Up to you, but a coat that doesn’t do up seems pointless this time of year!

Caramellatteplease · 07/11/2021 07:31

I wouldn't keep a waterproof coat that could keep my front half dry

Knownbyanothername · 07/11/2021 07:32

I it were me it would be out of fashion by the time I’d lost the weight!
And a raincoat is for keeping out the rain which it won’t if it doesn’t do up…

IDontThinkSoNo · 07/11/2021 07:34

It needs to do up to keep you dry

Kittykatmacbill · 07/11/2021 07:38

Won’t you get a cold and wet front?

MacNTosh · 07/11/2021 07:41

I never fasten my coats, so I’d keep it.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 07/11/2021 07:48

i wouldnt wear it now
it is for spring

That kind of coat is pointless if it doesn’t do up, so only keep it if it almost does up and you’ll definitely lose the weight.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 07/11/2021 07:52

My leather jacket doesn't really fasten comfortably. I wear it with a scarf if it's cold. I think it will be annoying with a raincoat though.

MargosKaftan · 07/11/2021 07:53

Return it. You don't need something hanging in your wardrobe to make you feel a failure if it doesn't fit in spring.

There is a temptation to buy something that's not quite right because its a bargain, but in my experience, you always end up buying another of whatever it is because the original isn't quite right.

Return this coat. Wait until spring to see if you find one that's perfect. You'll end up buying on in spring anyway when this one doesn't work properly as it doesn't keep you dry.

Agree - it’ll just be a stick to beat yourself with.
pictish · 07/11/2021 08:00

No…send it back. It’s useless as a coat.

pictish · 07/11/2021 08:02

No one ever slims into items…they just lurk there reminding the person that they don’t fit into it. Not helpful.

A bargain is only a bargain if you would have happily paid full whack for it anyway. Buying something that isn’t quite right because it’s cheap just means you’ve bought something that isn’t quite right and that you’ll never use.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 07/11/2021 08:14

thank.
return label now printed.

i saw another person with an open coat and wondered whether fashion wise it was ok.

thanks all for talking sense to me

MrsLargeEmbodied · 07/11/2021 08:19

it is not actually a rain coat, it is a light weight parka coat but it wont do!

Pommelhorse · 07/11/2021 08:24

Depends. If you are big-busted with narrow shoulders like me, then you are resigned to a life of wearing your coats open, because if you buy to fit your bust then they look awful on the shoulder. Much better to buy to fit your frame and shoulder, and wear a scarf over an open coat.

Otherwise op, no, don't buy it!

ExcessiveIyDisorganised · 07/11/2021 08:27

I virtually never do up coats, only if it's pouring with rain or blowing a gale, otherwise I overheat so I might keep it. I have a lightweight black coat with no fastenings at all, that works in a boyfriend cardi sort of way.

TheCategoryIs · 07/11/2021 10:39

Coats often look better not done up, you can fill the gap with a big scarf or even wear a light gilet underneath. If it’s meant to be a waterproof thing for wearing in rain then not ideal though, you’d get a wet front.

Youngatheart00 · 07/11/2021 10:40

I really don’t often wear a coat done up, so
I’d say it’s fine, particularly with a scarf as others have said. My waterproof is an over the head pull one one but all other coats I wear open, even when it’s cold!

onlyconnect · 07/11/2021 11:42

Sorry to slightly highjack. I had just this dilemma yesterday after seeing a vintage suede blazer style jacket in an antique market. It fit all over except that it wouldn't do up. It's the sort of style I'd very rarely do up but decided against anyway. I just thought that it'd nag at me ( ie make me feel bad about myself) and also there's a slight OCD part of me that just can't quite relax if it won't do up. It's like if something in the house doesn't work; I hate it.

I don't mind open with jackets - bikers, blazers etc, even some coats. But not raincoats. Same sizing issue re bust and narrow shoulders
CointreauVersial · 07/11/2021 12:49

The only reason I would do up a coat is if:

a) it was a raincoat, and it was actually raining
b) it was really cold

It sounds like your coat is neither a raincoat nor a warm coat you'd choose to wear on a very cold day, so in practice you'd probably be fine, but it's always good to have the option.

Are you serious? It's a rain coat. It won't keep you dry in the rain if it's not done up.

LOL - I had to laugh - after posting on this thread earlier DH and I went out for dinner, and I got very chilly walking down the road. Went to do up my coat (which is relatively new), only to find that it doesn't actually have any buttons or fastening at all.... Grin Doh.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 08/11/2021 07:04

@CointreauVersial
Grin
i shall follow your lead, and leave it open
