I just can't stand anything in any shop

I decided to spend some money, haven't shopped for new clothes for a few years (apart from the occasional replacement), so luckily i have the choice and the cash to pick and choose at the moment.

But it is dire out there. I just don't get it. Physical stores are a clusterfuck of thin, creased shite (H&M, Next, etc) with 'knitwear' that looks like it is made out of some shabby, crushed up webbing - i am presuming it is the sheer amount of elastane mixed in with poor quality acrylic and stretched up polyester.....they look and feel allergy inducing. Who is buying this shit and why?

But the real issue is higher end stores - Brora, White Co, Toast, and so on - i used to like these and purchase from them but now it seems everything is overly trend focused and either whoppingly huge or cropped to oblivion (no proper basics to speak of, just odd shapes and stuff that will date very, very quickly at £200 a pop!)
And don't get me started on sleeve length. Unless the arm is described as cropped then even long limbed models have cuffs trailing a foot longer than their hands! (yes Cos i am looking at you!)

I just wanted a loose fit, luxurious cashmere jumper or cardi that was fluid over the hips, not with a standard fitted hem. I think the shapes of a hem really help to update a garment but the 'quality' shops are still only selling stolid shapes that are a bit office-wear 2003.

So here i am with the money and freedom to choose but.. nothing! I cant find one damn store apart from Poetry that has interestingly created knits, and they never have what i want in stock for months ahead. It is depressing. I needed a handful of new jumpers and a couple of skirts/tops. Haven't managed to find a single one that isnt badly made, ludicrously long or insanely patterned (cottage core can step the fuck back a bit ok)....

The entire market is flooded with overly trend focused crap. No brand is safe from it, i cant even just find a simple cardi in a good wool that drapes well and ISN'T 4 feet wide.

WeirdArchitecture · 26/11/2021 13:05

And please, for the love of all things holy, don't recommend uniqlo!
I have honestly never seen such horribly designed, cardboard cut out crap.

Relax and look at Woolovers
www.woolovers.com/womens/pure-cashmere
They can be a wee bit boring and safe but they have the basics covered.

I am sorry OP, I am no help, but I just wanted to let you know I hear your every word to the very core of my being.

WeirdArchitecture · 26/11/2021 13:31

Some lovely stuff there, i like fluid, slightly drapey cashmere, but pushing £300 is probably going too far for me ....

I'm fed up of seeing cropped jumpers and hoodies... I'm like ooh nice cost hoodie .. oh wait that isn't covering my belly button 🤣🤣

Ohsugarhoneyicetea · 26/11/2021 13:54

But it does fit big, I'm a 12/14 and the small is perfect

Minceandonions · 26/11/2021 13:56

Agreed. I keep seeing lovely dresses, trying on a size 8 (I'm a size 10), and I look like I'm wearing a marquee. Why is everything so hideously oversized!

KirstenBlest · 26/11/2021 13:58

@Ionlydomassiveones, everything I've had from Uniqlo has been good quality, fitted well, washed well. The t-shirts and hoodies were particularly good as is my merino knitwear

The only comment I would have is that sleeve and inside leg were not long on me and I'm UK average height and not leggy, so on a normal person they might be short.

WeirdArchitecture · 26/11/2021 13:59

I like white co, and have a few decent things from there, but this year's offerings are all black sparkles or cuts for very tall women. I am average height.

As far as vic beckham is concerned, i don't think the look suits anyone. I am fairly skinny and too-long sleeves make me look like a Dickensian urchin. I am sick of pondering whether to get things altered just to rectify stupid, stuuupid design flaws.

And if it is all just in the nature of fashion and fun, why the fuck dont they add ridiculous, unwearable features to men's clothing?

It is so they will date quickly and get re-purchased at a fast rate.

Could not agree more about Uniqlo. I even went into the shop on Regent Street recently (only looked online previously) and it was like a warehouse. Awful. Dull. Uninspiring.

LKS832xc567 · 26/11/2021 14:06

(Uniqlo seem to advertise heavily on this site so I’m a bit suspicious about all the flattery it gets..)

WeirdArchitecture · 26/11/2021 14:11

I loathe uniqlo, never purchased anything for years as everything was stiff, thin and badly fitting. I dont get the hype at all. Nothing can be that cheap without a catch.

OP posts:
KirstenBlest · 26/11/2021 14:14

I'll admit that my most recent trip to Uniqlo was disappointing. It was in late September. I was after something not black, navy or grey and left empty-handed

WeirdArchitecture · 26/11/2021 14:15

And Toast!
I had my eye on the neat fitting cashmere for months. No model photo's of it being worn anywhere online (typical Toast arrogance). They want you to part with £145 and not see it on a model or even offer garment measurements.

I was just about to purchase it when i came across a photo of it on pinterest. The arms are ludicrous, and it doesnt look all that great on.
Here is the photo:

I normally love their stuff, but why do they send me an e-mail at least once a day?

Floisme · 26/11/2021 14:19

I rate John Smedley for knitwear although I've never paid full price.

If you're happy to buy second hand, I've seen a few recommendations on here for The Nearly New Cashmere Company.

I think you get what you pay for with Uniqlo. When it works, it's great but it's unpredictable. A couple of times I've been really pleased with something so bought a second one, which has turned out to be total shit.
