Benefit - They're Real magnetic mascara

I've used Benefit They're Real mascara for years. I love it - it never ever smudges on me and it come off really easily with the garnier micellar water with the pink cap.

Needed to replace, so I thought I'd go for They're Real Magnetic. Such a mistake! By 11am I had big smudges under my eyes. So disappointed, as it was a real waste of £20. And now I'm reluctant to give Benefit another 320 for the proper They're Real mascara, even though I know it is what I want (please don't challenge the logic there, I know it doesn't follow!).

Can anyone recommend a non-smudge mascara please, tubing ideally, and also dark brown if possible?

Maybelline. I don’t waste money elsewhere now.

SparklingLime · 11/10/2021 13:42

Return it and explain what happened. They will likely swap it for your usual.

Batfinkwings · 11/10/2021 13:43

I have done the EXACT same thing @WellTidy
Luckily I only bought the small size as I was on holiday and had forgotten my mascara.

It’s probably not helpful as I think it’s pricey, but I recently had a sample of Charlotte Tilbury Legendary Lashes 2 and I was impressed with that.

Shmithecat2 · 11/10/2021 13:46

I've just bought the Magnetic one and it's not smudged, so I'm surprised! Have you tried Boots No.7 Stay Perfect? It's tubing, and comes in Black/Brown. I'm not a huge fan of it, but I know I'm in the minority. The best tubing mascara I've found and keep going back to is the L'Oréal Double Extension Beauty Tubes mascara, but it only comes in black.

rbe78 · 11/10/2021 13:56

It's cheap and cheerdul, but my fave tubing mascara is Rimmel Scandeleyes Reloaded (the one in an orange tube). It comes in black and brown-black, and doesn't budge until wiped with warm water.

I hadn't thought of returning it - I bought it from Benefit's own website, so I've contacted them and asked if they would consider swapping it for the normal They're Real. I don't hold out much hope, but its worth a go! I can't use it as the smudging is so bad, so nothing to lose.

Glad to know its not just me though! Trading on the reputation of They're Real, I think, but I know that some people really don't rate They're Real either.

Thanks for the other recommendations.

If it’s still within 14 days of your online order then you can return it no questions asked (see www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/regulation/consumer-contracts-regulations-ajWHC8m21cAk).

But either way it’s in Benefit’s interest to keep you as a customer.

Ooooooh. This is day 13. I had Covid, so I wasn't wearing mascara for most of that time. Come to work with it on and I had panda eyes by mid morning. This never used to happen with They're Real.

I've emailed Benefit and I will see what they say.

I also really rate their pore-fessional primers and most of their blushers, so I'm not dissing Benefit products,. I remember when they brought out High Beam and Moon Beam, I'm that long a customer!

I've never really rated They're Real, it's a bit like Better Than Sex - Too Faced on me. I liked BadGal Lash much more. I recently bought a cheap W7 mascara on a whim and I actually love it! It makes my lashes look better than every expensive mascara I've ever had.

My link doesn’t work, here’s a better explanation:

I had the exact same thing! Big smudges under the eyes.

I’m currently using Aldi’s copycat version of they’re real, it’s called “Too Legit” Grin it’s pretty smudge proof!

Otherwise my usual go to (I bought the magnetic benefit one in the travel size because I was curious, like the normal They’re Real but can’t justify the £££ regularly) is rimmel day to night.

CorrBlimeyGG · 11/10/2021 18:38

I expect Benefit will offer to exchange it, they're pretty good at customer service.

The information by SparklingLime is misleading. While you do have the right to cancel the contract within fourteen days, the retailer has the right to make a deduction where you have used the product. A used mascara cannot be resold, so that deduction could lawfully be 100%.

Stick to the facts, the mascara is not fit for purpose.

CorrBlimeyGG · 11/10/2021 18:39

(I also like Aldi's dupe, not sure if they have it in stock at the moment, it's often available in November as I stick one in my Christmas things.)

Yes, I’ve muddled uptake 14 days and 30 days if faulty provisions. Sorry, OP, but it is all explained in the link.

I’ve recently said this on another thread- but my new dark brown holy grail mascara is eyeko cocoa edit. Wonderous. Toddler swimming lesson proof- including dunking!!

WellTidy · 11/10/2021 19:21

@Mummyingetc thanks - how do you remove the eyeko?

That doesn't apply to a used mascara!!!
Mummyingetc · 11/10/2021 20:52

I double cleanse and it comes off perfectly with that

parentinghelp1 · 11/10/2021 20:55

I switched from they're real to Lancôme hypnose drama - it's amazing hands down best mascara ever would never change.

It's pricey though - about £25

Tarrarra · 11/10/2021 20:59

Mabelline False lash effect. I switched from they’re real and it’s at least half the price and twice as good!

WellTidy · 12/10/2021 12:21

Update - Benefit have said they’ll accept the return and will replace it with the normal They’re Real mascara. Delighted. Thanks for the advice - never thought of trying to return it!!
