Is it me or are dry shampoos like the emperor's new clothes?

I've tried every single one in existence and they do naff all for my hair except make it smell and feel weird. Still greasy but now greasy and full of some weird product.

Sali Hughes recommended a living proof one recently that I bought because she said it was nothing like normal dry shampoo and actually cleans your hair, leaving it feeling almost like you've shampooed it.

Absolute rubbish! Anyone else find this??

Oh and my pro tip is to use it immediately on clean hair and put it in at night and not in the morning. So once you’ve blow dried it, stick some on the roots before you go to bed and every night thereafter. That way it does it’s dark magic overnight and you wake up with it having worked it’s way into the roots rather than having that dusty scalp look.

Batista works on my greasy, lank locks.
It thickens it a bit, too, so it's ok for an updo.

So Wash hair Dry hair Put dry shampoo on freshly washed hair?
FictionalCharacter · 28/11/2021 00:13

Batiste Heavenly Volume works a treat for me. A few others I’ve tried haven’t been great.

YokoOnosHat · 28/11/2021 00:17

@DaisyNGO yes, as bonkers as that sounds. It’s then there, ready to soak up the grease. My hair gets quite sweaty at night too, so I find putting it on at night from the time I’ve washed it negates the sweating too. It’s then got some volume in the morning when I come to style it.

WhatHoMarjorie · 28/11/2021 00:19

Yes, put dry shampoo on freshly washed hair. So it stops grease before it has a chance to start. I've read the 'put it on overnight' thing before but I don't see the point. I just spray it on, leave for 30 seconds, and then turn my head upside down and rub it vigorously into my roots. No point just patting at it.

EntreMummy · 28/11/2021 00:28

I bloody love dry shampoo!

And the Living Proof one was an absolute revelation to me when I first tried it - it doesn’t give hair that powdery look like batiste does and doesn’t feel stiff (and I love the smell!) Although too expensive for me to use very often, so I have the batiste as well.

I have very thick, very straight dark hair (quite short)
Dry shampoo means I now wash my hair about once per week. I put it on when it starts to feel greasy and it buys me another 2-3 days. Also gives it more body when starts to feel limp.

BobbieT1999 · 28/11/2021 00:31

My hair's goth black, I just use a bit of baby powder - dust my hands and run them through roots. Works better than dry shampoos, feels better and no grey marks. Applying some before bed works well.

Have you tried different shampoos though?

Taurus221 · 28/11/2021 00:56

I have fine hair that can get greasy quite quickly and is really flat if I don't use dry shampoo. I've tried so many over the years. The only one that works for me is Batiste XXL (not the 'Volume' one.) although Batiste in general are great - Boots or Superdrug usually stock the XXL one, if not in store, online.

Use it straight after washing and drying. It's brilliant, loads of volume and I can go days in between washing. And it doesn't break the bank. I also often find a lot of them are so heavily perfumed they make me feel unwell and have to wash it off. Batiste is great though.

GertrudeKerfuffle · 28/11/2021 01:11

I know this sounds crazy, but I use cornflour, with a tiny bit of lavender oil in. It works a treat and means I only need to wash my hair once a week.

I do this because I once picked up some dry shampoo in Boots (not a spray one) and saw the main ingredient was Zea mays starch, and knowing this is a posh scientific way of writing cornflour, decided to dry what I already had in the kitchen I'm a tight git and a bit of a hippy.

Flittingaboutagain · 28/11/2021 01:38

Since I started washing my hair just twice a week I found it gradually got used to it and now dry shampoo gives me one more day before it needs a wash. So for instance, if I wash my hair on a Monday, by Thursday it could do with a wash but dry shampoo makes it last until Friday. It took about six months to go from looking like it needed washing every other day (which it was used to). When I washed it so often the dry shampoo didn't seem to help at all.

This is exactly what I do! Works a treat.
ratussbaguss · 28/11/2021 09:02

Well see, this thread is exactly what I mean! I just find it SO HARD to imagine there are people for whom it works! 😂 it's just so bad for me that I really sometimes feel like I'm going mad when I hear this stuff 🤣

Putting it into clean hair is just bonkers to me, because then you wouldn't even get the clean hair feeling at all! But I get where you're coming from, if it's works for you.

I mean, it is great that it does work wonders for some of you. I guess I'll just have to keep washing. I have tried leaving my hair for longer between washes but I just cannot. I do it every 2 days. My hair is fine but thick and the shampoo/conditioner doesn't seem to make a huge difference really. Again, I've tried all of those!

Might try the baby powder suggestion...

I have very thick brown hair and I love dry shampoo. Quite apart from anything else my hair takes forever to dry so I just don't have the time to wash it more than once or twice a week.

I've tried every brand (including Living Proof) and always come back to Batiste. Original and best IMO. I spray it into the roots at night on the 3rd or 4th day after washing, rub it in well and the next morning my hair is big, fresh and bouncy.

ouchmyfeet · 28/11/2021 09:08

Honestly OP, try putting it on before you need it. I would never be able to put it on freshly washed hair as it would be too gutting to make my lovely clean hair feel so horrible, but if I apply it after a day I can get a second day from my hair with it looking fine, sometimes even good!!

MargosKaftan · 28/11/2021 09:12

It does mean I get a 2nd day out of a blow dry, so only bother when ive actually done my hair well. I dont have massively greasy hair though, so I guess it works if you are borderline on washing or not. I have brown hair and find it can make my roots look white unless I use the one for dark hair - which is also good for covering slight grey roots....

MrsFoxyplease · 28/11/2021 09:13

It's basically just spray able talc.
I prefer a small amount of baby talc rubbed vigorously into the roots and brushed through. Works much better until I can wash my hair.

Helouiet · 28/11/2021 09:18

Aveda shampowder is good. Use it sparingly and because it’s not an aersosol or no alcohol it’s effective in soaking up the grease. A bit like talcum powder but finer so you don’t get bits.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 28/11/2021 09:21

Dry shampoo does nothing for my hair, my hair looks and feels better just washing it in warm water under the shower.

Maryward · 28/11/2021 09:25

I prefer to use the baby talc as well !

Mrbob · 28/11/2021 09:32

I make my own. Cornflour and cacao I think it was. Sprinkle it on and brush it through. Works way better and lasts a couple of days which spray on never did. Plus much better for the environment

OneDayIWillBeOrganised · 28/11/2021 09:42

Another vote for the baby powder. Works much better imo.

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 28/11/2021 09:44

Love the stuff !
I put it on second day hair before bed.
I fully spray the roots and wake up in the morning and style my hair and it's got no grease at all .

Livpool · 28/11/2021 09:48

I can't use it either - it makes my head super itchy
