Top with pleated skirt?

I have a birthday party to go in a few weeks and Ive seen a few nice pleated skirts, but not sure what to wear with one, don't really want to wear a plain t shirt.

I wore a longish pleated skirt last weekend to lunch with black ballet pumps and a black boat neck long sleeve top. It was plain but I just felt 'put together'.

This is no help for a party but I find sweatshirts work well me my long pleated skirt.

@Chippymunks thanks, yes I went out the other week to a few bars and wore a off the shoulder sweatshirt with a pleated skirt.
