How can I accessorise a black dress for a party?

I’ve got two evening events to go to soon - a birthday dinner at a swanky restaurant in London, and a drinks party in an upmarket London hotel. No dress code for either, but I need to look decent.

I can’t afford new clothes, but I own a few nice simple black pencil dresses that will probably fit the bill. But… I don’t want to look like I’m going to work.

How can I dress up a plain black dress? I’m useless with hair, make up and accessories. Oh, and I hate heels.

Sorry, just said you can’t afford new clothes, so budget may be limited. Trawl eBay and vinted etc for good costume jewellery.

How about (micro)fishnets/different hosiery?

Good strong lipstick will mean you can get away with less other makeup. There are loads of really good high street brands (NYX for example) where you can get good liner (for a base) and lipstick for under £10.

I hate heels too. Have you got any smart knee high boots you could wear?
I’d go to a charity shop and get some costume jewelry/long neclace, a bright coloured scarf and some pretty hair clips (or a hair band if you are into those- I’m not). My makeup is always low key, but I might paint my nails if I wanted colour. I hope you have a great time!
