Do you think this Brora skirt is worth the money?

I do love it and have been searching for something similar for a long time. But the price....
I'm laughing at the reduction to be honest, like it makes a difference!

I know it is wool, lined, etc, and I like the slightly unique cut and hem. Have searched ebay for months for something similar but the vintage ones look a bit tired.

It is expensive, and on the one hand i don't support cheap throwaway clothes. But on the other hand a lot of higher end brands aren't up to scratch either.
Has anyone purchased skirts from Brora? And does the price justify itself?

Personally absolutely not.
I would consider 100 top end of acceptable for something like that assuming I loved it.

beatrixpotterspencil · 27/11/2021 14:41

it is so difficult to source decent fabrics, it's like polyester/acrylic is everywhere, even at higher end. But the leap in price for wool is disturbing, even though i want to support it.

I do wonder if this is what a good skirt would cost now, if fast fashion hadn't messed up our ideas of pricing. or are these brands milking the section of the market who want something better?

Alternatively, these two vintage skirts on ebay are 100% wool, fully lined and both under £20 - but 'used' of course.

I think if you love it and can afford it you should buy it and see what its like on. Then decide.

KirstenBlest · 27/11/2021 14:51

get the 2nd e-bay one.

I have a lovely brand new pure wool kilt - got it in a charity shop for £2

mrssmiling · 27/11/2021 14:53

Ouch. Have you looked at House of Bruar? Cheaper, decent quality…might be worth a look.

beatrixpotterspencil · 27/11/2021 14:55

house of bruar have some nice ones but always too long so would have to be altered, they also rarely do a size 8 :(

did get a great wool coat from them via ebay last year though!

I have 2 pairs of Brora tweed trousers and a tweed pinafore, the oldest pair of trousers are 15 years old, classic design every year. I wear them when it’s properly cold and love them. They were expensive just like your skirt. They still look like new, I hang them carefully and sponge clean any marks.

I do like Brora but annoyingly they have a delivery charge, sometimes John Lewis sell their stuff and without the delivery charge. I think the Brora sale is in January if you want to risk it. I don’t think the eBay skirts compare. Hope that helps.

mrssmiling · 27/11/2021 15:02

Possibly not the colour you want, but this has an interesting cut, and is much cheaper!

Also, this isn’t tweed…but if you like a vintage checked look it’s a bargain!
I’m thinking about it for Christmas.

Joe Browns ones nice, wrong colours though! thanks:)

Ive seen a few i would be willing to buy from house of bruar but annoyingly out of stock in my size.

This is a skirt that will age with you. If you can afford it buy it. It will be one of those items that in 10 years time you’ll think what good value it was.

givethatbabyaname · 27/11/2021 15:19

I like how this skirt hugs the hips. It’s the cut. Much more stylish than a regular kilt. I think the tartan is a red herring, personally.

That’s a lot of money for a skirt, but if you’re going to wear it every winter for 15 years you might not mind spending that much. It’ll always be an expensive item. The question is whether you’ll end up regretting the money.

lunarlandscape · 27/11/2021 15:22

Wow. I would definitely buy the second vintage Ebay skirt instead. It is a very similar cut - A-line on the bias, which is difficult to find, and a similar colour way. But if you adore the Brora one get it. It's a fairly classic piece so you could be wearing it for years. And IMO it's better to spend £££ ona few classic pieces you adore and wear non stop than cheap ones. I bought some cashmere jumpers for about £200 each about 10 years ago. They are as good as new and I wear them all winter every winter, so they work out far better value than the cheap fashion jumpers I have bought that are never quite right and don't wash well.

beatrixpotterspencil · 27/11/2021 15:26

The cut and check pattern would be loved for many years, true. Just not sure about how bright the colour is. I would perhaps prefer it more muted. I think this might put me off paying so much.

Maybe if it was more navy/grey instead of the bright blue parts.

Brora is always really good quality. How long have you been lusting after it? I always think that if you keep coming back to the same thing over and over, it's probably a sign that it'll be a good investment.
If it helps, wool prices (raw material) are genuinely through the roof at the moment, they've never been higher (I'm Buying Director at a country clothing brand) and the skirt is made in England. You'd be supporting British jobs on both the weaving of the cloth and the manufacture of the skirt, which should make you feel good too!

beatrixpotterspencil · 27/11/2021 15:30

Another pic of the ebay skirt (it is vintage Hobbs), the side seam seems a bit odd...

10% off Brora at the moment which is v rare.

I'm sure you'd be paying a bit extra for the Brora label but, according to your link, that skirt was made in the UK and the fabric was woven in the UK, hence the price. Joe Browns doesn't compare.

If you don't want to take a chance on second hand and you live anywhere near a 'naice' town then you might enjoy a trip to a country clothing shop. I find they sometimes have tweed by less prestigious labels, still not cheap but a bit more affordable.

Are you a primary school teacher that does the piano in assemblies? If so then that would be an ideal skirt

rrhuth · 27/11/2021 15:47

Aboslutely not worth £242, no.

The secondhand ones are fine and you will have about £200 to spend on something else!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 27/11/2021 15:52

The Brora skirt is by far the best. It will last years as neither the cut or colour are overtly “now” fashionable. I’d buy it if it was in stock in my size, very much an investment piece. If you love it, but it. Anything else will be a false economy, and will remind you if the skirt you didn’t buy every time you wear it. (I’m a civil engineer who can’t play any instruments!)

I like the 2nd Ebay one.

Don't like the frayed look of the hem on the Brora one.

You know, i do think it is in fashion, a lot of recent brora stuff strikes me as fairly trend focused. Lots of wide, chunky alpaca stuff, long floaty frocks.. I think bright checks are definitely a thing right now, but it's true that the cut is fairly off trend.

To me the ebay one looks bulky, i really like the waist on the brora skirt, im just not convinced by the colours.

lunarlandscape · 27/11/2021 16:02

It's quite classic in a tartan to have a single strand of bright colour lifting the muted colours. I think the background colour is gorgeous.
