Anyone else want bigger, wavier hair?

Im growing more and more towards this in recent years.
Im fluffy and wavy myself, and have spent the past 15 years ironing it into a tired, flat disaster. If I slap a bit of leave in conditioner on it and dry it in a twist, or else just allow it flow, it looks healthier and thicker and just....more alive.
It really doesn't have to conform to anything it isn't. And I don't have to spend a fortune 'correcting' something that should not be considered wrong.

I was also looking at some older style pics on Pinterest and loved the wanton haphazardness of Helena Bonham carter's hair, Kate bush, etc.

Im not suggesting the 80's bon Jovi here, im talking about a more relaxed, natural, substantial kind of liberation from the super glossy, almost cardboard cut out styles we have been used to seeing for so long now, where women in the media are all straightened and glossed, afraid to move in case a stray strand breaks free.
Natural straight hair is gorgeous, but it has dominated the demands on women for too long, I think. The desperation to fight any fluffiness or frizz is kind of sad really.

Anyone else growing to prefer a little more wildness and naturalness to their hairstyles? This can look both contemporary and well groomed, but I believe we have been hoodwinked into perceiving it as crazy or untidy.
It didnt seem to bother anyone prior to the GHD craze - a very long running obsessive trend for very repressed, neat hair that had to reflect light like gloss paint and barely move.

And it isn't 'either-or' either: we can absolutely have natural, bigger hair without being untidy. I can't even relate to having to become a 'curly girl', which always strikes me as infantile and yet another way to beat oneself into submission - many curls and waves are not uniform and such strict methods are no cheerier than the GHD obsession to my mind.

Seen a lot of younger women and girls with long, fluffy hair, going with their natural texture out and about for a few years now. It's one thing as a middle aged woman I am happy to see!

How do you twist & dry @ShrikeAttack ?
In sections? :)

Blondiney · 23/10/2021 12:49

I've been straightening my hair since about 1990, could cry when I think of all the hours I wasted trying to iron out my natural texture.

At 47 I find that the long, straight hair now makes me look haggard as fuck. My natural big, fluffy mess is now the preferable option.

Snugglemuffin · 23/10/2021 13:20

Oh yes, I love bigger hair! I don't have a particularly big head, so I like my hair to be big to compensate. I haven't straightened my hair in years now I think about it and I used to do it daily (hair like op's - fluffy and wavy naturally)

WavyHair · 23/10/2021 16:02

I don't have particularly big hair but have embraced the wave now. So much easier because I can just let it dry naturally, with a bit of serum and some scrunching like PPs

everyone's hair is just so much lovelier with natural texture, it all looks so healthy, thanks for sharing!

I recall positing a pic of my natural texture on here a few years ago and asked people what they'd do with it (I was having a bit of a low with it) and everyone told me to get keratin or Japanese straightening, new GHD's or a babyliss big hair. That device made me look like I'd had an electric shock Grin

Your hair is lovely @WavyHair - do you use any conditioning treatments?

oviraptor21 · 23/10/2021 21:05

I've always disliked the straightened hair look - probably because my hair was straight when younger and I coveted curls.
Fast forward a good few years and my hair now has a lovely wave to it. I wouldn't mind slightly better condition at the ends but overall I'm much happier with it now.
Agree with pp - @WavyHair's hair is lovely

dudsville · 23/10/2021 21:06

I thought the far too long trend to straighten hair was so dull and it didn't suit everyone! I look odd with flat hair so the first attempt was the last. My hair is meant to stand up by a good 4 or 5 cm!

WavyHair · 23/10/2021 22:23

No. I wash and condition every other day though, I just can't get it to stretch longer between washes without my roots getting lank and greasy. I just use tresemme cleansing shampoo and then usually whichever tresemme conditioner I've managed to get hold of as the cleansing one isn't always available. I just put a little through the lengths though, I don't leave it on.
I use the same product mentioned earlier, aussi work that curl serum, when it's wet after washing. Then on non washing days I wet the lengths and scrunch the serum through.
I don't know if I have slightly weird hair that's both easily greasy and a little frizzy too. Combination like my skin haha. I haven't let it grow and be wavy for very long though so probably lots of room to improve my hair care

ShrikeAttack · 26/10/2021 02:01

I literally twist it into a bun, secure with a silk scrunchie and let it dry @withlotsoflove! I Opalex it once a week, dry it like that and it falls in lovely big chunky waves.

RadioSixMusicLover · 26/10/2021 02:17

I’m doing this. I’ve been teaching myself a Chelsea blow dry from YouTube. I’ve been through curly girl, straightened, now I want some movement and just embrace my hair.

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 26/10/2021 04:25

The Chelsea blow dry appears to be creating ‘fake’ curls based on blow drying and using rollers.

Rather than embracing / working with existing curls. Unless I’m missing something.

3luckystars · 26/10/2021 05:08

I have big curly hair and only in the last few months have I felt able to wear it down again. (It has been tied up for many years) I felt that straight was so ‘in’ that curls looked wild and untidy, so it was nearly frowned upon to have mad hair if that makes sense?

There is definitely a change in the air!

You can get your nice texture back if you stop straightening it now. If you just use conditioner and not shampoo that might help too. Good luck.

I don’t use rollers. Just a round brush.
Wotsitsits · 26/10/2021 08:26

Cut hair in layers. Dry naturally. Most people's hair has a natural wave to it.

Wotsitsits · 26/10/2021 08:29

NB. The shag is now called the wolf cut thanks to tiktok..! I've been cutting my own hair this way for 2 years now and had tons of compliments.

withlotsoflove · 26/10/2021 11:06

Thank u!
I’ll do this tonight!

I would love bigger wavier more volumous hair.
Mine is fine and flat and I think it would be so much more flattering as a frame to the face if it wasn't so sleek.

ShrikeAttack · 28/10/2021 22:42

It's ok @FindingMeno.

FreeBritnee · 29/10/2021 10:20

There are some of us who have never conformed to hair fashion. My hair has always been a frizzy mass. Long may it continue.

Getyourarseofffthequattro · 29/10/2021 10:26

@antsinyourpanta

I have thick wavy/bushy hair that is neither straight or curly. Even if I straighten it, it sort of rebels and does its own thing after about 15 minutes a while. Mostly I tie it back because I have to for work and most of the time I can't be bothered to straighten it for it to bounce back in no time. But I'm Inspired by *@DareDevil223* to try my diffuser again!Smile Often if I leave naturally one side gets a few nice ringlets or curls and the other side looks just bushy with no defined waves or curls!
Mine is like this! It's thick but the individual hairs are fine apparently. It used to be curly when I was small but now it's kind of not that wavy but not straight. It's heavy so if I curl it they drop out immediately. I had my hair done for a wedding and the hair dresser was like I'll use the big ghds because your hair is long I was like don't bother you won't even get a curl in. She ignored me and tried anyway and I was like oh yeah it's done nothing. If I straighten it it doesn't stay straight for long at all.

I might try mousse and a diffuser see if I can bring some more waves out.
