How can I feel less frumpy when I go out in the evening?

I in my late 40s and I've lost my way. I'm carrying about a stone too much weight at the moment, which makes me a size 14, which isn't comfortable for me. Although I'm not short (5'6"), I'm not in proportion and I need to wear short length trousers/jeans, so I feel frumpy already because of my short legs, but I'm also big boobed, and nothing ever seems to sit right. I carry the extra weight in my mid section. I can't wear dresses because of my short legs/long torso. I would normally wear black skinny jeans and whatever decent top to go out, but then whoever I'm with always seems so much better turned out than me. I have no personal style anymore. I don't know how to feel good about myself when I go out. Do I just need to change up the top I wear, or try to change my style totally (i.e., find my style again)? Is it ok to wear biker boots to go out in the evening to a restaurant, or do I need something smarter? Any suggestions and links would help, even better if you're the same shape as me.

@gleegeek, someone who understands the pain :) . I sound so negative, but it's really hard. I know a size 14 isn't huge, and I see plenty of women looking great a size 14, but it's about the proportions, and being able to buy something a knowing it will fit - in the right size, of course, but nothing ever looks right on me. Evening dresses are the bane of my life, because really, it has to be a dress for certain occasions. I think I just need to find some really nice tops to go with jeans. Bootcuts were the fit for me, but I'm struggling mentally with going back to what I wore in the 90s, and feeling like it looks ok to wear now.

@MimosaFields, maybe i need to try an empire dress with a belt. Do you have any links you could share from the shops you mentioned?

I don't have any actual links right now, but what I look for are dresses like this, but within my budget, of course. So V neck, or shirt that I can unbutton. Defined waist, or able to cinch with a belt. Sleeves that are not too tight (no sleeves that finish at the height of my breast - That's not a good look on me)

I recently bought a dress by Neverfullydressed and I am very happy with it as well. It is not this one, but quite similar: www.neverfullydressed.co.uk/products/cedar-wrap-dress

MimosaFields · 08/11/2021 13:17

I have the purple version of this dress. Ganni are a great brand for me and it has honestly being the most versatile dress. I have worn it for parties, funerals, dinners. The cost per wear by now must be in negative figures www.theoutnet.com/en-gb/shop/product/ganni/dresses/midi-dress/floral-print-crepe-midi-wrap-dress/10163292708220192

Rocket1982 · 08/11/2021 13:18

How about something like this, it's empire, wrap and midi and has long sleeves www.joebrowns.co.uk/all-the-leaves-are-brown-dress-we484#colour=193

MrsVeryTired · 08/11/2021 13:37

I'm similar sized but longer legs, Wedge or block heeled ankle boots would definitely lengthen your legs with some dark slim trousers/jeans.

Something like the Fly Yama boots are very leg lengthening with some slim fit jeans and a "nice top". I know its a cliche but when you have big boobs and slimmer legs thats the look that works and its not frumpy, yes not very on trend but stylish imo.

BentCandle · 08/11/2021 14:54

I have the answer! (Well, for me anyway, and your post could've been written by me).

Instead of jeans, get these! They are dressier and more going-outy than skinny jeans. dark animal print jeans

Wear with any black tunic top like This one from Phase 8

Add a cool scarf or necklace and ice black suede ankle boots and at least you will feel covered and not as frumpy as before.

Thisismynewname123 · 08/11/2021 17:43

@BentCandle I like that idea and I was going to order some stuff from Next today anyway. Thank you

Could you manage a jumpsuit? I'm fairly long waisted and have a couple from New Look that I always get compliments on. Cropped at the ankle, stretchy fabric, both plain black. Always look really dressy when paired with nice shoes and jewellery.

HH76ds31 · 08/11/2021 18:34

Jumpsuits are not great when long bodied (I know - I bought one and regret it). There is no hiding the fact that my bum is where most people’s thighs are. At least with dresses you can do the optical illusion thing with empire line or belts.

TannyFickler · 08/11/2021 18:43

Could try Bravissimo for boob accommodating clothes? A good bra can make you feel so different about yourself IME.

MrsVeryTired · 08/11/2021 18:55

Looks good @BentCandle I agree with your choice, a pair of fancy skinny/slim trousers is a great idea when top heavy. Those are fab (I won't buy them as I have lots of "fancy" trousers already Grin)

Thisismynewname123 · 08/11/2021 20:31

@Gastropod definitely can't wear a jumpsuit, unfortunately.

@TannyFickler Bravissimo are one of the worst for long bodies. I have a very old cocktail dress from them which is good because it has a ruched waist that I can adjust, but that's all. Bras not a problem

I feel your pain, I am tall, 5'8, but with big boobs, short legs and a long body. The long body and big boobs mean that all pretty tops, blouses are too short and hit me at the worst part of my hips/waist.

