Waterproof trench coat

I bought a trench coat from Marks and Spencers. It was not expensive but looked nice. Unfortunately I wore it in a heavy downpour and discovered that it was not waterproof.

I need a new one. How can I guarantee that the next one will be waterproof? Maybe I need to spend a bit more money and go to a better shop but then again are the more expensive ones a rip off? Burberry ones ccost up to £1000 which I think is too much to pay but then again a Burberry trench coat of that price will last a lifetime

Maybe the thing to do is go to a charity shop where you will get a Burberry trench coat or trenh coat of similar quality at a knocdown price or look on ebay?

The main concern for me is that it has to be waterproof.

This video is completely false. He shows water being thrown over the coat to test it is waterrproof. But in a very heaving downpour I doubt it would be waterproof. It is also over 1k. who would pay that much money for a trench coat?

Could you try a Waterproofing Spray on the trench coat... would that work 🌸

Ok, not a trench coat, per se, but fabulous, waterproof coats. I know someone who has one and I am currently lusting after one for rainy days.

Nothing seems to be waterproof theses days, what’s going on ?

A coat like that is only to be water resistant or showerproof as they are usually cotton with a protective coating.
You need either something like a Rains DK or Stutterheim PVC-ish coat, or a proper water-resistant hiking/outdoors type thing

Thanks. I will look for a better trench coat. I realise it will not be waterproof but I will use it with a large umbrella. I do love the look of trench coats. Nice and stylish but totally impractical in a thunderstorm unless of course you have a very larga umbrella that covers you

I don't know if four seasons are still a company but they make barbour style coats without the price tag.

Being actually waterproof is alright but I find it makes me sweat so my arms are soaking from the material!!!

Petit bateau have a hooded trench which is water proof and cotton lined... but quite light weight for winter. The navy is sold out but it now also comes in a lighter 'trench' colour. Sorry I cant link!

I've got this from Protected Species It's effective and I also don't mind wearing it when it's not raining. They used to do regular special offers with Mumsnet but I don't know if that's still the case.

I've seen Rains recommended on here too although I've never bought.

update

I foound a lovely vintage trench coat in a charity shop. Ten times better quality than my new one. Only trouble is, the charity shop one has shoulder pads like what people wore in the 1980s but I dont care as it suits me and I dont feel silly in it Not sure how much it would be new but I am guessing about £200. The make is Aquaberry which no longer exists but that doesnt matter to me
