Help me find a top to wear with these trousers?

I'm sorry I don't know how to do better links.

I have these, I love them so much and they are perfect for winter, but I can't work out what to wear with them and I've identified two main problems.

  1. If I do a tucked in button up top I look formal and blousy in an 80's way, but given the volume of material I do need to bring the waist in.

  2. The colour of my tops don't work so I think I have to get something new. I do have one white top but it's a summer top and these trousers are for cooler weather. This isn't a usual colour for me so I don't know what to look for to go with it.

Can anyone guide me?

Are these the ones?

Nice trousers! Slim fit polo of crew neck merino knits that sit on the waistband of the trousers would be good,

Colour-wise, cream would be better than white, otherwise navy or grey if you want a toned-down palette.

Quite oversized knits can also work if you do a little French tuck at the front so that you get a glimpse of waist.

Maybe have a play around with some of the shapes in your wardrobe, find a silhouette you like then get something in the right colour.

One last word of advice, if you buy something that doesn't work with anything else in your wardrobe, it might not be the right thing for you

I do wear silk shirts with slouchy woolen trousers too, it gives a nice Katherine Hepburn vibe.

I'd love that with just a white linen mix t-shirt tucked in, or a navy merino jumper french tucked. Or a sweater vest and blouse. Gorgeous trousers - they wouldn't work on me but I love them.

Great ideas here thanks! I like the idea of focusing on getting the shape right and then looking for the right colour, the colour is the hardest part for me with these.

Blue and grey are a part of my wardrobe, but the shades I already have really aren't right. This is more of a dark chambray colour, and the fabric is a mix of dark blue, light blue and white threads.

And thanks shrikeattack, I didn't think these were outside of my usual pallet.

Maybe I could embrace that Hepburn look, but with a top that has red in it... off to try that when I get home, along with the French tuck!

It must be something to do withthe tone of the blue or grey????

I assume no one will be interested but I found the solution! I was watching You've Got Mail and in it Meg Ryan wore a skirt the colour of my trousers with a camel cardigan and white tee! Gap had these on sale so for about £30 for the merino cardigan and tee I am sorted!

Nothing useful to add, sounds like you are sorted. Just came on to say, lovely trousers!
