I love my tank top! I hate sleeves though so I like to be able to have warm torso and cooler arms. I wear either a white t-shirt or a white linen shirt underneath.

NoBetterthanSheShouldBe · 24/10/2021 11:45

I have a fair isle one and wore it more than anticipated in spring, feeling very up to the minute. I need warm arms now, but it will be back next spring over jersey tops.

Tanaqui · 24/10/2021 11:51

I love them, but the thick knit, slightly wider than the shoulder ones that seem to be fashionable right now make me look bulky- I wear a thinner more fitted one over a patterned shirt with 7/8 trousers for work, or with jeans at the weekend when it's too cold for just a shirt and too hot for a jumper!

candycane222 · 24/10/2021 11:55

My look: brown tanktop with beige diamond pattern acros the front, (knitted myself!) worn with brown peg trouses and a beige shirt with oversized collar. Oh yes!

Of course we are back in the 1970s and being 16, I have the figure of - a 16-year-old.

But actually, I have eyed up ebay for mens knitted sleeveless pullovers off and on over the years - with I'd made more effort and snapped on up sooner - presumably prices have trebled :D!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 24/10/2021 12:24

I have one which is more waistcoat style from Other Stories - navy with gold buttons. I’ve worn it over floral dresses mostly, but also with Breton tops.

einekleinenachtarbeit · 24/10/2021 17:34

I bought one from M and S. Cream fair isle with a roll over crew neck. Oversized and looked awful. Like an american footballer and the fair isle pattern stretched across my tummy so emphasising it even more. Really wanted to like it but sadly went back Sad.

Firesidefox · 24/10/2021 17:39

I've just bought a navy cashmere one from Cos and will wear it with bare arms and tailored black trousers.

Brightmagic2021 · 24/10/2021 17:42

I ordered one from Next in blue with a geometric pattern. I thought it would go with lots Of things but it has a shirt with floaty sleeves sewn into it which I didn’t realise. Dd really liked it but I thought it was too baggy to be flattering.

VerbenaGirl · 24/10/2021 17:44

Definitely wouldn’t work on me or DS2, but DS1 would rock the tank top look.

Amberflames · 24/10/2021 17:44

I used to have a lovely raspberry pink one in merino wool that I wore over a white shirt with a pencil skirt for work. Unfortunately the moths got it.

mrssmiling · 24/10/2021 18:13

Definitely. Ideally from Brora if I had the money!

Purplewithred · 24/10/2021 18:17

I knitted a truly fabulous Patricia Roberts Fairisle one for a boyfriend about 35 years ago. I wish I had it now.

AnnieSnap · 24/10/2021 20:58

I’ve bought several this season. I feel the cold a lot and they can be popped on with almost anything 🙂

Firesidefox · 24/10/2021 22:06

Yes! @Purplewithred - mine came today and I LOVE it!

Thought I would send it back but it's really nice and well cut and flattering on.

DameMaureen · 25/10/2021 01:22

I like them on the 7 foot H and M dummies in the window but that's it .

DramaAlpaca · 25/10/2021 01:26

I don't like the look at all so won't be going there. I'm tall with broad shoulders and I'm sure they'd just look mannish on me anyway.

TuftyMarmoset · 25/10/2021 01:53

I definitely would not. I’m not a fan of the grandad look. I’m also a pear shape and don’t think they are flattering.

BestIsWest · 25/10/2021 10:52

Just came from another thread. I loved them back in the 90s. I’d like to see waistcoats, knitted or otherwise back too. They probably are and no one’s told me.

EllaPaella · 25/10/2021 12:21

I like them and want one but haven't found exactly what I'm looking for yet. I've been looking on ebay and Vinted. I'm 42 and we all wore them when I was in my late teens, I remember having a lovely one from Jane Norman.

Gonnagetgoing · 27/10/2021 16:18

I used to wear two - a navy blue and a forest green one, wool from Jigsaw - both separately - over shirts when I had a corporate PA role and needed to look smart - back in the days when you wore jacket and skirt suits. Mostly to keep me warm as smarter than cardigans.

I wouldn't wear them now because I don't need to.

Gonnagetgoing · 27/10/2021 16:22

@Purplewithred - the Cos one is nice. I think these tops look great if you have slim arms, not big bust and maybe slim waist but for more booby people (me now) - forget it.

In fact I'm sure I wore one but it was more of a black sleeveless softer wool vest from Benetton and I think it had a slight v neck - so less of a tank top - but this was back in 2000s. Wore it with black linen knee length Benetton skirt. Much slimmer then.

Gufo · 08/11/2021 14:26

I have one like the cos one but am feeling my age as can't face bare arms in November!
