Embarrassing make up issue (pic included)

Goshitstricky · 04/12/2021 18:45

I am in my 30's and don't know how to fix this, I'm really embarrassed so please be kind, what makes it worse is I'm a qualified (although not practicing anymore) makeup artist. I can make other people skin look flawless, and my eye make up is fire I promise! Wink

I can't stop this happening to any make up I apply to my nose. I use a cleanser, moisturiser then leave it to absorb and dry. Then a mixed pigment primer (I have very red skin on my nose/cheeks from lupus) then any foundation I use ends up like the picture, only happens on my nose. Am I doing something really wrong? I'd love to be able to wear make up now and again (masks are really helping with this issue at the moment)

If it helps, my skin is dry everywhere apart the t-zone which is always red and oily.

Can someone talk me through how to fix it.
I have looked at tutorials on YouTube etc but it's not application of the makeup I'm struggling with. It's my skin!

I haven't tried this myself, but read that eyelid primer can fix an oily nose causing the foundation to separate. Eyelids fold and get oily so primer for them has to be a bit tougher.

The tip I saw recommended dabbing the eyelid primer on your nose, spraying it with some setting spray, then applying the foundation over it, preferably with a stippling brush.

Might be worth a try?

Kshhuxnxk · 04/12/2021 22:15

You need to exfoliate regularly and moisturise but also most important is your primer should match your foundation. - so if your foundation is water based your primer should be tooI. Same for moisturiser - if you use oil-free moisturiser then you need to use oil free foundation.

madmomma · 04/12/2021 22:18

lazysunday is it the advanced night repair that you use? If it is, loreal have just brought out a cheaper dupe called something like midnight serum. It's in a brown bottle, and I think I actually prefer it. Does the same thing anr used to do for me, only I can afford to use it every night!

Lifeisbeautiful01 · 04/12/2021 22:23

I have large very noticeable pores. I always thought I had greasy skin and my foundation did this (your photo) very time. I then had a facial where they used facial oil. I was sceptical as I thought the oil would be too greasy but it was a revelation! I use oil at least twice a day now, very liberally and it is the only solution for me!

supercatlady · 04/12/2021 22:23

Have you tried Rosalique to bring down the redness first?

GreyGoose1980 · 04/12/2021 22:29

I have an issue with redness / oily skin on my T zone and dry elsewhere on my face and struggled to work out the right skin care routine. I find using gentle products for sensitive skin (not for dry or oily) really helps in terms of not causing more of a reaction. Even when I have a break out anything with azelaic acid seems in irritate it more, drying it out but also causing it to produce more oil ( which it looks like your skin could be doing from the picture) . I can only use cream cleanser not washes as they are too drying. For moisturiser I use Olay day cream for sensitive skin. However I don’t actually moisturise the T zone itself. You mention a Clinique foundation. Do you use the Clinique stay matte oil free foundation? If not I’d give this one a try. I find it the best foundation for my skin. I don’t use a primer as I try and limit the amount of products I use to avoid reactions but like pp I don’t think the one you are using is right for your skin.

Why not use a dry mineral make up (that looks like a powder when applying). Lovely coverage and very natural. Bare Escentuals, IT Cosmetics Celebration foundation are both great. No primer needed. Great for oily skin as well.

atomicdeer · 04/12/2021 22:37

@Goshitstricky
not to be confronting or offer any unwarranted advice but I only say this b/c i also have lupus and problem skin- you don't have rosacea, you have a malar rash which I am sure you already know.

you need to use a proper sunscreen every single day (yes, even when it's snowing), no moisturiser with SPF. sun exposure and some types of artificial light is SO BAD for people with lupus (there's literally no escaping it even in winter.) it can't be overstated. when I don't wear sunscreen for a day, my face literally flakes over my cheek and nose area and gets hot and painful. i think if you get the sunscreen thing under control your skin would be far more manageable.

you might even be able to get it prescribed. but if not I have some great facial sunscreens i can recommend.

apologies if I've overstepped- i know it's annoying when someone gives unasked for medical advice but trust me i've been there and i speak from grim experience.

CouncilHousedAndViolentBaby · 04/12/2021 22:40

Mine used to do this!! I use nivea mens sensitive post shave balm as primer(BlushBlush)and it's never done it since

twocandlelady · 04/12/2021 22:40

@atomicdeer what is molar rash?

limmylee · 04/12/2021 22:53

Forget the makeup and focus on your skin.
See a good aestheticism who will analyse your skin and give you a routine to follow.
Cleanse, tone, serum and moisturiser morning and night, and SPF over moisturiser every morning. Don't just buy generic products, get ones suited to your skin.
I used to think that I had dry/combination skin but it's actually oily dehydrated skin so since areas are quick to look moist, while others flake at times. It takes work but the right toner can make a huge difference when you're consistent.
Get the skincare right and the makeup will sit much better quickly.

violetbunny · 04/12/2021 23:04

Agree 100% with @limmylee - focus on getting your skincare right first. If the underlying skin is well prepped then it will make applying makeup a thousand times easier.

PumpkinSpiceGirl · 04/12/2021 23:25

Watching with interest, your nose is my nose OP!

ellyeth · 04/12/2021 23:36

The youtube information re silicone v. water based primers and foundations was very helpful. Thank you.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 04/12/2021 23:51

What do you use to apply your foundation? I have quite large pores and found that a damp beauty blender made a huge difference for me. I use Fenty Pro Filt'r foundation which is also brilliant.

Cocolapew · 05/12/2021 00:01
@atomicdeer what is molar rash?
Malar rash is a rash that Lupus causes, it goes across the cheeks and over the nose. Its usually known as butterfly rash because it resembles the shape of one.

This makes a huge difference to me. Also avoid any "stripping" cleansers or toners. Jojoba oil is good. It feels counter intuitive to put oil on an oily nose but it works.
MoltonSilver · 05/12/2021 01:37

Celestial Moisturiser is made with almond oil. The oil is causing your foundation to seperate. Honestly, it's not your skin. It's the products.

When I was younger I used to use Nivea Lotion and this regularly used to happen to the foundation on my nose. As a test, why not try the foundation with no moisturiser or primer.

Staryflight445 · 05/12/2021 06:12

Which one op? As even their stay matte oil free liquid foundation is aimed at combination skin.

It would certainly flake up on me.

stevalnamechanger · 05/12/2021 06:24

I wash my face , leave damp and apply Vaseline on the advise of Dr Natalia Spierlings :D give it a go

( Dr Natalia is great Derm! )

Do this the nights I am not using tret

Suma2021 · 05/12/2021 06:45

You've said you're hopeless at drinking water so honestly I'd suggest starting there, drinking loads of water.

Could you perhaps just strip things right back for now, focus on the SPF only and drinking water and give your skin a break from makeup / other products and see what happens?

Personally how my skin looks has always been linked to my diet / hydration, and looks its best when I use as little products as possible. Sometimes products don't combine well, as other posters have suggested, so it may just be a matter of changing what you use to figure out the culprit.

I hope you get it sorted Smile

Goshitstricky · 05/12/2021 07:40

Loads to try here. Thanks everyone.

@atomicdeer is right, it's a lupus malar rash. If I go a day without any spf I get a really red, angry stripe across my nose and both cheeks, even when my other lupus symptoms are under control.

I'm going to save this thread and go through a few things and see if I can create a really good skincare routine and up my water intake.

Thanks again. Smile

In the same way people pay you for makeup - if its really bothering you I would pay someone expert in skin to assess and resolve it.
