Long life Woollen or Cashmere Jumpers

Hi Style and sourcing gurus of MN.

I am asking/ have been asked to give the link for my xmas present. Am very lucky as the budget is up to £180!! but obv do not need to use it all.

I think I would like a long life piece, so a cashmere or woollen jumper in greens, navy or burgundy. Boring yet I have only cheaper ones, or grey which I know washes me out.

Am a true autumn colouring and VERY pear-shaped size 16 for context.

I would love something that will last years, and hopefully from an ethical brand etc. but no idea where to even start.

Am building my capsule wardrobe up piece by piece so will wear mostly with jeans or over a dress.
Any ideas for where to look in person or online would be most welcomed as this is not familiar shopping of Tu, Next and M&S where I am trying to move on from...

halp!

COS has good quality cashmere.

I love Brora for good quality classic cashmere that will last.

But £180 won't go very far there I'm afraid to say - unless you can wait for the sale?

Or look at John Lewis?

EBay has great cashmere pieces in that you can find some real (unworn) bargains on there.

Oooo how much is a good sweater going for those days then?

I was lucky enough to get a cashmere jumper in a fire sale from Edinburgh Wollen Mill. It still looks as bright and feels as soft as the day I bought it (circa 10 years ago). Quick look on the website had some cashmere ones for £120 so might be worth a look.

Cashmere or merino is devine and lasts for ages if worn with some care.

London cashmere company

I have a Lands End cashmere sweater that used to belong to my father and it’s still super soft and in great condition. So that’s definitely long lasting! They are not a fashionable company but I think they still do great quality basics and their customer service is fab.

Scour sales by companies like Eribe and Brora, and check out good used cashmere on eBay. Your budget may well get you more than one good piece. Not all cashmere is equal - some of the newer cashmere is thin and wears less well. Finding a good vintage piece from a well known company such as Lyle and Scott or Johnston’s of Elgin will get you great quality. If you are worried about moths in 2nd hand wool and cashmere, put the garment in the freezer in a plastic bag for a day or two; that should kill off anything that may be lurking. Enjoy spending!
