Don't think it matters how old/big you are.

The important thing is the choice of jeans and boots.

ADDICTEDtosayingHAAAAAAAPYxmas · 13/12/2007 16:02

i do it:

19
size 12
5 foot 4
sticky out arse
short legs and chunky thighs

zippitippitoes · 13/12/2007 16:02

yep so new look and price les boots on 50 year old bint is fine

harleyd · 13/12/2007 16:07

i tried skinnies on in dorothy perkins too today and they were rubbish
all stretchy and baggy

but the new look ones were grand

noddyholder · 13/12/2007 16:12

high waisted for young only UNLESS you cover the waist section and then it makes an excellent corset and gives a great shape

Hello again Current,

These look skinny are a nice blue, but may not be skinny enough since the webpage says "straight leg"

www.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=19551&s toreId=12556&categoryId=74441&parentcategoryrn=74433&productId=523853&langId=-1

These are skinny but are they too distressed for your taste?
www.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=19551&s toreId=12556&categoryId=74441&parentcategoryrn=74433&productId=531609&langId=-1

Anyway, that is what topshop had to offer. Tried French connection and Oasis and nothing exciting there....

These are Levi's at John Lewis (though not sure if that immediatly means they're a no)
www.johnlewis.com/Fashion/+Womenswear/Jeans+and+Cords/Jeans+and+Cords/6089/9312/Product.aspx

Any of these going in the right direction? There's always premium brands like sass&bide etc....but is that just too much tempation?

Thanks Gemy - I like all of those actually! Difficult to tell with the Topshop ones how low-rise they are (or even IF they are) - also seem to only do 32" leg and I'm far too short for that! That said, if they're tucked into boots I guess it doesn't matter that much.

Do not like the "shortened jeans" look!

The straight-leg ones are nice actually, might be slightly more forgiving than skinnies.

I disagree! My topshop skinnies I have found to be very accommodating of muffin top! (accommodating enough for me to wear tight jumpers with no visable "muffin situation")

But, I am usually size 8 and did buy a 10. This does mean the legs are slightly less "skinny" on me than the 8s. They are also nice and low-waisted

dee24 · 14/12/2007 23:00

I wear them and I'm 24, 5'3", size 10 with very slight muffin top
I have black boots with a slight wedge heel and a nice pair of tan faith boots with a stack heel. Usually wear them with a long jumper and a waist clinch belt (good ones in primark for £3)
New look skinny jeans are the best! They don't sag/go baggy.

I think after a baby muffin top is inevitable, no matter what size you are

Spanx! I wear a pair when I'm wearing REALLY low cut jeans and they smooth it all out.....they don't really make me much slimmer just stop it all hanging over. Of course they are not attractive, and I only wear if I've got a longer jumper or top on but I do love them.

CurrantBun · 17/12/2007 21:35

Jajas, it's REALLY frustrating isn't it? I recently took a day off work with the aim of updating my wardrobe (I was pregnant last winter so have not bought any new winter clothes for two or three years). All I came home with were 3 basic long-sleeved T's from Gap. Everything else I tried on looked dreadful. Then it started to pour with rain and I just gave up and went home!

I am HOPELESS at shopping. I always end up either buying nothing, or buying things that are pretty much exactly the same as things I already own. I have no idea how to put new looks together so I always play safe and go with what I know - generally jeans, fitted jumpers and boots (which is a look that really suits me even if it is boring).

I am a hopeless case

Actually Jajas have been thinking about doing that! They don't come cheap though. But it could be a great investment if it means I actually end up with some clothes that are a) different from the normal boring stuff I seem to live in and b) fit me properly. Totally agree with you that petite ranges seem to cater mainly for the working wardrobe and offer very little in the way of casual gear (which, like you, is what I really need).

I religiously watch all those makeover programmes like What Not to Wear, Ten Years Younger, How to Look Good Naked etc, but find that in general (and no desire to offend anyone!) most of the women featured are oddly-shaped and fairly overweight so although they end up looking great, I can't adopt the ideas! I actually have a pretty good figure but am very small all over and it's not so much a case of not knowing what to wear as not being able to find anything that fits.

Gemy · 20/12/2007 14:03

Hi Currant, a friend of mine is also petite but has a really good figure. She buys lots of stuff at French Connection in a size 6, and also Ted Baker in it's smallest size [zero I think] their clothes always looks great and are perfectly in proportion (plus Ted Baker do lovely blouses, jackets and non-work-wear)

fairylights · 20/12/2007 14:11

i am 5'11" or 6" depending on who measures me and a size 14 on my bottom half/size 12 on top and age 28 and wear straight jeans tucked into boots ALL the time! usually wear something long-ish to hide the muffin top. But maybe i have been committing a fashion crime all this time - oh no! have a history of it though

fairylights · 20/12/2007 14:12

that would be 6' tall, not 6 inches!!

sorkycake · 20/12/2007 14:55

I have jeans from topshop, moto is it?

They are 25in waist, ultra low rise and straight leg, which I prefer to skinnies. FC do size 6 clothes which I like, I second TB.
I get most annoyed with the supermarkets tbh because they often do a nice jumper, shirt etc, but never anywhere near my size. I could go for kids sizes but then I prefer my dd to wear t-shirts with fairies on them, not me.
I know what suits me, I just can never find anything that size. It is a PITA. Karen Millen dresses run small I think, but are overpriced generally. Anywhere cheap forget it. I'm learning to make my own this Summer I've got a machine so I'm going to give that a try.
