I used to wear this stuff when I was 16-21, (which would have been 1990 onwards) we also bought army surplus rucksacks and embroidered into them, usually peace symbols and ban the bomb.. The skirts often had little mirrors on and were very long and swishy!

We wore patchouli oil or sandalwood and due to being in the north we shopped mostly at Afflecks Palace in Manchester. We loved the Stone Roses, The Doors, The Smiths, Velvet Underground, etc. Glastonbury was very different then, no paps or celebs in Hunter wellies all over it.

I also wore those very long tiny necklaces made up of thousands of multicoloured beads. When one snapped, as they invariably would, you could still find random beads near the skirting boards 20 yrs later Grin
We wore the dyed tights and woven bracelets.

Anyway I saw these items on ebay and it was such a blast from the past. It is amazing how the sensorial element of a particular time can crash back in.

And not forgetting the Docs. I still wear those. I still wear long skirts but don't reek of patchouli (prefer Guerlain) and prefer more minimal designs/fabrics and colours nowadays.
We didnt call it 'hippy' but it was classed as alternative, to a point. I mean, we used to hold burning joysticks in nightclubs whilst swaying around dreamily when The Sunday's were playing......

This was my look too. Stripy tights with tasselled knee length skirt and docs.

kennycat · 11/11/2021 19:08

There was a great place called the oasis in brum which was a bit like afflecks palace. Full of all this stuff. I thought I was the bees knees if I’d been there for some random odd earrings and a joss stick or two.

AlbertBridge · 11/11/2021 19:18

I was like this, but a bit more gothy - so my skirts were always black. But mirrors on everything and little silver beads.

I used to love the Cinderella type skirts - I think called handkerchief skirts? - with all the different pointy bits along the hem. I really felt I looked incredible in those. 😆 Did anyone else wear those?

I wasn't allowed to dye my hair so I used food colouring in it. Don't try this.

AlbertBridge · 11/11/2021 19:20

I would've loved Affllecks. Our version was Magpie's Nest in Reading. That was a treasure trove of jingly shit.

MrsMadderRose · 11/11/2021 19:41

Yes I had a purple print skirt with pointy bits all the way round the hem. Each pointy bit had a little bell hanging from it too. I loved it!

I got an Indian block print bedspread from the same shop, and when I lay on my bed it was like camouflage.
This thread is making me think of this song:
Oh loved All About Eve-was this the Totp where they sat there waiting for the music to start? I remember watching with my toes curling!
Pheasantlysurprised · 11/11/2021 20:33

I used to love Harriet WHeeler's hair from The Sunday's.

It was Nomads I think, the brand that did the little mirrors.

QueenOfTheHighCs · 11/11/2021 21:38

Awesome thread! This was me 1989-1992ish. The Velvet Chinese slippers I'd forgotten about. I had the skirts (and bedspread) with little mirrors, the army bags, and the skirt with bells on! I also loved All About Eve, Velvet Underground and The Cure of course! I thought I was the very height of sophistication with my joss sticks, patchouli, dewberry and herbal teas! In Brighton we used to shop in the North Laines - anyone else?

Cheerbear23 · 11/11/2021 22:52

Yes I did when I was 16/17 in 92/93! I would call it New Age.
I’m still partial to a big floaty skirt, DM’s, crushed velvet scarves etc. I fact i still wear woven leather bracelets and silver bangles.
I still have a suede waist coat from ‘94 that I loved in this era… doubt I could even get it on now though!

underneaththeash · 11/11/2021 22:54

Is Afflecks palace still there?

PlayItCool · 11/11/2021 23:01

@Talipesmum

Yes, Afflecks Palace, and the Corn Exchange before the bombing, when it got all done up all fancy and they got rid of all the lovely hippy shops with carved dragons, essential oils and tartan and mirrored skirts. I’m still cross about that.

I bought a deep red velvet long long skirt with little mirrors all over it from Portobello Road marked when I went to London once. I felt sooo sophisticated.

