Do you think this Brora skirt is worth the money?

I do love it and have been searching for something similar for a long time. But the price....
I'm laughing at the reduction to be honest, like it makes a difference!

I know it is wool, lined, etc, and I like the slightly unique cut and hem. Have searched ebay for months for something similar but the vintage ones look a bit tired.

It is expensive, and on the one hand i don't support cheap throwaway clothes. But on the other hand a lot of higher end brands aren't up to scratch either.
Has anyone purchased skirts from Brora? And does the price justify itself?

I absolutely love the Brora skirt. The fabric is wonderful and the cut just a bit more interesting and very flattering. I would go for it, with the view that it is better to buy something perfect and wear it and wear it, than to buy five or six cheaper things that are never just right. I would rather have better and less. (But I am always a shameful spendthrift...).

ArabeI · 27/11/2021 18:45

Yes, if you can afford it and like it enough. I also think those vintage skirts are probably nice, also.

I haven't bought a Brora skirt for ages (I have a couple of cardigans and have my eye on a mohair cardigan at the moment). I had a lovely brown wool petticoat-style skirt and that was lovely quality and fit. Though I eventually managed to shrink and ruin it in the wash.

I love that skirt. But I just bought a beautiful wrap skirt from wild status on Etsy. Hand made in Scotland. She does Aline tartan wrap skirts in poly viscose, but she also does custom orders, so it might be worth getting in touch with her, if you want wool. Much cheaper.

Viviennemary · 27/11/2021 18:59

I think if you can afford it then buy it. Especially if you have been looking for an alternative without success. Its a fairly classic style.

My issue currently is Brora sizing.

They say a size 8 has a 28inch waist. This type of skirt would look dreadful if it was too large.

For a skirt that is only 65% wool - ridiculous price!!

@Branleuse

Are you a primary school teacher that does the piano in assemblies? If so then that would be an ideal skirt
😂😂😂
beatrixpotterspencil · 27/11/2021 19:09

considering the colour bothering me a bit and the sizing, i think i shall look for something else.
thanks very much for your opinions, everyone.

Regarding the piano teacher comment (i do have a sense of humour...)

I do wonder how many of us would giggle and smirk if she'd suggested a certain item looked like it would "suit someone from a council state who works at Greggs".

Which i assume might be more her cup of tea Grin

council estate!

although our local council certainly is in a state....

@Floisme

I do wonder if this is what a good skirt would cost now, if fast fashion hadn't messed up our ideas of pricing. or are these brands milking the section of the market who want something better? I'm sure you'd be paying a bit extra for the Brora label but, according to your link, that skirt was made in the UK and the fabric was woven in the UK, hence the price. Joe Browns doesn't compare.

If you don't want to take a chance on second hand and you live anywhere near a 'naice' town then you might enjoy a trip to a country clothing shop. I find they sometimes have tweed by less prestigious labels, still not cheap but a bit more affordable.

I was just going to say that Floisme . The Brora skirt will have been made in the UK. It absolutely doesn't compare with the Joe Brown one.

It's worth paying more to know it was made in conditions that comply with UK (or EU) employment and health and safety regulations.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 27/11/2021 20:41

I absolutely agree @Floisme and @KimikosNightmare, I think we have list right of how much good clothes should cost. I am old enough (50s) to remember new clothes being a treat and a bit of an investment which lasted a few years, not something you threw in the trolley with the groceries and kept for a few months. Even in my teens, even in H&M, Topshop etc fashion was much slower.

It might be worth re -visiting in the sale? Starts at early January and most things are reduced eventually. The only things they don't sell off are the the ' classic' cashmere collection pieces and the odd thing from that season's collection which has been unusually popular.
Brora's tailoring - jackets/ skirts/ trousers- is very good and everything is beautifully finished. So: a good sale investment!

LaurieFairyCake · 27/11/2021 21:40

I know you've decided against it but I LOVE the Brora one

I have masses from them, all bought in the sale - usually starts 2nd week of January I think so you might be lucky Smile

TheBabyBoo · 27/11/2021 22:06

Hmm. Ten or fifteen years ago, maybe. But Brora quality isn’t what it was.
