Anyone else want bigger, wavier hair?

Im growing more and more towards this in recent years.
Im fluffy and wavy myself, and have spent the past 15 years ironing it into a tired, flat disaster. If I slap a bit of leave in conditioner on it and dry it in a twist, or else just allow it flow, it looks healthier and thicker and just....more alive.
It really doesn't have to conform to anything it isn't. And I don't have to spend a fortune 'correcting' something that should not be considered wrong.

I was also looking at some older style pics on Pinterest and loved the wanton haphazardness of Helena Bonham carter's hair, Kate bush, etc.

Im not suggesting the 80's bon Jovi here, im talking about a more relaxed, natural, substantial kind of liberation from the super glossy, almost cardboard cut out styles we have been used to seeing for so long now, where women in the media are all straightened and glossed, afraid to move in case a stray strand breaks free.
Natural straight hair is gorgeous, but it has dominated the demands on women for too long, I think. The desperation to fight any fluffiness or frizz is kind of sad really.

Anyone else growing to prefer a little more wildness and naturalness to their hairstyles? This can look both contemporary and well groomed, but I believe we have been hoodwinked into perceiving it as crazy or untidy.
It didnt seem to bother anyone prior to the GHD craze - a very long running obsessive trend for very repressed, neat hair that had to reflect light like gloss paint and barely move.

And it isn't 'either-or' either: we can absolutely have natural, bigger hair without being untidy. I can't even relate to having to become a 'curly girl', which always strikes me as infantile and yet another way to beat oneself into submission - many curls and waves are not uniform and such strict methods are no cheerier than the GHD obsession to my mind.

Seen a lot of younger women and girls with long, fluffy hair, going with their natural texture out and about for a few years now. It's one thing as a middle aged woman I am happy to see!

I've ordered a babyliss big hair recently. It arrives soon I think, so can report back! Mine is the curly one.

NotMyCat · 29/10/2021 10:33

Mine is wavy, it's like I've been electrocuted if I brush it out! Very fine but lots of it

Wow! I would love hair like that. It's beautiful!
NotMyCat · 29/10/2021 10:52

@Getyourarseofffthequattro it's an absolute pain! Gets tangled and the waves stretch out easily

Jerrysgonnabeacableboy · 29/10/2021 11:04

@NotMyCat I love your hair!

NotMyCat · 29/10/2021 11:16

And when people say "why don't you just brush it?"

I have been striving for big, voluminous, slightly messy slightly wavy hair for years.I actually took a picture of 1980s Taylor Dane to the hairdressers once. Still not been able to achieve it, but I'll keep trying.

How do you create such lovely definition? Im not curly enough myself (mine does after washing but they limply fall out soon after) but the condition is beautiful, as is shrikeattacks :)

Nice to see some frizz pics I can identify with, too!

@NotMyCat I would call your hair curly rather than wavy. It's beautiful and I'm jealous!

My hair is slightly wavy and very prone to frizz. Curly girl has been working well though and I have some proper waves. As a result, I have more days when my hair makes me happy and fewer days of looking like I'm balancing tumbleweed on my head.

NotMyCat · 29/10/2021 12:05

@Pheasantlysurprised so I wash and condition and brush the conditioner through before rinsing
Then I use gel generally and rake that through, then brush it again (all upside down) and scrunch and scrunch! Diffuse until crunchy then scrunch out any crunchy bits

haba · 29/10/2021 14:13

I think my hair is exactly like @VanillaAndOrange 's hair! DD's is the same. Those perfect little curls at the side of the face after rain Smile but mostly just sort of wavyish. I try to blow dry straight, because if I leave it, I look like the witch from Simon and The Witch!
I have some salt spray to try, so might have a go with that...

DampSquidGames · 29/10/2021 16:52

I curl mine with curlers from Amazon (long hair take 7 minutes) then turn my hair upside down, hairspray it, then go through it a bit with fingertips. It’s stays lovely and curly all day and I don’t have to brush it or do anything to it .

Thank you! Gel sounds interesting. I havent used it for many years. Serums are terrible on my hair, no matter how much the claim not to, they always make my hair too greasy and it doesn't even put a dent in the fuzz!

My hair is unpredictable, so one week it is more curly, then the next flat half way down and wavy. It cant make it's mind up.
I lived further north for a few years and it was always softer and shinier after washing (barely any fuzz), but since I moved a bit further south (still northern) it turns to fuzz every wash - I really do think water quality affects it a lot.
I have used a Britta filter jug on it but not much use sadly, I would possibly need some fancy converter shower installed.

I'm not sure I'm getting the gist of this @ShrikeAttack , do you think you could post another 7 photos of yourself from different angles, just so we can be sure? Cheers!

What does ‘7 minutes’ actually mean, in reality?

7 minutes to put the curlers in? OK.

So you wash it? How long does that take? Then you put the curlers in.

How long does it take to dry? Minutes? Hours? All day? Do you use a hair dryer?

Is this something you do daily?

Do you work, and need to be out of the house by a certain time?

I can’t believe ‘7 minutes’ is anything other than the tip of the iceberg. I would so love to be wrong! 🤞

LoveGrooveDanceParty I use my curlers the day I don’t wash my hair, they take 7 minutes to use from start to finish. That’s not the tip of the iceberg it’s the whole iceberg.

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 31/10/2021 07:59

Really??

So you put them in in dry hair - and then immediately take them out. And you have curly hair for the rest of the day?

Want sort of witchcraft is this??

My hair is just as Pheasantly describes - unpredictable!
This is my hair on a good day; if I could get it to behave like this every time I’d be happy. But I can’t so I normally straighten it. I’m fighting against its natural state though.

highlandcoo · 31/10/2021 08:35

My hair straightened - not so nice really and takes hours to do. Although it dues then stay like that for a few days.
Inspired by this thread I might try just leaving it to its own devices next time. But I’m not hopeful ..

That's really nice of you to say DampSquid, thank you Smile

These were two occasions when I felt really pleased at having achieved a style I was happy with, hence the photos! It often doesn't turn out quite like that to be honest.

I do feel lucky having thick hair. Both of the above styles take ages though; the first one to dry naturally which isn't really practical in cold weather, and the second involves pinning it up, drying in sections and straightening afterwards. Takes a good hour and a half, as well as washing time.

It would be amazing to have hair that just fell into a lovely style with little time and effort .. I guess that's what we all want isn't it.

I’ve got one of these and it just doesn’t work on my hair. You’ve reminded me, I really should sell it
