My hands are wrecked, recommend a luxury hand cream?

Muststopeating · 29/11/2021 22:02

Inspired by an MN thread, I am requesting a few luxury items that I wouldn't normally buy myself for Christmas (especially when we've just sunk every penny into an extension).

Just had 3rd DC so might be hormones, might be winter, might be kitchen building but my hands and nails are wrecked. Cuticles are a mess and nails are splitting vertically down the middle.

Can anyone recommend hand cream/cutilcle treatment etc that actually works.

Oh and while I'm here, same queation for lip treatment. (I am literally crumbling).

This stuff www.boots.com/aveeno-skin-relief-lotion-200ml-10094191 - I keep a tube by my bedside and a larger pump bottle in both the bathroom and kitchen. Use as often as needed, only thing that stops huge painful cracks in the skin around nails. Flexitol at night if it gets super bad.

Carbis · 30/11/2021 00:17

Another vote for Kiehl’s hand salve, nothing compares. I love Nuxe lip balm.

AnnieSnap · 30/11/2021 00:32

I’ve tried many over the years, but when I tried this I knew my search was over. Despite being a lotion, not a cream, it’s incredibly nourishing and softening and given the size, it’s very reasonably priced.

This 100%
I'm a nurse so a lot of hand washing and sore hands over the years and plenty of hand creams tried!
This doesn't sting, isn't sticky and works!
The only one I use now Smile

@HelplesslyHoping

O'keefes. They do an intense foot cream too that is good for particularly dry areas of the hands. Avoid any luxury products with strong scents- even natural scents.
“Avoid any luxury products with strong scents”

Obviously not everyone likes the same scent or any scent but why should strong scents be avoided in luxury creams? You phrased it as though it’s a good idea for everyone, is there a reason for that or did you just mean it is your own personal preference? I’m a huge fan of Byredo Suede hand cream and I get loads of compliments on the smell but obviously it’s subjective.

Suma2021 · 30/11/2021 04:15

Definitely O'keefes Working Hands. I have to wash my hands so often and this is the only cream to keep my hands in good condition and can keep up with me.

Also O'Keefes Lip Repair balm (unscented).

I love the Molton Brown hand creams for a luxury treat! The rhubarb one smells amazing! Their lip saver is brilliant too for anyone still looking for the holy grail of lip balms.

However, the hands down (haha!) best hand cream I've found is Aldi Lacura hemp (a Body Shop dupe) which is super moisturising! It doesn't smell much either as that's what put me off the body shop version. It's one of their special buys so I stock up when I see them in store!

Hobbitch · 30/11/2021 07:32

A combination of Weleda Skin Food and Zerobase has fixed my chronically dry hands.

Malibuismysecrethome · 30/11/2021 07:34

Seriously, smother your hands and nails in Vaseline before bed and during the day, they will soon heal. Best lip balm I’ve ever had is Clarins.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 30/11/2021 07:35

Aveeno lotion seems to work best for me. Either range is fine but I probably prefer the blue on balance.

Oh and a hand wash with vitamin E in it seems to help too.

Intrigued by Nursem though, I’d not heard of it until this thread. Might give it a try.

DrNo007 · 30/11/2021 07:36

Weleda skin food and wear rubber gloves for most chores to protect hands.

LefttoherownDevizes · 30/11/2021 07:46

@RatInADollhouse we were always told that when skin is split (in our case eczema) avoids fragrancef products as much more likely to become sensitised and thus allergic. Plus just irritating when skin barrier is already compromised

AnnieSnap · 30/11/2021 13:33

@NightmareSlashDelightful sadly, Aveeno is still tested on animals.

BobbieT1999 · 30/11/2021 13:35

Body Shop Henna is genuinely brilliant

Muststopeating · 30/11/2021 13:43

Well I've realised that I grossly exaggerated my wrecked hands. They are rough and a bit dry, but certainly not cracked or bleeding. Sorry to those of you properly suffering.

My cuticles are shredded and my nails are ripping.

This thread will save me a fortune. I realised I was given some L'Occataine stuff a couple of years ago whcih I haven't used. A lotion and a foot cream so will use them up first.

With 3 kids under 5 I also have a couple of bottles of Aveeno around so will use that during the day.

If they fail will try the various other suggestions, thank you! Aldi/Body Shop seems to be highly rated.

I do use O Keefes lip stuff, I have the balm and the overnight one. It does help and is the best I've found so far. I suspect my problem is not frequent enough application (see 3 kids under 5). Might treat myself to the Elizabeth Arden.

I do have 2.5 tubes of Lansinoh Lanolin which someone suggested and tried it when my lips first suggested cracking but its never been any good for me (didn't help my cracked nipples either).

Thanks everyone!

Aveeno. Then treat from the inside out by eating avocados. Plus supplements of omega three plus calcium for nail strength. And stop using liquid hand soaps switch to an old fashioned bar.

mamakoukla · 30/11/2021 13:57

Another vote for the Kiehls hand cream. I’ve tried loads but this is what gets my hands back in working order. As the weather gets colder, my skin hardens around the finger tips and cuticles and literally cracks open. Fingertips are like Velcro sticking onto fabrics. This stuff fixes it and then it’s more about maintenance.

Lips - 8 hour cream. Not for everyone as it has a strong scent and thick texture. Really effective and useful for when you get dry skin from nose blowing during a cold. Put on at night, good as new by morning. Also use on dry cuticles. It’s been another miracle worker for me and dry cracking skin, including on face.

Another vote for Kiehl’s hand salve, nothing compares. I love Nuxe lip balm.
These 2 for me too! Best I have found
Geordieoldgirl · 30/11/2021 15:56

I find Liz Earle cream lovely- not greasy and sinks in immediately and doesn’t sting sore skin. It is pricey though, so I’ll be trying some of the recommendations above. But I really recommend the orange flower hand wash - it is the gentlest I have tried. Again it is expensive but they often have special offers on line.

dhfoody47 · 30/11/2021 17:44

I use the creams from a small social enterprise in Wales called Myddfai Trading Company, great products and feels good that they 'give something back' 😊

IntermittentParps · 30/11/2021 17:55

I seem to have chronically dry hands. They're ageing really badly too Sad
Just ordered some Nursem. I'm excited!
I also like Dr Organic: nice ingredients, generous sized tube and a decent price, so you can slather it on, and lots of different fragrances. Often on offer at Holland & Barratt too.

nickyschof · 30/11/2021 18:07

Aldi have copies of a few creams mentioned here - body shop hemp cream, Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream, aveeno hand cream, and a couple not mentioned - neutrogenia intensive cream, and Nivea. There's also a dupe for something called pawpaw ointment.

Curtainpoleofdoom · 30/11/2021 18:12

Exiting Nicky! Is it easy to tell they’re dupes? It’s a trek to my nearest Aldi and it’s mad when you’re in there-I like to know exactly what I’m going for!

I use the original Neutrogena on my hands, lips and face (at night) too on occasion!