God I miss the Corn Exchange with the creamy wooden floor and smell of incense!
Ozanj · 11/11/2021 23:04

I had a dress that was similar. Loved it but then Mum stole it after only letting me wear it once and then ruined it. It was a really dark brown with gold and brown embroidery

Tailendofsummer · 11/11/2021 23:07

Am saving this thread. I've often struggled to describe to anyone younger now how I used to look - it wasn't goth, though had elements of that, it wasn't grunge or crusty - definitely the vibe that I'm getting from the OP! Also shopped in Fresh Garbage and Cockburn Street. And made some of my own clothes Blush

PlayItCool · 11/11/2021 23:11

*creaky wooden floor not creamy! Grin

RobertaFirmino · 11/11/2021 23:11

This takes me back! Besides Quiggins in Liverpool, there was the Liverpool Palace (a poor Afflecks rip off) and a small shop in the Mathew St area which I think was called Xtreme - that was a bit more metal/goth though.
Besides Lush (who were much better in their shoegaze days before they jumped on the Britpop bandwagon) I remember The Wonder Stuff, Charlatans, Carter USM, Cud, Pop Will Eat Itself and my favourites were The Fall and Wedding Present. Listening to John Peel religiously too.

Tailendofsummer · 11/11/2021 23:14

I think I still have some of my clothes in the attic Smile
So have we come up with a name for it yet? (I do remember being called a freak but I don't think that was meant positively, though I probably took it that way!)

pooiepooie25 · 11/11/2021 23:31

@SallyOMalley

Anyone here from Leeds / West Yorkshire? Remember the Dark Arches with all the little stalls? And the Corn Exchange before it got gentrified!
I was Leeds Uni in the early 90s and remember these so well. Used to also go through to Manchester to see our friends at uni there and go to Afflecks Palace. Nostalgia...
knackeredcat · 11/11/2021 23:33

Fresh Garbage in Belfast! That sure takes me back. I must have got my first things from in there around 1989-90 as a young teenager. I was all about the long black Indian tasselled skirts, jewellery such as ankh earrings, lots of jingly jangly silver toned bangles and those super fine scarves with lurex thread running through them. Usually teamed with a black velvet mirrored bag, docs and a dyed black German army shirt which was more like an oversized duster coat on me as I was only little Grin

Hair was backcombed and crimped, makeup was pale, eyeliner a bit smudgy and the same red lipstick as Robert Smith. Lots of Wella Shock Waves hairspray and a mix of patchouli oil and that Limara with the leather notes. A right little gothy poppet, I was. Trying to be cool and aloof perusing the new age section in Waterstones just wanting some tarot cards. My late Mum didn't exactly approve of the look, and she certainly wouldn't have approved of the tarot cards Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 11/11/2021 23:39

I had some stuff like that but it was from late 70s to mid-80s.

foxgoosefinch · 11/11/2021 23:51

I also wore those very long tiny necklaces made up of thousands of multicoloured beads. When one snapped, as they invariably would, you could still find random beads near the skirting boards 20 yrs later

Love beads! The fashion where I was was to wrap strings of love beads around your arms as bracelets. Loved the 90s ❤️

Pheasantlysurprised · 12/11/2021 00:18

Yes! they were called love beads!

For those who tell how they used to dress with a blush smilie, seriously, was it so embarrassing? I don't think so. I think it had it's own sort of perfection.
I would absolutely love to dress like this again, it is a free spirit, always comfy, and ........

well I remember yrs later I went belly dancing with a friend in Chorlton, manchester. We had a few private lessons (something to do!). The fairly wealthy woman who taught us dressed this way - close cropped hair, bohemian furnishings, the jewellery, etc.. It's become a sort of eccentric thing, it works well slightly toned down on anyone of any age. I have no regrets Grin

stoofadoof · 12/11/2021 05:17

Yes! The thin scarves with lurex threads! I also had a couple of velvet baker boy type caps-my hair was ridiculously greasy and I used to work the 5am cleaning shift at the tech before going in to a level lessons… I couldn’t face getting up early enough to shower, so just used to bundle it all up in to a cap…
Oh PWEI- about the first band I saw at uni in Sheffield 1994 for freshers week-they we’re off their faces and it was hopeless.. still loved them tho. And the wonder stuff, Carter etc
One of my biggest regrets was having tickets for Nirvana when they played Newcastle in 1991, but I couldn’t be bothered getting the bus!

paradyning · 12/11/2021 06:54

Ah my biggest regret was missing the '92 Keele university Kingmaker gig. With Radiohead their support band.

Realitea · 12/11/2021 07:05

I was like this too. People called us ‘jitters’
Star from the Lost boys was the ultimate jitter and the levellers was everyone’s favourite band
