‘Theatre Glam’. What?

VenusClapTrap · 26/11/2021 11:06

I’ve been invited to a ‘West End Musical Brunch’ on Sunday, for a friend’s 50th, and been told the dress code is ‘theatre glam’. I’ve already been confused by thinking brunch meant, well, brunch - a breakfast/lunch hybrid, only for it to turn out it means a burger at lunchtime. So a lunch then.

But that’s by-the-by; now I’m concerned I might be misunderstanding the dress code and get that wrong too. So can anyone enlighten me as to what theatre glam means?

Oh so like, over the top. A bit Liza Minnelli in Carberet. Is it at the Phoenix Arts Club?

Kippersfortea · 26/11/2021 11:19

Velvet, sequins, glitter, pizzazz

Old Hollywood movie star glamor is what I would go for. Not too revealing, but lux fabrics, big hair, sparkly accessories and dramatic dye make up maybe some falsies.

3luckystars · 26/11/2021 11:20

Dress as normal and bring a feather boa in you bag.

Kippersfortea · 26/11/2021 11:21

Eye makeup not dye makeup sorry.

Theatre glam seems like an evening thing though, surely nobody wants to be dressed for the theatre at 11am? Idk

To be truly theatrically contemporary you’d be attending via Zoom …

VenusClapTrap · 26/11/2021 12:24

Well this is what’s throwing me. We will be arriving at 11.30am. I’m not sure I can do sequins and feather boas at that time!

I like the idea of old Hollywood glamour. I might be able to do something along those lines. I’m crap at hair and make up though.

I don’t know actually. I’ve just been told we are meeting at a particular tube station.

See if you can find out the venue OP and I’ll tell you what ‘theatre glam’ is going to fly there. I’ve been to a few of these Grin

Is a West end musical brunch eating and then going to the theatre to see a west end musical? If so, I'd say 'theatre glam' means the dressed up end of what peoole would wear to go to the theatre in the afternoon, as everyone intends making a bit of an effort for it. Id certainly check with the host before going all feather boa and glitz.

ShirleyPhallus · 26/11/2021 14:12

Just wanna let you know that the West End Musical brunch is one of the worst experiences I ever went to, they underpoured the Prosecco then all fucked off 10 mins before the end of the free Prosecco time; the food was awful (“brunch” was a cold burger and undercooked fries); they had so many complaints and the guy running it just left Grin

So you could coat yourself head to toe in cow dung and still be in better shape than the event.

Enjoy!!

Is it this one?

£65! Blimey

VenusClapTrap · 26/11/2021 22:23

Oh dear. Yes. That’s the one. I must admit I was a bit disappointed by the limited meal choice - cheeseburger or vegan burger. But the person who has organised it all says the reviews are good. I hope for the sake of the birthday girl that it isn’t as bad as you say! 😬

Oh hells teeth - have you read the reviews yourself? Apparently, there is only one hour of unlimited prosecco so plan to spend serious amounts at the bar. Recent Trip Advisor reviews suggest these events are currently being held at Salsa Temple. Here's a link but be aware that not all the reviews are for the brunch event.

I'm sorry to be all doom and gloom but as you say, it is for someone's birthday - a special celebration so it's probably best that expectations are realistic.

The dress code to this is "Theatre glam or smart casual" so I wouldn't overthink it...just wear something a bit brighter and sparkly like you would for an Xmas party.

VenusClapTrap · 27/11/2021 18:40

Doesn’t look good does it? But I wasn’t involved in booking it; I just got invited along. I hope for the sake of the friend who chose it, as well as the birthday girl, that it’s not too awful. They’ve both had a really bad couple of years getting made redundant by Covid amongst other things, so they both really deserve a lovely day out. I’ll get a big round in when the free stuff runs out. Sad

I still don’t know what to wear 🤦‍♀️

Have you got a velvet jacked or something?

Sooverthemill · 27/11/2021 20:11

I think it just means dress up a bit. LBD with a tux jacket, slinky velvet trousers etc

waltzingparrot · 27/11/2021 21:39

Deep red velvet - like the theatre seats and safety curtain.
