I used to wear this stuff when I was 16-21, (which would have been 1990 onwards) we also bought army surplus rucksacks and embroidered into them, usually peace symbols and ban the bomb.. The skirts often had little mirrors on and were very long and swishy!

We wore patchouli oil or sandalwood and due to being in the north we shopped mostly at Afflecks Palace in Manchester. We loved the Stone Roses, The Doors, The Smiths, Velvet Underground, etc. Glastonbury was very different then, no paps or celebs in Hunter wellies all over it.

I also wore those very long tiny necklaces made up of thousands of multicoloured beads. When one snapped, as they invariably would, you could still find random beads near the skirting boards 20 yrs later Grin
We wore the dyed tights and woven bracelets.

Anyway I saw these items on ebay and it was such a blast from the past. It is amazing how the sensorial element of a particular time can crash back in.

And not forgetting the Docs. I still wear those. I still wear long skirts but don't reek of patchouli (prefer Guerlain) and prefer more minimal designs/fabrics and colours nowadays.
We didnt call it 'hippy' but it was classed as alternative, to a point. I mean, we used to hold burning joysticks in nightclubs whilst swaying around dreamily when The Sunday's were playing......

@goose1964

That was the late 70s/early 80s revival
I was just coming to say that this was my late 70s/early 80s look! The smell of patchouli takes me right back. I loved the long strings of love beads and I used to make dangly earrings to match.
Craftycorvid · 11/11/2021 08:30

Such a lovely thread! I was a student in Leeds in the early 90s and, wow, but they were simpler times in so many ways. Snags sell stripy tights....just sayin’ Wink

Sooverthemill · 11/11/2021 10:00

@Floisme

Oh dear .... that was my look too, only it was 20 years earlier, when Affleck and Browns was a rather fusty department store GrinI swear I had that same bag and skirt though.

Did you wear clogs and a shawl too or did they not make it out of the 70s?

Yup me too. Camden in 1977 onwards
ShowOfHands · 11/11/2021 10:05

I still dress exactly like this. I'm currently wearing tie dye dungarees, DMs and a jacket with little mirrors, hair is dyed with henna and my nose is pierced. I clearly haven't moved on.

ShowOfHands · 11/11/2021 10:05

Oh and I'm off to see the Levellers next month (postponed due to Covid).

Ulysses · 11/11/2021 10:10

@TrashyPanda

Oh goodness, this was me and my pals in 70s/80s Scotland.

We’d go to Cockburn Street market and think we were sooooo cool.
And spend hours plaiting each other’s wet hair into hundreds of tiny little plaits (tied with thread) - when they dried you undid them had the most amazing hair volume ever.

Rimmel did this little pyramid shaped kohl, and we all had black-rimmed eyes.

I was a big fan of Cockburn St as well!
crossstitchingnana · 11/11/2021 10:13

Grunge?

MrsMadderRose · 11/11/2021 10:29

Oh that bag OP, and the whole thread! 😍

I grew up in West Yorkshire, was a teen in the 80s and went shopping in Leeds. I used to go to a hippy/goth shop on New Station Street and a coooool (I thought) record shop in the Merrion Centre, sadly forgotten both their names.

As an older teen, going to Manchester on the train to go to Affleck's Palace was a major adventure, however I never really actually bought much there and found it a bit scary (would never have admitted that at the time!)

I wore leggings, DM boots, big shirts and jumpers, or a long hippy skirt - and always a bag like that :o It would dig into my shoulder and was impossible to find anything in, but I had a whole series of them right through my teen years and university.

In fact I wore this get up to my Oxbridge interview including the biggest DMs you ever saw.
@Classica here you go 🥰
Sweet baby jesus, just look at him, he was so beautiful in that film it was painful. I wanted to be Star too. I grew my hair long but never got it quite right :(

MrsMadderRose · 11/11/2021 10:41

I wore dewberry or patchouli, and had backcombed hair with a silk scarf in it, and mismatched earrings one of which was a little silver spider :)

My style is different now, in fact it keeps evolving, but I still sometimes get a mood for wearing gothy black layers or a long hippy skirt.

SulisMinerva · 11/11/2021 11:00

This was absolutely my style in the 90s. I loved the hippy look - still do but have to adapt it slightly to work better for my middle-aged mum body.

AliasGrape · 11/11/2021 11:04

Oh yes! This was me in the 90s too. Lovely memories

TableTopTennis · 11/11/2021 12:14

Yes I do!

Pheasantlysurprised · 11/11/2021 13:12

For myself and my age group, grunge came a bit later.
At 16 I was mad about The Pixies, and the word 'grunge' came later on after Nirvana. As far as I can recall, Nirvana admitted to being influenced by The Pixies. So I think the whole grunge thing was more market friendly and a few years later - ie, nobody considered The Sundays, Wonderstuff, or The Smiths to be 'grunge'. It was more bedsit indie, or variations of.

But, it probably differs by area.

Used to shop at Afflecks too and similiar (but smaller) place in Liverpool in early - mid 90s. Cockburn st in Edinburgh too. Typical winter look for me was short skirt (usually with embroidery, little mirrors or similar) over leggings with ankle boots of some description, tunic type top or band t-shirt with oversized man's jacket or baggy long cardigan. Summer look omit leggings and replace with long hippie skirt, remove cardigan or jacket. don't think I have actually changed that much tbh. Still wear leggings over a short jersey skirt, long tunics, long hoodies and fly boots or similar

ADreadedSunnyDay · 11/11/2021 13:14

Oh god just remembered I had an army surplus parka too for ages

MrsMadderRose · 11/11/2021 15:09

I didn't have the parka but me and my friends used to go to charity shops for huge men's wool coats. I loved mine so much I wore it around the house too :o

Craftycorvid · 11/11/2021 15:50

@MrsMadderRose That record shop in the Merrion Centre isJumbo Records and the bags had an elephant logo on them. To the best of my knowledge, the shop still survives.

DedalusBloom · 11/11/2021 16:22

Yes! They weighed an absolute ton! What happened to coats like that?
MrsMadderRose · 11/11/2021 16:33

Yes Jumbo, thanks Corvid! That's amazing and brilliant that it's still there – I want to go now! (live nowhere near Leeds these days so it will have to wait...)

I remember going to get the 12-inch of Birthday by the Sugarcubes, which I still have. God I was so very cool that day :O

BasiliskStare · 11/11/2021 16:35

I once spent 2 days painting a Who logo ( the one with the tall arrow ) on my younger brother's parka

Now he is 50 - does he appreciate it - no Grin & no idea where the coat is - ha ha

LouLou198 · 11/11/2021 16:41

I remember and had everything you have mentioned! I often visited Afflecks palace, is it still open? I regret getting rid of my well worn in cherry red doc marten boots. I've recently bought some flora ones and I am in agony trying to break them in!

Craftycorvid · 11/11/2021 17:38

Affleck’s is still very much in business and still very alternative.

MrsMadderRose · 11/11/2021 17:48

This thread is making me think of this song:

SallyOMalley · 11/11/2021 18:31
