Do you tip your hairdresser

I’ve recently started going to a hairdresser after years of doing it myself. I did initially change full scalp bleach to highlights but changed my mind back to scalp bleach. It costs £100, I haven’t tipped her the past two times but I feel like she is expecting one. What do people think?

No, she charges plenty considering I only have a trim that takes about 20 minutes.

Chewbecca · 28/11/2021 17:34

I don’t, I’d rather just be charged the amount needed than have an awkward exchange of an unknown amount.

trader21c · 28/11/2021 17:50

No I don’t feel guilty I am paying for a service they set the prices!

Palosverdesblue · 28/11/2021 17:54

No I don't, hair cut by the salon owner. I don't enjoy the experience (not a terribly friendly place 😬) but the location is convenient and my cut is ok so I keep going.

AnyFucker · 28/11/2021 17:55

Yes, between £5 and £10

She saved my sanity when I had my 1st appointment after COVID lockdowns by, as well as doing a massive rescue of my stress-ravaged hair, just listening to me

Used to. Not now.

Now it's all cards and it's new salon to me so don't know anyone there yet really.
For such a nice place the team at the desk are very non communicative not even responding to pleasant small talk whilst we wait for the card machine. Just vague nodding

So I just can't be arsed to enter a
'can you take cash'/ 'how do I tip' awkward discussion. So I don't.

Pancakeorcrepe · 28/11/2021 18:08

I don’t tip my hairdresser neither do “Christmas gifts” for my hairdresser. I’m trying to cut down on all that. They can just charge the price they want and I’ll pay it but am tired of faffing around with tips, token presents etc.

Akire · 28/11/2021 18:17

I used to years gone by but not now. Prices are so high plus all extra chargers lately I assume they are charging a fair amount to pay their costs and earn a living. I don’t like tipping servers either. They don’t work 10 times harder if I meal cost £10 or £100 but I’m supposed tip £1 or £10 no logical at all

Tip for exceptional service or out of their way but for doing their bog standard job nope.

Exhausteddog · 28/11/2021 18:39

I usually do (£5-10) but I once had a hairdresser come to the house to do my hair. I washed my own hair first and she charged the same as a salon (and I wasn't that happy with the result!)so I didn't tip that time. I usually round up a taxi fayre to give a tip but I don't tip delivery drivers.

Trolltrotters · 29/11/2021 07:12

Nah. I feel weird about tips in general, but I pay over £100 for colour, cut and blow dry - women's hairdressing is so expensive.

I work in health care (not much about minimum wage) and I'd rather continue providing custom than tip. I do buy small things like the occasional coffee (I've been to my hairdresser for ten years now and I text ahead and ask if she'd like anything from Costa) I also bought her a massage voucher last Christmas as she was suffering back pain and my appointment was around Christmas time.

Tipping just feels to me as demeaning and spoils the dynamic.

Boood · 29/11/2021 13:44

Mine is now more than £150 for a cut and colour, so no.

Bellyups · 29/11/2021 13:51

Yes of course. Salon owners may be rolling in it, but that doesn’t mean their employees are. A good hairdresser that makes you feel comfortable = well worth a tip.

It's the salon owner and I pay by card so no. He is not cheap either so a fiver may seem like an insult :) and I would not be giving more than that even to an employee as opposed to the salon owner himself.

DSGR · 29/11/2021 14:04

No but I pay £150 for my hair in a major chain. I always feel guilty but it’s so expensive already

CoastalWave · 29/11/2021 14:10

No. They earn enough!!

Freelance are the worst. How they can justify charging £150 for a cut and colour when they're doing 2 -3 a day is ridiculous. People need to stop paying it. Encouraging it!

Gigia · 29/11/2021 14:25

I do, she works in a salon so doesn't earn loads and does an amazing job. I tip £10 and my root colour and cut/blow dry is £70. I sometimes tip the junior £5 if she/he does a nice job washing my hair.

uptoongirl · 29/11/2021 14:28

Depends, if someone has done a great job with my hair and listened to what I wanted I will tip. If it's just ok and I don't think I'll go back there I don't. I rarely go back to the same salon more than once as I've never found a hairdresser who I love.

I do hate the whole tipping thing just because it's so awkward, especially now all the salons seem to have taken away tip jars and the person checking me out often isn't the person who did anything to my hair so I would have to give them the tip to pass on.

Kippersfortea · 29/11/2021 14:32

Yes 10% or so

bendmeoverbackwards · 29/11/2021 14:34

No.

I hate the whole tipping culture. I wish they’d just up their prices a bit to include tips so we know where we are.

Kippersfortea · 29/11/2021 14:35

I plan to tip everyone at least 10% and would include that in the price so if eg. The cost was £150 I wouldn't do it unless I was happy to pay £165 for things like beautician, hairdresser, hotel, bar, restaurant, etc. I don't do it in chains like Costa or at the till in Tesco or on the bus, but I always tip at the independent coffee house, the fruit and veg market, and the taxi driver.

Kippersfortea · 29/11/2021 14:35

Well not ALWAYS sometimes they get more and sometimes I complain 😂

idontlikealdi · 29/11/2021 14:37

Nope. I pay enough already.
