Warming layer for a party frock

Lol

I have a couple of dresses - a long shirt dress and an above the knee short of swingy shift effort. These are the closest things I will ever come to dressing up but the sad reality is they are the kind of level of dresses most people would wear out for lunch with their parents but in my joggers and sweatshirt world they constitute red carpet glamour.

I will be wearing them out and about in the day time - maybe Christmas Day, maybe if we still have it the works Christmas do which is an afternoon thing. I will need a layer to keep me warm as I am a delicate pixie.

The temptation to chuck on any old cardi is immense. However I feel like will not pass muster in the style stakes. What do people wear over the top of a slightly smart day dress inside?

Can you wear a long sleeved thermal t-shirt underneath?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/12/2021 09:05

Or a velvet jacket?

Silverstreaks · 04/12/2021 09:08

I'd go with the long sleeve thermal too. You can get s huge range of colours. Discount ex M&S on eBay. Uniqlo Heat tech or Primark are where to look.
Thick tights in a complimentary colour and you'll be toasty.

I've got some long, fitted vests from primark, they come down to the top of my thighs and are great under dresses for added warmth without bulk.

daisypond · 04/12/2021 09:12

Yes, wear thermal things underneath. Uniqlo have a huge range, but I also have stuff from Primark and M&S.

Problem with a layer underneath is that you can't easily remove it if it gets too hot!

If your style is relatively casual what about a chunky but sparkly cardi over the top?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/12/2021 09:35

I just bought a new velvet jacket in M&S. #enabler

When I was a 90s indie kid I lived in velvet jackets. I had an amazing dark green one I literally wore til it fell apart (you used to get heaps in Oxfam or from our 70s dads directly).

I may sneak a look....

Re velvet jackets. You can find them in vintage shops or eBay vintage.

My DM has some (Beatles sergeant pepper era types but I think they’re too small for me now!

@greatape - well that sounds like your solution/style.

You might wish to experiment with various velvet dresses, skirts etc for an evening look as then both warm but also glam.
