Smart, warm winter jacket

I'm looking for a smart, but warm winter jacket, not a long coat, to wear for evenings out. I have a lovely long winter coat, but it takes up a lot of room on my knee when at the theatre.

I like shopping in real shops, and need to try everything on as I have long arms. I am a jewel winter and autumn colours don't suit me at all.

Sorry for dodgy link. It's the peak pitch boiled wool jacket from Seasalt in blue.

White Stuff also have some 'low profile' velvet coats that might work.

That's a bit more casual than I had in mind, but thank you anyway.
