what do leggings mean to you?

Im slim and have decent legs so I suit them, but since living in them through the entire pandemic I am tired, so bloody tired of them.

So I got out my skirts and dresses (I only have a couple) and felt great for a while, much better, more like me, I feel comfier and a touch more put together.

But then they don't go with my rucksack, or many of my coats/jackets. I am finding I need to purchase a few more things to compliment the dress/skirts. I don't mind this, but I hate overthinking it and it can stress me out.
With leggings, I pull them on with a random cashmere slouchy tunic, nice scarf, or some other longish ok top and am ready to go in a jiffy. All of my coats, bags and footwear go with them.

You might say 'well wear both!' but im noticing having to spend more to accommodate my skirt/dress thing and that irritates me. Maybe I do need to make a touch more effort after slowing for so long - I mean, can leggings ever look chic or well thought out, do you think?

Im not into the Sweaty Betty look AT ALL and I don't do the type of fitness that requires leisure wear. Im more drawn to the pared down but sleek, slightly boho with docs or good boots kinda look.

Can you overdo leggings? Do you think they can look smart if in a good fabric? Im happy to be myself but don't want to project permanent slob mode.

They mean I'm at the gym
I don't wear them apart from for a workout

MareofBeasttown · 12/11/2021 16:16

I wear jeggings in nicer fabrics like cord and dark denim. Occ I think of wearing dresses, but then like today, I realise I don't have tights or my tights are laddered. Dresses and skirts require so much thought.

Cissyandflora · 12/11/2021 16:18

They mean I’m fat. And can’t wear anything else.

Helpstopthepain · 12/11/2021 16:19

I don’t think they can ever be smart or chic.

They are for working out.

LolaSmiles · 12/11/2021 16:19

I'm a leggings woman, but feel your pain because I I'm in the same boat.
I like comfy jumpers, leggings and boots with either my wool coat, my down jacket or my biker jacket. It's not the most sophisticated look, but it suits me and I can walk the dogs, go for coffee, play with DC.

Mercurial123 · 12/11/2021 16:20

I wear them for yoga and working out.

otterlybonkers · 12/11/2021 16:21

im fine for tights, have some decent merino ones. I don't find wearing dresses or skirts harder work than leggings, but less of my accessories go with them.

I also don't see leggings as gym clothes, unless they are sporty and shiny. Im more about the Mint Velvet or Poetry look, with boots and a decent wool wrap, etc - a sort of cozy-chic Grin

I think with skirts/dresses, as soon as there's a pattern of any sort it throws everything off. So my blue floral sprig dress might be lovely but it looks odd with my olive Barbour and grey rucksack. Leggings never look odd with anything I wear.

Maybe I need to lose my fear of dresses! The leggings thing is definitely about being easier, not having to think..

I wear them instead of tights with something like a tunic or a mini dress

MareofBeasttown · 12/11/2021 16:23

I struggle with the right shoes/boots for dresses. I am sure if I gave it some thought I would figure it out, but it is easier just to wear jeans and jeggings ( and leggings for the park)

Spiceup · 12/11/2021 16:24

I've never worn leggings other than for running/the gym.To me they're only fit to be worn as hosiery and if that's what I'm doing, I'll wear tights.

I have switched from jeans for everything to more dresses recently though, they are much more comfy.

The thing that makes a real difference is having your colours done. I'm not sure I hold with the "makes your eyes pop" thing, but if you stick with one colour pallet, all your jackets, shoes, bags go with everything in your wardrobe.

MareofBeasttown · 12/11/2021 16:25

Segue, but can anyone recommend some good, warmish, not scratchy and not too expensive tights?

Oh no the last time dresses and leggings were mentioned here it caused a war 😂

MareofBeasttown · 12/11/2021 16:27

Their advertising campaign puts me off a bit, but will try.... I am a size 10-12.

I prefer tights as they dry quicker in the rain, so my legs are less cold if that makes sense.

Havent worn jeans in 7 years. I never liked how they felt or looked so just gave them up eventually after yrs of trying to make them work.

I might give the colour palette thing some more thought. I do tend to stick with black, various green shades and cream these days.

Im ok with boots, shoes, but really struggle to pair dresses/skirts with coats.

Yeah, the advertising is utterly shit, but the tights are amazing
liveforsummer · 12/11/2021 16:29

Sports leggings are for working out, plain black standard leggings are highly functional and I live in them for work with a long line vest and top or tunic top. Smart casual and comfortable. I do try to wear jeans or jeggings the weekend but always look forward to getting back in to my leggings on a Monday 😆

No, not pairing them together - I find it too bulky at the waist and think tights are more comfy.

Im talking about leggings OR dresses/skirts.

To add I have some more interesting ones with zips at the ankles or patches (biker leggings)

Moonface123 · 12/11/2021 16:31

l am tall and slim and wear three quarter length leggings from Amazon, the material is abit thicker, non shiny and they dont go baggy. Look good with boots and most tops l own. l do wear jeans, and casual dresses also.
Just dress how you want to, thats what l do, l know what suits me and what doesnt.

fellrunner85 · 12/11/2021 16:32

To me they mean "can't be arsed to get dressed."

I lived in them during the first lockdown when I wasn't leaving the house and needed something comfy to go with my wfh smart tops.

Since then I've consciously stopped and now either go for the "Sweaty Betty" look or, if I'm not doing anything active, jeans.

jackstini · 12/11/2021 16:33

I have some in a very nice fabric that pull me in and look smart

Mostly though I wear the same boots, jacket, bag I wear with leggings, with opaque tights and dresses. Maybe get some that are maybe more tunic like?

Don't own any skirts - CBA with finding tops to go with them and am only 5'1" so dresses are easier for me

Marygoround22 · 12/11/2021 16:36

I hear you on the dresses issue. I feel so much nicer in a dress, but they don't just go with anything usually. Tights are good, but the length of the dress determines whether I go for over the knee boots or shoes (flat shoes and dresses makes me feel like a clompy old woman so usually wedges, which aren't practical.. ).. minefield..

otterlybonkers · 12/11/2021 16:38

Im always in doc Chelsea boots or the original lace ups. I wear these with everything, especially dresses! Maybe some supergas in summer.

It's the coats!
I do like a long skirt, so it's pain in the arse.
