Is it me or are dry shampoos like the emperor's new clothes?

I've tried every single one in existence and they do naff all for my hair except make it smell and feel weird. Still greasy but now greasy and full of some weird product.

Sali Hughes recommended a living proof one recently that I bought because she said it was nothing like normal dry shampoo and actually cleans your hair, leaving it feeling almost like you've shampooed it.

Absolute rubbish! Anyone else find this??

Moroccan Oil one is the best I’ve found. I don’t use it often as I’m still not a fan of the feel afterwards, but in emergencies it’s good.

dizzyupthegirl86 · 28/11/2021 10:09

I agree with moroccanoil. My hair looks lank and greasy at the roots after a day. Batiste makes my hair feel weirdly dry-sticky and my scalp itchy, and my hair looks really dull. Colab was slightly better but didn’t really make my hair look less greasy. Superdrug one was about the same. The L’Oréal one (pink/orangey tin) is alright too - but the moroccanoil one makes my hair look better! Feels like nothing is in my hair and still looks shiny. I’d never have thought I’d be paying £20 a pop but I’ve probably repurchased it 3/4 times now! Would like to try the klorane one though…

Hughes makes a living from being paid to say things like that.

They're all much of a muchness. If you want to actually have a sensation of being clean, it really is a case of washing your hair.

GraceAnatomy · 28/11/2021 10:25

I've tried talc when I've ran out of dry shampoo, makes my hair crazy static and leaves a slight residue

My tip for the best way to apply dry shampoo is after spraying, leave it for about 5 minutes to absorb the grease and then style. If you brush it straight away, you're not giving it time to work. Finger tip massage it in to the hair and then brush hair.

Dry shampoo is one I'd the best things invented for those who normally have to wash their hair daily in my opinion.

I've got really dry hair so I'm not worried about lankness or grease, but I do want a spray that will provide enough texture to get a pony tail to stay in.

Some people recommend dry shampoo for this but it's not great. Texture spray is often really drying too. I use 'apres beach shine spray' from Oribe which is stupidly expensive, smells great and does an OK job but not amazing.

I'd love to know how others with dry hair keep a bit of grip in it?

Taswama · 28/11/2021 10:35

I use it on my DS when he has 'forgotten' to wash his hair the previous night and it looks rank. It makes it look better long enough for him to go to school but it still needs a proper wash in the evening.

Booksandwine80 · 28/11/2021 10:38

I’ve just bought the lush one as trying to steer away from aerosols, has a grapefruit smell

Would salt spray be worth trying? I don’t know whether that would be as drying as texture spray though. Failing that, gentle back combing would be what I’d do.
rifling · 28/11/2021 10:56

They don't work for me either, even Klorane or Battiste.

WhatHoMarjorie · 28/11/2021 11:50

Putting it into clean hair is just bonkers to me, because then you wouldn't even get the clean hair feeling at all! But I get where you're coming from, if it's works for you.

My hair feels just as clean and swishy when I apply it to my blow dried hair. I don't have a tacky or gritty feeling. I rub it in well and it just gives a bit of volume.

BobbieT1999 · 28/11/2021 11:54

@MorrisZapp have you tried texturing gels? Even anti humidity/smoothing gels can add some grip.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 28/11/2021 12:51

No it doesn't really help me, I think its because my hair is so thin.

Hadenoughofthisbullshit · 28/11/2021 12:54

Baby powder is great but you have to shake your hair a lot or you’ll look like your wearing a powdered wig. I wouldn’t use Johnson’s though as it smells awful.

Carboncheque · 28/11/2021 12:58

I love Klorane. It does make my hair feel a bit odd - you are adding powder to your hair so it will change the feel - but the scent isn’t strong or offensive and it definitely makes my hair look cleaner.

DietrichandDiMaggio · 28/11/2021 13:25

@ouchmyfeet

Honestly OP, try putting it on before you need it. I would never be able to put it on freshly washed hair as it would be too gutting to make my lovely clean hair feel so horrible, but if I apply it after a day I can get a second day from my hair with it looking fine, sometimes even good!!
See, this is the problem for me -the way it feels, even if it does look ok.
RiverSkater · 28/11/2021 13:29

I put it on at night, run fingers through then in morning it's nicely done it's work.

Classica · 28/11/2021 13:31

Maybe it depends on your hair texture but I apply dry shampoo to clean hair and I can't feel it? There's no texture, horrible or otherwise. It just stops my hair from getting greasy by the end of the day. And it has the added bonus of giving a bit of volume.

I remember about 20 years ago Batiste was around but you could only find it in few chemists, usually the old-fashioned type. I love that it's so easily available now.

purplesequins · 28/11/2021 13:32

yanbu
why not just wash hair if it needs washing Confused

they (the few I tried many years ago) were shit.

VeganCheesePlease · 28/11/2021 13:32

All it really does for is make my hair look a bit more decent, but I would need to wash it that night. Handy for if I'm on a run of late shifts, don't get my hair washed for a few days and am looking a bit greasy, but no more than that.

Classica · 28/11/2021 13:34

But like all products, it's not going to suit everyone. Doesn't mean it's not a staple for lots of people though.

I don't want to wash my hair every day. And that's what I'd have to do without dry shampoo.
A580Hojas · 28/11/2021 13:42

Dry shampoo does wonders for my very fine straight hair, just gives it a bit of body. I wash it on day 1, dry shampoo it on day 3 and on day 4 it looks the best it ever looks. Then back to limp and pathetic again when I wash it again on day 1.

I bloody love my dry shampoo.

PuppyMonkey · 28/11/2021 14:07

The only one I like is John Frieda - I think it’s him. In a bright pink bottle. Batiste does nothing for me.

I wouldn’t put it on nice clean freshly washed hair though. Wouldn’t it just take all the shine off? Confused

JacquelineCarlyle · 28/11/2021 14:14

@mrselizabethdarcy

I use batiste and think it's amazing! You have to spray the roots and then rub it out with your fingers but it's great.
Me too!
DaisyNGO · 28/11/2021 14:48

I think I might try a salt spray or texturising spray, any recs?

Daily hair washing is just a habit for me

I could save myself the drying time if I have something to liven it up

It's thinning hair, it's not greasy hair.
