If this is my usual style..

what coat or jacket type would you choose?
I always struggle in inclement weather or harsh winter rains.

I look quite a bit like the girl on the left (but older) with very much the same colour and style of hair, build, etc. I tend to dress in this exact silhouette with a more fitted top and loose skirt (sometimes long, sometimes shorter) with boots. These are also my best colours.

So going off this image, and pretending this is meGrin, what style of coat/jacket would you recommend?
I have a long navy wool coat which is lovely but am stuck for other options, especially hoods (a hat might be preferable?). I was previously shoving a wax jacket on in the rain but it is tired and like a sack now.

For info: I don't like extremely trend driven stuff, and my skirts are a bit less voluminous than those in the pic.

That is almost the exact shape and style of DD school uniform. She has a hip length raincoat as part of uniform, but that doesn't keep her skirt dry if very wet.

I'd go for a knee length waterproof coat (I like Seasalts coats but others really dont) and knee high boots. Aim for the same ish shape from the coat and boots, and a skirt length which is slightly shorter than the coat.

And hoods beat hats, as you'll always have the hood with you for unexpected rain.

musicforsmorks · 13/11/2021 15:16

haha, I am too cool for school Grin but I wont be riding my bike like this!

Thanks for the advice, seasalt look nice and warm but im not sure what you mean by 'same shape in coat and boots'? Do you mean a coat with waist definition?
Is that even possible at seasalt?
Most rain wear is either hip length or just below knee and some of my skirts are longer. I don't mind mid thigh so long as it isn't patterned.

I would love a hooded wool coat but cant find any, they must be off trend!

Its a lovely style if it suits you. Tricky to get right though, I see 100s of girls locally who it does nothing for!

My Seasalt coats have an internal toggle which you can cinch the waist in. Worth trying some on maybe. I don't really do waisted styles, but any time I need a coat, that's all I can find.

musicforsmorks · 13/11/2021 15:39

I rarely see anyone in this silhouette - mostly jeans and leisurewear where i live.
It is the only style that seems to suit me, although I am not tall. I need to visit where you live!, but then if they are mostly teens then I would start to wonder if I was weird.....teens here are in either mom jeans or sporty stuff. I need to get out more.

Would something like this work? It has a hood but is a bit fitted, combines wool and extra warmth... but you might not like the combination/collage effect.

Sorry for the link to the French site - you should be able to find it on the UK one, though.

Where do you find your skirts? I've not seen any that shape for years, and I really like that style.

OnyxOryx · 13/11/2021 18:21

I dress like this sometimes. I like funnel neck wool mix coats with one row of buttons centre front, form fitting, with an A-line skirt to it to accommodate the volume in the skirts. I usually buy knee length and it works fine for floor length skirts. The funnel neck can be folded down to make a collar if it's too warm eg spring or a rainy summer day. Or you can stand it up but leave it unbuttoned and add a scarf tucked in for when it's freezing. Woolly bobble hat for autumn or winter with an umbrella if necessary. Beany made from knitted sparkly acrylic (or whatever, it is not wool anyway) or beret for spring. I've no idea if that a style that's in fashion but it seems to look classic and timelessly elegant on me so I stick with it when I'm wearing this type of clothing. Also find it works fine for jeans and a jumper.

Thank you! I like the style of the esprit coat but cant get along with the combo effect, I thought it was layered over a puffer!

I often find the skirts on ebay, in wool - recently found a vintage Hobbs checked wool skirt with pleats. Or else I just wait for stores to pop up with something I like - plumo, Brora, Poetry, or sometimes Hush. Some are stupidly long so I see if I can shorten them. Am looking for velvet pleats at the moment but cant find any.
The photo I posted was from Cabbages and Roses but I don't really get along with how voluminous and floral most of their stuff is.

That sounds like my cup of tea, I would love that in a beige/grey herringbone tweed, or maybe black. Would kill for it to have a hood like the Scottish Widows woman Grin

There are some lovely cashmere berets at Brora right now, expensive though.

Mine was black herringbone. I also had one in blue/brown/cream tweedy type check which was my favourite coat ever, sadly it died of old age along with the black one.

I think a short fitted wool jacket would look best with this style, but I admit that that's not very practical in the rain. Quite like your style; I dress similarly sometimes.

The Dark Angel long hooded wool coat

Daisy62 · 14/11/2021 00:11

full length country-style waterproofs would cover skirts

Prismatic · 14/11/2021 00:48

This coat [[https://www.nygardsanna.se/pub_images/original/210212_grey_a_.jpg?timestamp=1629209033]] might suit?
I returned mine as too large but it's very well made and worth the outlay ( I think!)

ToManderleyAgain · 14/11/2021 01:05

Would the C&R parka work for you? www.cabbagesandroses.com/parka-jacket-in-navy-wax-cotton.html

IamEarthymama · 14/11/2021 01:57

I love these styles. raincoat

Very very expensive though, way out of my budget sadly

IamEarthymama · 14/11/2021 02:00

More affordable

IamEarthymama · 14/11/2021 02:01

Even Better

Monty27 · 14/11/2021 02:33

Waterproof parka?

musicforsmorks · 14/11/2021 13:25

Love the Nygardsanna one, and surprisingly the raincoat from Asos (would be even better if the model would calm down a bit Grin) which is in stock, and does very small sizes!

Most of the others are a touch too voluminous, and although I loved the dark angel ones the thumbnails wouldn't enlarge and no sizing or length info on the page - well, I couldn't find it!

Thank you do very much for your help, I wasn't expecting to find posts on it this afternoon! x

well this is perfect, but it is in Sweden and in SEK. I know this label sell via uk outlets too but can't find any at the mo!

I love that it has a hood!

It really is a beautiful coat @musicforsmorks...I was really disappointed that the 34 was too big. Shipping to uk is about £17 I think... so not exorbitant.

musicforsmorks · 14/11/2021 13:44

I have stupidly small shoulders so struggle with coats, especially the oversized trend - have found sleeker, smaller fit but decent wool coats at Massimo dutti the past few years.

I wouldn't risk import fees for anything that buries a 6 foot model in a size 10 :(

Just rechecked the ASOS raincoat and it is almost touching the floor on the 5'9 model, I am 5'5. Aaaaagh..
