How is this wave achieved?!

I’ve styled my hair with straighteners before to get a ‘wavy’ look but I’ve always wanted to achieve this look, it’s like one big wave? I don’t know if it would be achievable with my hair as mine isn’t as long at the front & sides?

Oh wow I'd love to know this too. That is so beautiful. I currently curl my hair with GHD straighteners then really brush it out. I've tried tongs or wand but the curl doesn't stay. I would like more of a wave like the photo you posted rather than the curls I've got.

The OP photo reminds me of mine when i straighten it. Im very wavy, some curl, and if i blowdry straight it often leaves a few bends in that settle that way.

The woman in the image possibly has some natural bend to her otherwise straight hair, but it seems she has twisted the sides into a spiral with some sort of heat (hot brush or straighteners).

nanbread · 25/11/2021 13:12

I would say they've done it with a really big barrel wand

guessagain · 25/11/2021 13:43

imstilljenny2 - what lovely hair you have! I used to have longer hair like yourself, but I stupidly hacked into it, trying to cut a side fringe & cut most of the length off around the sides & severely regret it!

I’d say when I blow dry mine it can have a slight wave or kink, but I couldn’t leave it as that as it would be more James May, so it needs a heat tool, whether that be straighteners or curling tool.

The style/wave does have a look of when you’ve tied your hair back for most of the day & just taken your hair band out, and you have that kink, although mine would never look that perfect!

I wonder if they have waved it slightly then gone over again with the straighteners?

Possibly just a hair dryer and a barrel brush? I achieved something similar using the air wrap recently but not as perfect as the photo! I have seen videos recently where people curl using straighteners then straighten the ends. You’d have to be very good to get every curl to line up perfectly though.

Yeah and held the ends out
Mizydoscape · 25/11/2021 17:06

My stylist did something similar with straighteners the other day. It looked like she used them to curl but didn't twist the straightener as many times as you would to get a curl iyswim. Brushed through it dropped more.

This is how my hairdresser styled my hair last time and she used straighteners. I absolutely loved it. Naturally, I’ve never managed to recreate the look as I’m useless with hair.

whatisthisinhere · 25/11/2021 17:17

I'm following this thread, as although I have wavy hair, it's hard to achieve a uniform look.
@Mizydoscape is that you in the pic? Your hair is beautiful! Can I sk what colour you've had done? I'm thinking of having a change and that is close to the colour I'd like to achieve

mewkins · 25/11/2021 17:33

I think this could be done with wider straighteners. Straighten from the root then kind of bend it half way down but don't wind the hair round the barrel. I imagine it is easier to do on someone else's hair.

Mizydoscape · 25/11/2021 18:04

@whatisthisinhere yes it was previously a blonde balayage base. She did a dark red shadow root with brighter red over the mids and ends. The brighter red will fade super quick though because of the blonde. I think she uses Redken shades but I didn't see a colour chart before, sorry!

hobbyiscodefordogging · 25/11/2021 18:36

This is how my hair goes when I wave it with straighteners. Trying to think through what I do...

Hold the straighteners vertical to my head; clamp them onto a section of hair and slide to a few inches down; turn the straighteners 360 degrees so hair is wrapped once and hold for a few moments then release. I don't do the full-on technique that is like using scissors to curl ribbon, you want to leave the ends out.

IDontThinkSoNo · 25/11/2021 18:46

I also make mine look like that with straighteners, I think it’s just a matter of trial and error and practice

guessagain · 25/11/2021 18:50

Mizydoscape - your hair is looks amazing, I’d love to be a bit braver and go for a bolder colour like that, I just don’t think it would suit me. I’m not so young anymore & I have a face like a busted packet of biscuits! I am going to have a practice with the straighteners this weekend and see what I can do!

I use a babyliss big hair then sleep with it in a bun at the very top of my head.

Blowdry my hair til 80% upside down. Massive sections with the Big Hair. Usually part around the ears, four on the bottom and three on the top.

Then flip hair upside down but dont smooth it down i.e the hair should fall over your ears. Then I twist it and wrap it around itself a couple of times and secure it with a big metal clip (I use one of DDs Jojo bows) almost near your forehead.

It's important not to smooth it down into the bun or else it'll be kinky, you want the bun tight but the hair going into the bun loose.

In the morning it'll be like one or two big curls and it usually drops within an hour.

It's not curly or straight but somewhere in the middle.

prayingforrainbows · 26/11/2021 08:59

My hairdresser always manages to get my hair somewhat like this style too!
She uses GHD platinum+ straighteners to do it, I have the OG GHDs but regardless of what I do I usually end up with a more pronounced wave/curl.
I've tried on many attempts to replicate but I can never do it properly 😂

My hairdresser gives me that wave.

You use straighteners, put the hair in the missile, clamp and bend them around and hold - so you crease the hair when it's released.

actiongirl1978 · 26/11/2021 09:01

Middle. Not missile.

Kippersfortea · 26/11/2021 09:05

Could be a big barrel wand or tong, but that's how mine goes with straightener waves

WeAreTheHeroes · 26/11/2021 09:11

My hairdresser's Instagram is full of photos and videos of hair waved like this. They use straighteners but don't wrap the hair all the way round.

DontTellThemYourNamePike · 26/11/2021 09:22

🤣🤣 That has really tickled me!

I bet you don't though.
