the take off and re-apply trick works - it's because the skin of the nose has sucked in some moisture from the previous application).

Minorissue · 04/12/2021 22:01

@GertrudeBElion is right. Try swapping to a non drying cleanser like a cleansing balm in the mornings, then maybe use serum with hyaluronic acid and a good moisturiser. Don’t be afraid to moisturise. Let it sit then apply makeup with a damp sponge or brush. Exfoliate with an aha/bha twice a week max to avoid overdrying. Over cleansing and dehydration can cause oil production in t zone like this that really messes with makeup. Primer is a waste of money when the underlying issue is the routine

ChocAuVin · 04/12/2021 22:06

I’ve never moisturised my nose in my entire life Confused

OP, sure you have tried this, but… have you tried ditching the primer and just using the foundation?

LazySundayPlease · 04/12/2021 22:08

My skin does this. Definitely dehydrated

I find two nights of Estée Lauder night serum fixes it. It is soooo expensive though. Wish I could find something that I could afford to use every night. I tend to just use it 2 nights a week at most!
