I used to wear this stuff when I was 16-21, (which would have been 1990 onwards) we also bought army surplus rucksacks and embroidered into them, usually peace symbols and ban the bomb.. The skirts often had little mirrors on and were very long and swishy!

We wore patchouli oil or sandalwood and due to being in the north we shopped mostly at Afflecks Palace in Manchester. We loved the Stone Roses, The Doors, The Smiths, Velvet Underground, etc. Glastonbury was very different then, no paps or celebs in Hunter wellies all over it.

I also wore those very long tiny necklaces made up of thousands of multicoloured beads. When one snapped, as they invariably would, you could still find random beads near the skirting boards 20 yrs later Grin
We wore the dyed tights and woven bracelets.

Anyway I saw these items on ebay and it was such a blast from the past. It is amazing how the sensorial element of a particular time can crash back in.

And not forgetting the Docs. I still wear those. I still wear long skirts but don't reek of patchouli (prefer Guerlain) and prefer more minimal designs/fabrics and colours nowadays.
We didnt call it 'hippy' but it was classed as alternative, to a point. I mean, we used to hold burning joysticks in nightclubs whilst swaying around dreamily when The Sunday's were playing......

My hands are craving a mood ring after reading this thread.

'dull brown - you are feeling pensive'

'sludgy brown - you are having deep thoughts'

'greeny brown - you are feeling very sensual'

SallyOMalley · 09/11/2021 18:29

I still get unavoidably drawn towards little wooden boxes inlaid with brass! There is only so much you can store in a 'mini hippy box', as my dbro used to call them Grin

LanaDelBoy · 09/11/2021 18:30

I was desperate to have Miki-from-Lush hair! Unfortunately a pot of crimson Directions did not achieve that look.

TrashyPanda · 09/11/2021 18:30

Oh goodness, this was me and my pals in 70s/80s Scotland.

We’d go to Cockburn Street market and think we were sooooo cool.
And spend hours plaiting each other’s wet hair into hundreds of tiny little plaits (tied with thread) - when they dried you undid them had the most amazing hair volume ever.

Rimmel did this little pyramid shaped kohl, and we all had black-rimmed eyes.

RJnomore1 · 09/11/2021 18:34

I had this! My bag actually had an elephant embroidered on it. Everything was from Virginia galleries in Glasgow though. Or local shops where you could barely move and they sold fairy ornaments and wind chimes next to clothes.

I still mourn ever getting rid of my cherry red docs.

I was about 16//7, 92/93 ish?

SingleHandSue · 09/11/2021 18:36

13 yo me lived in floaty chiffon skirts, tight ribbed t shirts in various shades of burgundy, brown and sludge green with one of those army surplus shirts with a German flag on the shoulder. Teemed with cherry red docs and a fabric slouchy rucksack. I thought I was the shit.

DedalusBloom · 09/11/2021 19:03

Back in the mid 80s you could still pick up fantastic stuff from charity shops because people who had the good stuff in the 50s and 60s were starting to die off (sorry not sorry)

I had an incredible collection of 50s skirts, 60s psychedelic dresses and old men's greatcoats from the (possibly) 40s in my teens.

Accessorised with pairs of flat, incredibly pointy, buckled witch shoes from Kensington Market, DMs, as many Indian jewelled bracelets as I could fit up my arms, jingly patchwork bags like yours and hugely heavy ethnic dirndl skirts that if caught in the rain would add about another three stone to your fighting weight. I stank of Body Shop Sandalwood oil.

I was a diehard Smiths fan, with lots of 60s psychedelia and West Coast influences, also the Doors, Siouxie, and bizarrely, lots of North Kent Psychobilly like Thee Milkshakes.

I feel so sorry for 'kids these days' as their doesn't seem the same breadth and depth of subcultures as there was when I was young.

Mifacagare · 09/11/2021 19:06

I still have two of these complete with mirrors and elephants I lived in Manchester as student in the early 90s, loved Afflecks, loved Manchester. Ace times.

I think i had that exact skirt Smile. Happy days!

