Where on the high street are you buying your New Year’s Eve ballgown?!

John Lewis doesn’t stock full length evening dresses
My local Monsoons have closed
Debenhams has closed
House of Fraser has closed
TK maxx had no dresses in stock (used to have a whole rail full of options)

I’m close to three large cities and not a single shop sells full length evening dresses.

I don’t want to buy online!

It’s such a shame.

eBay?? What size are you?? I have 3 in my wardrobe gathering dust...!!!

EvilRingahBitch · 26/11/2021 19:02

I had to double check that this was S&B not AIBU.

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 26/11/2021 19:02

Lol. She just doesn’t want to buy anything online.

Because you can’t try it on and see if it fits / suits you. Is that unreasonable?

OP more fool you for asking this in the style and beauty section. Confused

Hoolahupsaresquare · 26/11/2021 19:09

I don’t know but can I come too ?

MeredithGreyishblue · 26/11/2021 19:15

Why so snippy?
Have you a wedding dress shop nearby? They do occasion wear sometimes

Giggorata · 26/11/2021 19:15

Oxfam?

Lostmyheart101 · 26/11/2021 19:16

Just an opportunity to possibly need one would be nice.

Yes but high street shops aren’t going to stock ‘ball gowns’. They take up shedloads of space and aren’t going to justify the space with the price.

Online is the way forward. Much better trying stuff on at home than in a grotty changing room.

Darkpheonix · 26/11/2021 19:17

The 2 times I have been at a ball i have used selfridges personal shopping service.

Makes it so much easier.

LittleBearPad · 26/11/2021 19:18

And of course you can try it on. The distance selling regulations give you a better shout of getting your money back too and not an irritating credit note

ISpyCobraKai · 26/11/2021 19:22

Oh come on, yes there's snippy responses but if you've used MN for even a couple of months, you'd know they would happen.
Also, the assumption that NYE ballgowns are a thing?

Either the OP is taking the piss or doesn't know her audience.
People on here are v helpful generally, and it's nothing to do with needing a ballgown and all about the phrasing and that's very clear.

EvilRingahBitch · 26/11/2021 19:23

I realise that my opinion is biased because I'm a Londoner but the sheer faff of going backwards and forwards to the post office with ball dresses for weeks on end would do my head in. Bridesmaid section of wedding dress shops is worth a try.

Darkpheonix · 26/11/2021 19:26

I wouldn't order on the internet either. Purley because returns at our village is a nightmare.

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 26/11/2021 19:28

That’s great that random old you would prefer to order and pay for a load of stuff online and then haul ass back and forth to the PO to return it all, @LittleBearPad.

The OP would prefer to go into a shop and try stuff on and then buy what she likes.

Is that OK with you?

Darkpheonix · 26/11/2021 19:30

To be fair I did find the title amusing. It did give the sense that ballgown are a hugely popular requirement for NYE.

But maybe they are for some people. Some people may go to a ball every year. I don't think it's a mainstream thing. Hence why there aren't tons available at the drop of a hat.

OhMyCrump · 26/11/2021 19:31

Please tell us where you're going OP. I'd love to be going somewhere I'd need a ball gown.
I might get one just for sitting on my sofa watching jools Holland, drinking prosecco for one!

covetingthepreciousthings · 26/11/2021 19:33

Have you thought about renting one?

Helenluvsrob · 26/11/2021 19:33

Honestly ? Oxfam on line ?

Eldest got a brilliant prom dress in a charity shop. No one had the same.

covetingthepreciousthings · 26/11/2021 19:35

This rental website even has a NYE section.

MiniTheMinx · 26/11/2021 19:36

If you are anywhere near London, then Finsbury Park, lots of shops to choose from.

LynetteScavo · 26/11/2021 19:40

One trip to the post office and you’re done, possibly two if needed. Not sure that’s more faff than traipsing up and down a high street where there are apparently no options?

Is that ok with you dear?

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 26/11/2021 19:42

So off you go and do your online shopping to your heart’s content. No-one’s stopping you.

Oh, nearly forgot the ‘dear’.

BusySittingDown · 26/11/2021 19:51

God, MN is so bitchy sometimes! Lots of hotels do Gala nights on NYE, where the dress code is black tie so many people wear long gowns. I've never been to one personally but people do!

OP, are you near a Selfridges? The one in the Trafford Centre has ballgowns, I think. Although online might be the best bet unfortunately. Otherwise, bridal shop.
