Curly girl method

DD(15) has long red, wavy hair and wants to try curly girl over Christmas. I thought of threatening her to a whole range of stuff for Christmas. Is Bumble and bumble any good? What else could ai buy her to help her along her curly way?

I like Aveda sap moss shampoo and conditioner. I also use their confixer gel. Umberto Gianonni curl jelly is also a brilliant gel.
Noughty have a good curly girl range. Available on Amazon.
I have found that it is very much trial and error. It's quite a palaver sorting out what works for your hair.

I'd go super cheap to start just to go through the transition and work out what suits. Maybe cheap conditioner for washing and then a more expensive styling product. Shea moisture is really nice for a mid price and the purple 10 in 1 is a good all rounder. I also like faith in nature conditioner for a cheaper co wash/condition.

Also love Umberto Giannini curl jelly although I think now curly girl groups say no parabens so not strictly cg friendly but I use it anyway and don't think the no paraben rule is one to follow! I just do no sulphate and no silicone.

Curly girl works best for wavy hair that is damaged & would be curly otherwise AND where the individual strands of hair are thick, otherwise the products can overwhelm it and sometimes cause hair loss.

If her wavy hair is actually damaged straight hair then the process for fixing it would be really different.

I read you say she wants to start over Christmas, but I hope she understands that it’s a process and she won’t get fabulous curls overnight!

That being said, I’d start cheap and cheerful. I use pound shop banana conditioner to cowash. Starting out and I still do this now, I deep condition every time but that because my hair needs it. I use Vatika egg and honey deep conditioner which lasts months and costs about a fiver from Amazon.

I also use Noughty leave in conditioner. Their range is now in Sainsbury’s . And finally VO5 gel, or Boucleme gel if I’m feeling flush from Amazon.

Main thing I’d say is conditioner and lots of it. I bought about 500 disposable shower caps like you get in hotels for about £8 from Amazon to use when doing leave in conditioning. Still not used them all 4 years down the line.

I've tried it and tbh the best I've managed is just Alberto Balsam (dead cheap) shampoo and conditioner and NO products afterwards.

My hair is actually shiny and with better curls.. all the gels etc just make it yuk.

After years and years of expensive shampoo/conditioner/products (I've tried them all) it's quite liberating.

There's a nice trial set you can get from only curls which is curly girl friendly. I quite like their stuff but need a stronger gel, or you could get her a few bits from noughty range and a satin pillowcase/scrunchie

Wash with conditioner, leave a conditioner in. Try coconut (I’m curly girl but my hair doesn’t like it )mine likes protein and palmers olive. Satin pillowcase and pineapple hair to protect the curls. Try diffusing, detangle when wet ! I’ve bought lots of different products and gave high expectations from them, only to get a load of frizz 🙄

BigHeartyTruffle · 01/12/2021 22:00

I’ve just started using Only Curls and it’s lovely. I also half a squirt of cantu wave whip mousse, then drop my hair down into a T-shirt (plopping) and tie it up on top of my head.
I have the umberto giannini curl jelly stuff but it weighs my hair down.

I got the set of minis and the sleep turban, which is great, but the products, just no. The gel made my hair go all clarted up and looked and felt absolutely horrible.
