Good red blue tone based lipstick

I've never owned a red lipstick - always too worried they'll make my teeth look yellow. But I've read that if they've got a blue base then that shouldn't happen..... I've got some vouchers for JL although could buy elsewhere, but how do you tell if a red lipstick has a blue base or not... ?

Any recommendations for a lovely (I feel like a red lipstick should be luxurious somehow!) red lipstick which doesn't make your teeth look yellow?

I never wear lipstick so I'm not familiar with the options, so doesn't necessarily need to be a stick of lipstick.

Thanks!

Russian Red by MAC

catfunk · 20/10/2021 08:48

Mac ruby woo

LifeAdvice · 20/10/2021 08:49

I have both the above and love them, Russian Red is slightly darker. Both have the blue base.

Dior 999 (or 99, can't remember!) is a suits everyone red.

MrsArrison · 20/10/2021 09:44

As per PP, Russian Red or Ruby Woo. RR is satin and bit more wearable, RW is ultra matte and looks amazing but needs well moisturised lips to look good and feel comfortable.

Ruby Woo. It now comes in different finishes if you find the original too matte, which it is.

BusterGonad · 20/10/2021 09:47

If you go in store the make up assistant will know which ones are blue based reds.

Hourglass icon is perfection!

Thanks all I’ll check them out.

I hate going to stores - JL is probably 40 mins+ drive away so not particularly convenient, and when I’ve gone recently I’ve struggled to find anybody on the makeup desks. Boots doesn’t have anybody to give guidance in my local store, so I’m not sure where you would go to get any actual advice locally. Plus you have to trawl through all of them speaking to loads of people. I basically hate shopping and will find any excuse not to go 🤣

Thanks - a less matte one sounds like higher maintenance, that’s a good tip thanks!

Chanel Gabrielle is my go to red lipstick. A slight sheen which makes it easy to wear and apply but not too glossy looking.

Nars Cruella (a lip pencil vs lipstick) is matte but surprisingly really easy to apply and not drying! Such a beautiful shade as well.

dgirluk · 20/10/2021 12:37

Whoops i meant a very matt one sounds like higher maintenance!

Nars Audacious in Carmen is also do a nice blue based red.

If it were me, I'd go to a department store or Boots and trawl round the counters as different brands suit different people. I had a lovely Estee Lauder blue based lipstick a few years ago. I'd bought MAC Russian Red etc and just didn't get on with it.

I think Mac Relentlessly Red is probably blue-toned too

Lookingoutside · 20/10/2021 16:05

Velvet Ribbon by Lisa Eldridge. You can buy it from her website.

It is absolutely stunning and perfectly blue.

Thefartingsofaofdenmarkstreet · 20/10/2021 17:49

I came on to say Velvet Ribbon - it's gorgeous!

It's like Ruby Woo but doesn't make your lips shrivel up into a prune!

Alonghairinapie · 20/10/2021 18:28

Lisa Eldridge lipsticks are the shizzle

BusterGonad · 21/10/2021 06:55

I'm not sure if they still sale it, but l'oréal Blakes red was suppose to a Ruby Woo dupe.

BusterGonad · 21/10/2021 06:55

Mac Relentlessly Red is very pink imo. It's lovely though and is definitely blue based.

BusterGonad · 21/10/2021 07:05

I've just remembered a lovely one I had, not drying, very comfortable to wear. Clinique pop Cherry Pop.

GreyPaw · 21/10/2021 15:30

MAC Dare You is gorgeously blue-based as well. It's apparently the one used in Fleabag.

Angrymum22 · 21/10/2021 15:34

Lancôme a lipstick shade 06 it is a very natural lip colour, blue red tone. I have a lip gloss in a similar shade. They also do an oil based lip tone again in a similar tone that is very light and natural looking.

frazzlesmore · 21/10/2021 17:10

mac red
