I'm looking for a casual dress that I can just throw on and wear. Something still a bit trendy, but will also go with everything and that I can run around and do errands in.

I'm a dress addict, and have over 75 of them, but looking at them all recently the main thing that has stood out about my autumn/winter dresses is that they're all a bit formal for everyday now. I'm no longer going into the office and if I do things are much more casual now. Normally I would wear a nice dress with heels - either court shoes, knee high heeled boots, or heeled sandals. But now if I wear things like this it looks like I'm going out to dinner or about to have an interview / do a presentation.

I'm struggling to find any dress at the moment that suits my pale summer skin tone, that doesn't swamp my 5'4 size 8 hourglass frame, and that doesn't look too dressy or put together. I came across this Me+Em dress after scouring websites for weeks. I like the look of it on the model. It's casual, not too busy with bold patterns, not too bright, not too flowy, nips on at the waist, has a zipper to create a V-neck. It's casual. But I'm not sure if it's too casual. I'm also wondering if it might swamp me as well? I'd wear it with flat Dr Martin style boots and tights or white trainers.

Thoughts? Or alternative suggestions?? I don't wear bright bold colours, no reds, oranges, bright blues or greens. I suit softer muted colours, like greys, pastels, cool mink browns, softer blues and greens. So in a sea of puffy black dresses it's been challenging this year.

It's lovely!

Whohashiddenthebiscuits · 18/10/2021 13:49

It looks comfortable and warm but quite honestly I don’t particularly have any strong feelings about it. I assume given the brand it’s not cheap either. I get it’s something easy to wear around the house but even so, its a bit nothing.

Sorry, that’s a bit harsh! If you like it, go for it.

notacooldad · 18/10/2021 13:52

I like it.
I'm in the same dilemma as you at the moment. None of my dresses (except one winter one from Dorothy Perkins 8 years ago ) are inspiring me at the moment.
I'm hoping people post other suggestions!

Daisydoesnt · 18/10/2021 13:54

I'm a HUGE fan of Me+Em but actually to me that dress is a bit . There was a great thread on here the other day recommending 50something influencers and one of them was wearing this dress from Boden which - for me - is much nicer.

Boden

Daisydoesnt · 18/10/2021 13:55

NB that Boden dress comes in other colours OP, but I think the best photo is the dark pink.

Bagelsandbrie · 18/10/2021 13:57

I’m not sure. I think if you imagine it with a zip all the way down it’s not far off an M and S velour dressing gown Grin

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 18/10/2021 14:11

How tall is the model? I do think that might swamp someone who is 5'4 to be honest. I'm 5'6 and I'd assume it would reach the floor on me!

This made me laugh lol. I've never even worn a dressing gown before 😂

It is an expensive dress given what it is yes. But I feel like I'm prepared to spend £100-£200 on something I will get w lot of wear out of. Previously I'd spend £300 and the only times id get to wear it is if I went out to dinner with friends.

I'm not too crazy about the Boden dress that's been linked - while it's a lovely dress, I think the fabric is too heavy for my frame. Plus I'm 'only' 40, so the fact this was associated with 50+ influencers makes me slightly worried lol.

I'd normally consider myself quite fashionable wearing brands like Ba&sh, Stine Goya, Lolly's Laundry as well as the standard Zara, H&M, etc but this season has got me stuck! I feel like the trends have gone away from dresses this season and has focused more on the new styles of jeans and knitwear.

This is my second choice dress. Tbh I think I prefer it to the Me+Em one, but I'd prefer something without south a high neckline. I'll probably go for this one in a petite, as it feels the most 'throw on and go' for me. The Me+Em dress is very different than what I'd normally wear. I was trying to push myself out of my comfort zone with it

I love ME+EM - been wearing them for a long time. In my experience, their clothes wear well and last for years. Not everything they make suits me, but they take returns so if you don't live it on, you can return it. Probably about 80% of my comfy-but-still-presentable clothes are from ME+EM and I'm very happy with them!

FindingMeno · 18/10/2021 14:28

I like it very much.
(I would live in my zip all the way down m&s dressing gown if I got the chance though)
The point is that you want something wearable and this looks simple and comfortable but could be worn with accessories to easily up the look.

FindingMeno · 18/10/2021 14:29

And it has pockets.

Floisme · 18/10/2021 15:05

In view of your anxieties, I feel obliged to warn you I'm a 60+ poster.

I hardly ever wear dresses these days but I like that one - it feels really refreshing after all the flowers and flounces of the last few years.
Me and Em is expensive but in my (albeit limited) experience, the clothes wear well, and I think they're particularly good at reading trends and finding that modern/wear anywhere/good quality sweet spot. It may well be long on you though at 5'4 - their trousers are the same.

Floisme · 18/10/2021 15:46

Forgot to say, I'm not so keen on the second dress you posted because, as I've said, I've seen enough florals and flounces lately to last me the rest of my life.

Claudethecat · 18/10/2021 18:09

I have been musing over this one, also available in khaki.

Zara have a very similar one to the Hush one for £20! @Claudethecat

Following because I am also in a dress rut.

I love those on other people, as well as those nice turtleneck sweaters dresses, but I've got a c-section pooch and quite bad love handles, so afraid they'd look terrible on me. It's lovely though!

I actually really like this one. I would need to belt it, otherwise it would just look like sack on me and I'd be boobs and no waist. But this is a pretty similar style to why I'd wear last summer. Although saying that now I wonder if this style is outdated in general??

I'm very fair with delicate features, so ditsy florals and smaller patterns really suit me.

Just a warning-the Boden dress you linked to is enormous. I’m 5’7”, size 8 hourglass and it drowned me.

I have a couple of Me~ Em dresses and the quality is way better than Boden so worth the additional ££

BessMarvin · 18/10/2021 19:59

Have you looked at thisisunfolded.com/ ? I really don't know if that's what you're after but they have several dresses and your last one made me think of them.

Verite1 · 18/10/2021 23:18

I love M and Em but not keen on the dress I’m afraid. I just don’t like the velour. I’m sure they had a similar casual dress but not in velour. Will have a look

Verite1 · 18/10/2021 23:20

This is similar shape (although not quite so fitted) but in ponte instead of velour

Verite1 · 18/10/2021 23:24

I have this and it is soooo comfy. You can wear it in summer with sandals or trainers or layer it in autumn and wear with tights and boots.

Actually this is same as dress you liked but just not velour. Scrap the first option I suggested - this one is better.
