Long evening dress and silver trainers?

I have a do to go to, dress code "best glitz and glam".

My prediction is that most men will wear trousers, rather than jeans, and a smart casual open necked shirt, probably shoes not trainers. Women will be done up to the nines.

I've never enjoyed shopping and I have reached a point in life where I won't buy anything just for one or two wears and I won't wear uncomfortable shoes for anyone.

I have an old (practically vintage Grin) bias cut silk long evening dress, shocking pink and silver. It's a good dress, I've been wearing it for every moderately dressy event for the last 15 years and get more compliments in this than anything else I've ever owned.

15 years ago I would have worn it with heels. Lately I've worn it with flat silver sandals but currently after a bit too much running I have approximately 4.5 toenails Grin

So, can I wear it with exceedingly comfortable silver trainers I already own or do I need to try and get some silver (or pink?) closed toe shoes? I'm thinking trainers updates it but I may be kidding myself!

It's a private function, there's no offical dress code for the venue.

What do you think?

Love that idea.

Brogues · 17/11/2021 20:45

I’d say no.

garlictwist · 17/11/2021 20:46

I went to a wedding recently in similar shoes. I can't wear heels because I have bunions (tmi) and I also need proper foot support for other issues.

No one commented and in fact one other lady was wearing them too. I think things are a lot more informal now and why should our feet suffer?

Glassofshloer · 17/11/2021 20:47

No, can’t you buy some closed toe kitten heels? They’re really on point at the moment.

HomeSliceKnowsBest · 17/11/2021 20:47

It'll look fab! Very modern and fresh.

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 17/11/2021 20:47

Love the cool trainer idea. Super cool.

JasperTheHungry · 17/11/2021 20:48

Of course you can. Go and feel fabulous and comfortable.

dudsville · 17/11/2021 20:48

Yes, fabulous idea! Can we see the dress?

becarefulouttheretoday · 17/11/2021 20:50

I love this look but dresses and silver trainers is pure turn of the millenium for me so I see it as more retro than modern. Short of wearing trousers with a skirt over them it's pure 2000.
RockinHorseShit · 17/11/2021 20:51

Of course you can & it will update the dress a bit & make the outfit more current anyway. Enjoy your night in comfort

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 17/11/2021 20:53

becarefulouttheretoday isn't "glitz and glam" retro in itself though... Therefore exactly right!

Yes but I was quoting an OP who said it sounded modern. It doesn't to me.
LividLaVidaLoca · 17/11/2021 20:54

Need a photo Grin

sittingonacornflake · 17/11/2021 20:55

I'll only tell you if you show us the dress (and trainers!)

ineedsun · 17/11/2021 20:57

DMs rather than trainers for me

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 17/11/2021 20:57

I was going to say no but actually I think it’s a yes from me.👍

Spiceup · 17/11/2021 20:58

I can't show you the dress, you might all hate it and then it will be completely ruined Grin

I have a feeling Kate Moss used to team bias cut silk dresses with Adidas Gazelles back in the day. I think it would work as long as the trainers are in good condition and don't look too well loved i.e. scruffy!

dudsville · 17/11/2021 21:00

I would have the same concern op, enjoy your dress and trainer combo!

ApolloandDaphne · 17/11/2021 21:00

I have a friend whose DP is a filmmaker. She regularly goes to glam events at places like Cannes. She is very tall so pairs her long frocks with silver trainers. She always looks amazing.

Spiceup · 17/11/2021 21:01

The trainer are practically new, unlike the dress!

Gonegrey31 · 17/11/2021 21:02

Of course you can , your outfit sounds fabulous. I was at a mega glam event a few weeks ago and the guest of honour wore a stunning red gown with red and white trainers . She’s in her 70s and outshone every one else !

southlondoner02 · 17/11/2021 21:04

Ooh, could you show us the trainers? I fancy a silver pair

Luredbyapomegranate · 17/11/2021 21:09

YES to the trainers

NO to kitten heels, which have never been on point in the history of humanity, they are naff and always will be. Heels or flats.

thefirstmrsrochester · 17/11/2021 21:10

Sounds lovely. I’d like to see the dress OP, I love pink and silver together.
