How can I check if I bought fake jewellery?

I bought a Links of London necklace from Ebay, supposedly from a closing down sale. Ex display, no box. The hallmark is really tiny and the necklace looks a bit different from the pics. I'm no expert, how do I know if I've been sold a fake?

I read about taking it to a jewellers - can I just walk into a Goldsmith's and ask them? Are they really willing to give advice like that for free?

Sorry for my ignorance! It's a gift, so don't want to give a fake.

I'm sure most jewellers wouldn't have an issue with you bringing it in to get their opinion. I used to work in high end jewellery 15+ yrs ago and customers would bring all sorts of stuff in. They'll have a small jewellers magnifying glass that they can see hallmarks and stones and the details of it all much better than you could with your eye. It only takes a minute, so no harm in going and asking them.

Thanks @WineGetsMeThroughIt. Do you think a chain jeweller's like beaverbrooks will do it or do I need to find an independent?

It probably depends on the sales person. But I would be more inclined to go to someone independent.

I’d be in linden to go into an independent who advertises that they buy gold. Then you can ask their opinion user the premise that you are considering selling it.
