Is it me or are dry shampoos like the emperor's new clothes?

I've tried every single one in existence and they do naff all for my hair except make it smell and feel weird. Still greasy but now greasy and full of some weird product.

Sali Hughes recommended a living proof one recently that I bought because she said it was nothing like normal dry shampoo and actually cleans your hair, leaving it feeling almost like you've shampooed it.

Absolute rubbish! Anyone else find this??

why not just wash hair if it needs washing
Because that would be at least once a day but that irritates my scalp.

woodhill · 28/11/2021 16:19

I find batiste ok. I bought the Boots one but haven't used it yet.

I think I used Percy & Reed, it was ok

It gives my hair more body and it can go another day.

swapcicles · 28/11/2021 16:22

I just pop a bit of baby powder in my hair if I'm on an early the next day and cba to do it that night.
Works better I find and sleeping with it in makes sure it's not obvious.
It can make hair a bit static though but as I have to tie my hair up it doesn't matter tbh.
A lot cheaper than dry shampoo too.

@Cherry321

Yep it’s almost like if you’re hair is greasy, it’s too late. Altho a quick squirt on freshly washed hair will keep it looking cleaner for longer.
Agree. And putting on before bed works well. On before bed and brush out on the morning.

Yes the texture is different to hair without but it's something I can easily put up with

surreygirl1987 · 28/11/2021 16:30

why not just wash hair if it needs washing yeh that would be every day for me too. Dry shampoo gives me the extra day so I can wash it every other day (or occasionally go three days if I'm really desperate!).

HerRoyalHappiness · 28/11/2021 16:33

why not just wash hair if it needs washing

  1. That would be daily
  2. I'm disabled. I'm lucky if I can wash it once a week if my mum can't help help whatever reason.
woodhill · 28/11/2021 17:06

Mine takes ages to dry so yes another day especially when rushing out to work in the winter

EssexLioness · 28/11/2021 17:07

I find batisse does help a bit but I try not to use it as it makes me scalp really itchy and I don’t like the feeling of it in my hair

BangingOn · 28/11/2021 17:12

I finally got to grips with dry shampoo after having a keratin treatment and needing to extend time between washes. What works best for me is spraying it onto my roots before bed, working it in with my fingers, then brushing it through in the morning.

olivehater · 28/11/2021 17:12

I can’t get on with them . I kind of like the aveda which is like talc but even that I don’t love.
I think if you have naturally greasy shiny hair it’s never going to work as well. It’s aimed more at people with dryer more textured hair that doesn’t actually need washing all that much to get just one more day out of it.
It works the worst for people that actually do have to wash their hair every day!!!

WellTidy · 28/11/2021 17:17

The Lee Stafford one with pink clay is the only one that works and doesn’t make my hair feel powdery or dirty when I touch it

The batiste one (but not the ones with any colour in them) works well for me too, but it does make my hair feel quite full of powder when I touch it

Apart from those two, I haven’t found one that works for me

My hair is fine, kinky and shoulder length

Bontanics · 28/11/2021 17:51

They work for me which is great because I have fine greasy hair but they all make my scalp itch no matter how little I try to use.

Mother87 · 29/11/2021 19:48

LOVE them... I use an Aveda one that IS quite expensive, but I usually put it on my Christmas list & it lasts a year... it smells beautiful and hides the oil/gives me a bit of 'lift' until it's washed again..

Thecazelets · 29/11/2021 20:17

They don't work for me either. Just make my hair feel stiff and powdery, but still greasy, no matter how carefully I brush it out. Like an eighteenth century wig must have felt. I've tried cheap and expensive versions but unfortunately for me and my (thin, blonde, slightly wavy) hair only a daily wash will do. I have used the Klorane one at a festival and just about got away with it for a day, but even then it felt pretty awful.

RobertSmithsLipstick · 29/11/2021 20:18

Sometimes they seem to work better than others.
It's all very strange.

EnidFrighten · 29/11/2021 20:36

I started using soapnut shampoo and I only have to wash it every three days or so now. And it's shiny and lovely.

All these products just load down your hair, then you wash the crap out by stripping it with shampoo full of detergents and alcohol etc, your scalp pumps out the grease to compensate, etc etc.

IcelandicCabin · 29/11/2021 20:40

Oh I adore dry shampoo.

i have very very fine hair. And I wash in the morning and by the time I get to the night my hair is limp and greasy. So I spritz some dry shampoo and it lifts and refreshes. I love it. My hair is more bouncy.

Now that I am menopausal my hair behavies differently and I can on occasion not wash it for the second day in the morning but use dry shampoo and it gets me through the morning.

Also, back in the day when I did long haul flights I swore by it. I hate getting off a plane with a slick of black greasy hair down my foreheAD.

Dry Shampoo is possibly thre best single beauty thing I have in my arsenal.

BettyOBarley · 29/11/2021 20:45

I love dry shampoo!

Only Batiste though, and even their brunette one is rubbish.

dontgobaconmyheart · 30/11/2021 16:08

Interesting it's such a mixed bag. I hate dry shampoo, even if it does technically make my hair look less greasy, it feels absolutely disgusting in my hair and on my scalp. I hate the idea of rubbing it all over the pillows and my skin overnight and I do think you can sometimes tell when people have used it, the strong smell on their hair and that slightly odd matte look it has, especially on darker tones. I'm brunette and I do feel it just looks a bit weird.

I wish i could get on with it though, if i could i'd make use of it all the time and revel in not having to wash my hair so often.

RobertSmithsLipstick · 30/11/2021 17:26

There is a kind of liquidy mousse that refreshes hair between washes.
I helped someone do her hair with it and it seemed ok.

crimsonlake · 30/11/2021 17:51

I have actually started using medicated talc as a replacement for spray on dry shampoo. It seems to be lighter and finer than normal talc.
