Wedding guest - trousers?

Has anyone worn black trousers to a wedding? With a dressy top and heels etc?

Just been dress shopping again and I look utterly dreadful in dresses Sad. I’m a size 16-18 and disproportionately big around the muffin top/ab fat and no style suits me. I have a waist and smaller boobs so shift dresses make me look like a bag of potatoes too, and actually bigger. The fashion all seems to be for shirred waists and florals which are just hideous on me.

So, I wonder if I could wear black trousers and a dressy top instead? At least the trousers hold my stomach in and minimise that area.

I’ve just never seen a woman wearing trousers at a wedding. I also don’t mean wear a tux/skimpy trouser suit like some celebs do - just ordinary smart black trousers etc.

is it an all day or an evening only invite?

Brakebackcyclebot · 04/11/2021 14:25

I have. I don't see why smart trousers with lovely shoes and a dressy top would be an issue.

mynameiscalypso · 04/11/2021 14:27

Lots of women wore trousers to my wedding. The dress code was something like 'party clothes'.

waytheleaveswork · 04/11/2021 14:30

I wore these cropped trousers to my brothers wedding last month.

I think block colour and heels looks best with trousers and you can end up looking dressier than those in dresses. I'm not a dress person and hate formal wear, but felt good in this.

Trousers are not an issue for a wedding at all - a top and a trousers is really no different to a jumpsuit and they are considered acceptable. However, while trousers are perfectly fine, they should be as dressy/smart as their dress/skirt/jumpsuit counter parts, which it sounds like yours are.

Black does give me pause, I view it as quite a sombre colour so avoid it for weddings, even in accessories. But that isn't a hard and fast rule, just ensure that the top and accessories you wear give the black trousers a more celebratory feel.

AuntieMarys · 04/11/2021 14:48

I don't wear skirts or dresses so it's always trousers for me.
Luckily there's no one left really to get married who o know so I don't have to stress about it.

Theremustbemoretome · 04/11/2021 15:10

@MrsMercury it’s an all day invite

@SummaLuvin actually I’ve just remembered that I do have a navy pair of dressy trousers too.

I’m just worried about feeling conspicuous in trousers as I’ve never seen a woman in anything other than a dress at a wedding. I would rather wear trousers and a dressy top etc than look hideous in a dress just because that’s what everyone else wears!

It’s so depressing not being able to find anything flattering at this size. In my slim days I could walk into any shop and find something Sad

I think someone has worn trousers at most weddings I’ve been to - it’s warmer if nothing else!! Those navy trousers on the photo look very classy, and I recall a friend wore red trousers and a cream top and looked amazing! I think navy or green would be better than black though

UnsuitableHat · 04/11/2021 15:14

I've worn trousers to weddings - perfectly nice option. I'm sure nobody will be scrutinising your outfit too much anyway.

StCharlotte · 04/11/2021 19:56

I've worn black wide legged trousers with a predominantly black top to a wedding. Never crossed my mind it was inappropriate or sombre.

JengaNonConfirming · 04/11/2021 20:00

My Mum wore trousers to my wedding, she's really not a dress person.

AuntieMarys · 05/11/2021 07:23

jenga my mother wore a trousersuit in 1976 to my brothers wedding

Jasminesmellingcandles · 05/11/2021 07:26

I wore trousers to brothers wedding last month, I feel I looked at smart as others in dresses.
