Hi,

Honestly, I'm feeling really quite low about this now. I seem to have a really awkward shape for dressing and nothing seems to flatter me!

I'm 5ft 8", size 10, high waist, curvy hips, but little bum and thighs and quite broad shoulders- better know as, the inverted triangle and quite frankly, for clothes, it sucks.

I have good legs and a decent figure, but there are only a handful of items that look good on me.

I ordered a load of dresses from Dorothy Perkins, which were actually quite firmly in my comfort zone - I.e, fit and flare/skater, no shoulder pads or puff ball sleeves etc, but they ALL looked shit on me Sad Already packed up, ready to return.

My wardrobe is so dull. Please help! I need everything really. Trousers, casual and going out, skirts, dresses, jackets etc.

Would massively appreciate some of your suggestions! I'm 37 btw, but a youngish one...I think. I would say I look more early 30's, but then maybe dressing for your age is a think of the past anyway 🤷‍♀️

TIA

Agree with PP that you need to look at better quality brands than Dorothy Perkins really. They probably looked shit because they are shit quality and cut - not because of you. Fit and flare is not a good look on women over 25 anyway.

You will look stunning in a dress but you may need to spend a bit more and try new brands/styles to find the right one to showcase your body 👌🏼

[quote Rumcocktailextrarum]Fellow inverted triangle ladies, I think I may have found the WORST dress for us....

Ooooof that dress style made me shudder at the thought 😱

I purchase the Style Me Happy minishop but don’t think it is worth the money. Almost all of it is based on River Island with a bit of Next thrown into the mix. The shapes also don’t seem to be adapted to the body shape. To top everything off, I noticed this company has links for people to buy from Annie’s Closet accessory shop, and this shop sells angora items. Angora items should not be produced or sold.

Following this because I’m the same shape as the OP only perhaps with even less of a waist. I know what suits me, it’s just not bloody fashionable atm. Even a seam round the waist makes me look like a man in drag and wrap dresses that “suit everyone” don’t suit me. I’m slim, I’m fit, I’ve got a six pack fgs but I can’t find clothes that look good on me 😞

Do clothes from Dorothy Perkins usually fit you well? It might not be the style of the dresses but the way they cut them.

I’ve found that certain brands do nothing for me so I just don’t look there any more. Other places I seem to find something that works every time e.g. almost every time I’ve needed something for a wedding, I’ve ended up buying from Reiss, just because their dresses seem to fit me better.

Reiss is a much more upmarket clothes shop than Dorothy Perkins. I always browse at the workwear and occasion wear online. Sadly I do not have the disposable income to spend £200 on one dress.

I shop at lower end high street shops and stick to classics which I hope look acceptable. I worry that any clothes that look 'out there' will completely cheapen my look. For example, I avoid any obvious 'Christmas' outfits.

Sorry, @Lovinglife45, I wasn’t suggesting Reiss was the answer, just that certain brands are cut differently and that was the first example I thought of. I know lots of people are loyal to particular brands because they work better for them.

No need to apologise. I agree that Reiss clothing is of a high quality. I can see this by browsing online.
