Do you think this Brora skirt is worth the money?

I do love it and have been searching for something similar for a long time. But the price....
I'm laughing at the reduction to be honest, like it makes a difference!

I know it is wool, lined, etc, and I like the slightly unique cut and hem. Have searched ebay for months for something similar but the vintage ones look a bit tired.

It is expensive, and on the one hand i don't support cheap throwaway clothes. But on the other hand a lot of higher end brands aren't up to scratch either.
Has anyone purchased skirts from Brora? And does the price justify itself?

I know it's part of the design ( probably?) but the mismatching of lines in the tartan would bother me, and I also don't think that, for that reason, it would stand the test of time as a classic piece.
It'd be a no from me.

CarrieMoonbeams · 27/11/2021 16:09

I've got this in the other colourway, it's absolutely gorgeous. I've only tried it on as it's my Christmas present from DH, but it hangs beautifully and I love it.

pickingdaisies · 27/11/2021 16:12

It's a beautiful skirt, but ouch! If you can afford it and justify it though, go for it.
It crossed my mind that maybe you can buy fabric and get one made for you if you can find a good dressmaker.

pickingdaisies · 27/11/2021 16:13

Hell, now I'm being taunted with brora adverts for fabulous skirts that I can't justify buyingAngry

LiterallyKnowsBest · 27/11/2021 16:17

Surprised to see something from Joe Brown, and only 12% wool, being offered as a comparator.

OP I have a particular love for Margiela tweed skirts - their cut and fabric sing to me, consistently, every year. And every year I wait patiently in the sales until one occasionally reaches a price I feel meets my latterly somewhat downgraded lifestyle. So, I’m probably more sympathetic than most to your dilemma.

The fabric seems unusual and they’ve made some effort with design. It wouldn’t suit me (colours too muted!) - but if it’s just what you crave then I’d say it’s … almost worth it. I’d be inclined to wait for a bigger reduction - but I don’t know the rhythms of Brora reductions …

I don’t do EBay but can spend happy hours on Vestiaire Collective, (though their policies are nerve wracking). Maybe have a look there for comparison.

I've been a bit disappointed with Brora recently. I'm currently sitting wearing a Brora cashmere wrap cardigan that was pretty expensive, and developed holes soon after I got it. Last 2 were the same.
I ordered a sweater from House of Bruar a couple of weeks ago, and had to send it back because it was so thin that it was see through.
I don't know where the quality has gone!
I wouldn't buy the Brora one because I dislike the unfinished hem.
Sorry I don't know the answer :(

Howareyouflower · 27/11/2021 16:18

I think the point is that the skirt is Tweed....even a Tweed scarf is expensive. I actually prefer the second used one you have found.

I thought the same last time I went to a Brora. The quality was flimsy. Very high street fast fashion.
Charliesgotachocolatefactory · 27/11/2021 16:22

I couldn’t live with the diagonal seam running across the front and breaking the pattern. But that’s just me.

I’ve no issue with the price if you can afford it as the quality will be excellent - we deserve a treat every now and then. I lust after Brora knitwear and one day I am going to buy one.

LowlandLucky · 27/11/2021 16:24

Buy the Brora one, you will love it for life, the other 2 will feel like you have settled for something that isn't quite right.

beatrixpotterspencil · 27/11/2021 16:27

Ah, i was wondering if they had joined the depressing quality drop crowd. It wouldnt surprise me these days at all. Everything is going down the pan.

I actually like the diagonal thing, it lifts the design a bit.

Nice to hear! Do you mind if i ask how tall you are and how you feel about the fit?

Also, the quality?

@Starryskiesinthesky

I think if you love it and can afford it you should buy it and see what its like on. Then decide.
This. You love it. You've been searching for something similar for ages. If you don't buy it you'll always be wondering what if. If you hate it then send it back. At least you got to try it.

I thought this too. And I don’t like the way the material flared out from that seam. I would prefer a straight bias cut, if that makes sense. This is like “a skirt cut on the bias with a twist” and I don’t like twists.

The first eBay skirt looks like something the Queen would wear for a bracing walk at Balmoral! Go for the second one or the Brora itself.

misscockerspaniel · 27/11/2021 16:44

It is on the John Lewis website. I would be tempted to wait for their Christmas sale (unless you were hoping to wear it at Christmas).

If you love it and you can afford it then it’s worth it. Too many times I’ve tried to get a cheaper alternative and ended up spending more trying several versions.
A wool skirt won’t need washing too often and should stay looking good for years.
It’s expensive because it’s not made in a sweatshop.

Insertdeadcatsnamehere · 27/11/2021 17:15

I'd buy the 2nd ebay one before someone else does and see if you can scratch the itch for £20 first. You could always resell if you don't like it and the expensive one should still be there if it turns out that nothing else will do!

NotMeNoNo · 27/11/2021 18:35

I sort of think it's worth more than a high street skirt but Brora is really expensive and it would have to be perfect style and colour that you will keep for ever.
Good quality tartan or Harris tweed could be £40 a metre - that's maybe £80 in materials then some hours of somebodies time and overheads- I can see a UK made good quality, short run item being upward of £150.
There are various etsy sellers who make up skirts in Harris Tweed IIRC.
Also some edgy interpretations of kilt here scottesque.co.uk/product/wrap-pointy-midi-skirt/