Emmelina · 09/11/2021 19:26

This was my look mid-late 90’s! I remember rocking up to sixth form first day in my long Espirit skirt very similar to this one, with a leather thong necklace with a big wooden bead on it with a moon and feeling Oh So Cool.

Oh, we would have 100% been friends. Grin
Nyancat · 09/11/2021 19:29

Such memories, I had a very similar bag with loads of little mirrors on and to go with my skirt a fine chain belt with loads of tiny bells that jingled when I walked.

biscuitsnotbaby · 09/11/2021 19:31

I know an antique textiles dealer who sells those torans for a pretty penny. Everyone brought one back from their gap year. Now they’re 30 years old even though 1990 was fifteen minutes ago.

Pieceofpurplesky · 09/11/2021 19:31

I still love a mooch around Afflecks on a Saturday afternoon!

I was decked in mirrors, black eyeliner and docs from about 85 onwards. Bought a black silky dress from Afflecks second hand (or vintage as it's now called) and wore it with a black lace petticoat and matching gloves.

Pieceofpurplesky · 09/11/2021 19:32

And always anklets with bells on for the barefoot look at festivals

DedalusBloom · 09/11/2021 19:33

Genuinely I think if we all returned to a place where people jingled when they walked (am exempting Santa at this time of year...) I think we would all be much happier and possibly Global Harmony would only be moment away!

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 09/11/2021 19:33

I dress like this now. I got Afflecks at least once a year Grin

StepawayfromtheBiscuittin · 09/11/2021 19:38

Mood rings.
Loved the skirts, the army surplus bags
We wore slouchy boots or DMs. Wish I had kept my Docs, they were super.
Grew up in Belfast. Shopped in Fresh Garbage.
I remember going to Afflecks Palace with a friend who went to Manchester for Uni. Heaven.

I was thinking of those skirts the other week and wondering if I could get one now to hide the multitude of sins I committed during the pandemic and the 30 years prior to it.

BasiliskStare · 09/11/2021 19:39

OK OK I am older and can't join in the the bell thing - but hear this - I once went to the Camden Palace dressed in a victorian night dress and boots - Ha ! [grin) - Simple minds as I recall - to give you taste of the era ( I know I m not as cool as most ) Grin - just had to say it. Friend of mine got the most fantastic leopard print trousers from Affleck's palace in the late 70s. Sounds dreadful but she carried them off with aplomb.

PleaseReferToMeAsBritneySpears · 09/11/2021 19:39

This was my look! You describe it very well! I was 15 in 1990. I don't know the shops you mention as I was down south. We used to go to Carnaby Street and Camden Market when one of us had a birthday and we were allowed to go up to London for the day. When we were 17 we finally made it to Glastonbury!

minilegofigure · 09/11/2021 19:40

Ah thank you for this thread. I use to go to sixth form dressed like this. When I see the sixth formers around now, they are all super smart in suits whereas I was all tasseled mirror skirts, dms, woven friendship bracelets and waistcoats. I'm glad I was a sixth former then - plenty of time to wear suits! Smile

Talipesmum · 09/11/2021 19:52

Yes, Afflecks Palace, and the Corn Exchange before the bombing, when it got all done up all fancy and they got rid of all the lovely hippy shops with carved dragons, essential oils and tartan and mirrored skirts. I’m still cross about that.

I bought a deep red velvet long long skirt with little mirrors all over it from Portobello Road marked when I went to London once. I felt sooo sophisticated.

Monkeytennis97 · 09/11/2021 19:54

@tunainatin

Oh yes, that was my look in the 90s too 😊
Snap. Long embroidered waistcoats too.
Trainblanket · 09/11/2021 19:54

Oh yes! Little mirrors and elephants on everything. Army surplus shirts and trousers. Cherry red DM’s. big woolly jumpers with flowers on. Leather cord necklaces.
Indian style throws, incense and sun and moons all over my bedroom.
So cool!!
Urban outfitters recently with the teenager was a bit of a throwback!

felulageller · 09/11/2021 19:55

Yeah I liked the hippy early 90s style.
