Box hair dye or stick with salon?

I currently have my hair dyed at a salon every 8-10 weeks. No bleach at all, just a couple of different shades of brown. I originally started going to the salon a few years ago when i had ombre, and ive just stuck with going ever since.

However, it costs approx £100 a time and i just dont know it i can justify it any more, especially when i could just buy a box dye and do it myself. I know the cost is pretty average but thats actually a huge chunk of my spending money to put aside £50 a month for!

I know it probably wont look quite as good if i do it myself (i used to do it myself a few years ago) but what should i do?? Scrimp & stick with the salon or just do it at home?

I think you will struggle to make it look natural with a box dye - it would be blocky I think. But perhaps someone will come along with a way to prevent that.

I’ve mainly box dyed all my adult life due to the time and expense of salon visits. I’m usually pretty happy with the results although I’m lucky because my natural hair colour had different tones in it so the dye doesn’t make it completely the same colour all over - you can see different shades. You do have to trial and error a bit though, I’ve bought some brands where the ‘permanent’ colour fades out after a few washes.

Thank you 🙂

Im not massively fussed about doing mine 2 shades of brown at home.... im worried i will start box dying jt, regret it in a few months then go back to my hairdresser with my tail between my legs Grin

I would stick with the hairdresser. Box dye is awful for your hair, I've never found one that doesn't make it frizz. But my hair is prone to frizz

oviraptor21 · 28/11/2021 19:20

My box dye looks good and at least it's consistent. I had variable results with salon - any change of hairdresser seemed to lead to a different end result. Plus it's way cheaper and way quicker.

Agadorsparticus · 28/11/2021 19:22

I'd look for a cheaper hairdresser's. I pay £35 for roots and blow-dry every month. It's a small owner-salon but she's an excellent colourist. I'd not go back to home dyes again.

oviraptor21 · 28/11/2021 19:22

I don't think I could pay less than £100 here and it was the salon that gave the reddish tinge (actually more like orange - that was my first salon visit).

oviraptor21 · 28/11/2021 19:22

*should say .... last salon visit!

peppersauce1984 · 28/11/2021 19:27

I box dye mine every 4weeks or so. I usually just do the grey roots. I have naturally very dark hair so I think a dark chocolate brown/ black dye is really easy to do. All my friend with blonde hair get theirs done professionally but I think it's harder to achieve the right colour of yours lighter. A fiver a box of dye is a bargain!

SixQuidGames · 28/11/2021 19:34

I would stick with the salon. Everyone thinks they can replicate the colour the hairdresser does and in real life they mostly can’t.

jelly79 · 28/11/2021 19:35

I've boxed dyed for years and I love it.

caringcarer · 28/11/2021 19:36

I use a box due and have dark brown hair. I think it looks fine. I do it once every 4-5 weeks. £6.50. I used to use a salon but with Covid used the box due. I don't think anyone noticed.

whatisthisinhere · 28/11/2021 19:52

If you don't get the colour right you'll end up with odd looking different colours in your hair. Speaking from personal experience - I ended up with three different colours, even though I used the same box dye and the same shade

flowerbomb21 · 28/11/2021 20:02

Salon 100%

rainbowcakes · 28/11/2021 22:01

Thank you everyone for your advice. I'll weigh it all up but looks like i should probs make savings elsewhere & stick with my hairdresser Smile