I think the key is getting things altered. Honestly, it seems like the top tip of so many celebrities. I remember Jennifer Aniston said she even has t-shirts adjusted at the sleeve, so they hit her at just the right point. All our bodies are so different, a good alteration place can help change necklines, tighten at the waist, adjust sleeves etc.

I would also recommend finding someone on Instagram with your body shape, preferably one that lives in the UK, so you have access to their shops and then copy what type of clothes they wear!

thisplaceisweird · 08/11/2021 21:03

No to the biker boots. You need heels or heeled ankle boots, high ones! That's the most flattering upgrade you can do.

thisplaceisweird · 08/11/2021 21:06

@MrsGhastlyCrumb

Book a John Lewis stylist appointment. Caveat: leave your credit card at home! The woman I saw was so good at getting the right clothes for my shape. (Obvs they may vary, but it didn't cost anything when I did it, and she even got me stuff from some sort of extreme sale rail round the back...)
Great advice, sometimes you just need someone to get you out of your comfort zone
Oneforthemoneytwo · 08/11/2021 22:03

The velvet M&S trousers are fabulous. I would wear them with a cami and a blazer and either heeled animal print boots or other heels

Puddlesandbubbles · 08/11/2021 22:15

Most John Lewis stores offer free personal shopping appointments. Can go on your own or with friends. They will pull things they think will be flattering and give you styling tips. No obligation to buy and may help you find your confidence!

@gleegeek

OP I could have written exactly your post! I'm 5'6", 32HH bust, size 14, long body, short legs, just turned 50. It's impossible! Loads of lovely clothes on this thread but nothing that would suit meSad Tops are always too short, tight on the bust and loose on the waist. Shirts don't button up over my boobs. Dresses the waist is invariably about 4 inches above my actual waist, anything unfitted looks like a sack, trousers are always too long and not the right shape if shortened. If anyone sees a v- neck or scoop neck dress with a lower waist please post it as I love dresses! Also tops to go out in the evening to go with jeans.

@Thisismynewname123

Appreciate all the comments and I'm working through them.

@InTheLabyrinth, agree with what you say. I have yet to find any casual dress that falls in the right place. A few years ago I used to wear the Hush Tara (I think?) one, that had the ruched skirt and baggy top, and I wore that to death because I could pull the waist to the right place. Unfortunately they're no longer the right style to wear. I agree re- empire lines making you look heavy. I'm open to them only because I found an evening dress a couple of years ago with a wrap bust and an empire line that was incredibly flattering, and I've been trying to replicate it in a casual dress but yet to find something.

@IAmTheLovechildOfYvesAndIsabel lots of recommendations for Trinny, but I find that she is so slim (and not large busted) that the general rules don't always work. I wear good bras. They're not the problem. I wear a fantasie moulded cup which gives a great shape.

@Notlostjustexploring, I think the dark blouse, dark jeans is pretty much what I'd end up with, because I'll feel like myself. Maybe I just need some new boots and accessories to lift it a bit.

@Chewbecca, I love the look of the Hush blouses, but I've tried ordering them in the past at the fabric was horrible and caused static hair. I need to find some similar lovely prints with a better fabric.

@cherrypiepie, agree skirts are always easier than a dress. I struggle with the midi anyway, because with short legs they look like a maxi on me, so I have to try loads to find a short length midi so that I falls at mid calf on me.

All the M&S links, but I've yet to ever find an M&S dress that looks right on me. I've tried on loads over the years.

Hate all the synthetic fabrics everywhere at the moment.
Chippymunks · 09/11/2021 09:56

Have you tried a long pleated skirt with elasticated waist band? Next have some.

Legdaysucks · 09/11/2021 10:44

I just wanted to say it's ok to wear whatever you love and you probably need to try and stop comparing yourself to other people... If you love your biker boots, wear them at every possible opportunity...

Buy some really amazing undies - particularly a great bra. Book a fitting and hoist those puppies up. It make a massive difference. As a woman with larger boobs. I love a slashed neck line and I always wear a fitted top rather than try to disguise my shape in acres of material.

I too have shorter legs and a bit of a tummy so I look for really good tailoring on trousers (no pinching or sucking in). I like a cropped ankle length with a flat shoe or trainer. I also like a mid calf length wraparound dress with black shaping tights and ankle boots. M&S have had some lovely ones in at the moment which can be dressed up or down. Also a mid length pleated skirt and plain fitted tee shirt works for me.

I have rather a couple of outfits that I love and feel amazing in just for going out. I wear and repeat and that's fine by me.
